The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has projected a sharp decline in tomato prices in the coming weeks as farmers begin harvesting their crops.
According to him, the expected increase in supply from the ongoing harvest will help ease pressure on consumers and bring some relief to households currently facing high tomato prices.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 7, 2026, Mr Dumelo said the government was also preparing for large-scale dry-season tomato farming between December 2026 and June 2027 to prevent potential supply shortages.
“The prices of tomatoes should see a sharp decline in the coming weeks as Ghanaian farmers have started harvesting,” he said.
He explained that the government was paying particular attention to northern Ghana, where preparations for the next dry-season farming cycle are already underway.
“We are also actively preparing for large-scale dry-season tomato farming from December to June next year,” he said.
Mr Dumelo disclosed that lands had already been cleared in parts of northern Ghana ahead of the next phase of production.
He said nursing and transplanting of tomato seedlings are expected to begin in October as part of efforts to prepare farmers for the dry-season cultivation.
The Deputy Minister further stated that the government had provided solar-powered boreholes and irrigation equipment to support farmers and sustain production during the dry season.
“We have provided solar-powered boreholes as well as irrigation inputs to farmers to actively pursue dry-season tomato farming to augment the shortfalls next year,” he said.
The measures, he explained, form part of broader efforts to increase domestic tomato production and minimise the supply gaps that typically occur during periods of lower production.
The government expects the expansion of dry-season tomato farming to improve the consistency of supply and help reduce seasonal fluctuations in tomato prices.
