Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Communications Director Charles Osei Asibey has admitted that Team Ghana failed to meet its medal target at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after returning with only two medals.
Ghana fielded a 40-member contingent across nine sporting disciplines but ended the competition with a silver and a bronze medal, falling short of expectations set before the Games.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Osei Asibey said the GOC had targeted at least five medals, including a gold medal from the boxing team.
“Our target was to win at least five medals. We were expecting at least one gold from boxing,” he said.
Although the overall medal tally fell below expectations, Team Ghana recorded some notable individual performances during the competition.
Paralympian Zinabu Issah won Ghana’s only silver medal after recording a season-best throw of 8.6 metres in the women’s F57 shot put event.
In boxing, Amadu Mohammed secured the country’s second medal by winning bronze in the men’s 55kg division after reaching the semi-finals.
The two-medal haul means Team Ghana finished three medals short of its pre-tournament target.
The Ghana Olympic Committee is expected to review the team’s performance and identify areas requiring improvement as preparations begin for future international competitions.
