Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler says the club will strengthen its squad with experienced foreign-based players as it prepares for the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season.

The South African coach, who was appointed after Kotoko’s disappointing campaign last season, said extensive scouting had been carried out in recent weeks to identify players capable of helping the club challenge for honours.

His comments came after Kotoko’s 1-0 victory over Heart of Lions on Tuesday at the University of Ghana Stadium, a pre-season friendly forming part of the team’s preparations for the new campaign.

“We needed to do a lot of scouting over the past three, four weeks; you know, it’s been pretty tough for Stanley and myself because we haven’t had much sleep,” Tinkler told Asante Kotoko media.

He said the club had reviewed footage of numerous players locally and internationally as part of efforts to strengthen the squad.

“Looking at so many videos of players both locally and obviously internationally and looking to strengthen the team, and when that happens, obviously it does take a knock-on effect in terms of creating that solid foundation that I was speaking about when it comes to the physical necessity of the game,” he added.

Kotoko have already released several players ahead of the new season, and Tinkler believes the incoming recruits will bring valuable experience to the squad.

“So a lot of new faces, a lot of foreign-based players, they come with a lot of experience as well, which I think is very important,” he said.

The coach also hinted that supporters could expect some unexpected additions before the transfer window closes.

“There is one or two surprises that are coming in terms of our signings, and I think you are going to see a team that is going to fight to compete,” he added.

Kotoko will continue their pre-season preparations against rivals Hearts of Oak in the 2026 Democracy Cup before beginning their league campaign away to newly promoted Debibi United.
