Three people have been confirmed dead in the Adentan Municipality in the Greater Accra Region following a heavy downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ella Esiman Nongo, disclosed the fatalities in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
According to her, the deaths occurred in Lakeside-Nanakrom and New Legon.
“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom, and a gentleman around New Legon,” she stated.
Madam Nongo added that emergency response teams managed to rescue some residents in Ashiyie, but others remained at high risk due to poor drainage systems and haphazard settlements.
“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she said.
She emphasised the urgent need for enforcement of building regulations and structural interventions to address the root causes of the perennial flooding.
“If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enforce the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring,” she warned.
The flooding submerged major roads and cut off access to several communities, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, and adjoining towns.
