Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren believes several members of Ghana’s Black Princesses squad could graduate to the senior national team after their impressive 3-1 victory over South Korea at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The Black Princesses produced a spirited response to their opening 3-0 defeat by Ecuador, delivering a dominant performance against the Koreans to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
After controlling much of the contest, Ghana broke the deadlock through Sarah Nyarko before Ivy Owusu Ansah doubled the lead with a stunning long-range effort. Ruth Amponsah added a third goal late on, while South Korea grabbed a consolation strike before full-time.
The result moved Ghana into second place in Group C and drew praise from Björkegren, who was impressed by the character shown by the young side after a difficult start to the tournament.
“There are many really good players here. I’m happy that they bounced back today,” the Swedish coach said in an interview with 3Sports.
“They had a rough first game, but today they performed so well and were completely dominant.”
Björkegren also suggested that several players from the current squad could soon challenge for places in the Black Queens setup as Ghana continue to build towards future international competitions.
“We will see. There are three, four, maybe a potential five players that will be there [in the Black Queens setup] sooner or later at least,” he added.
The victory has left the Black Princesses in a strong position heading into their final group match against France.
Charles Sampson’s side know that avoiding defeat against the French will be enough to secure qualification for the next round of the competition.
