A Tema-bound passenger train has derailed after striking two stray cattle on the rail corridor near Avenor in Accra, bringing services on the line to a halt.
The accident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, shortly after the train departed Avenor Station en route to Odaw Station.
The two cattle had wandered onto the railway line and were struck by the moving train, causing the carriages to derail.
Train services were subsequently suspended and passengers on board were asked to disembark, leaving commuters stranded and unable to continue their journeys.
The incident has raised concerns over the presence of stray animals and encroachments along sections of the Accra–Tema railway corridor, which continue to pose operational and safety risks to rail services.
Rail authorities are expected to undertake a full investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident.
Normal service on the line is yet to be fully restored.
