The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in collaboration with the Klottey Korley Assembly and the Osu Traditional Council, has officially commissioned the first phase of the Accra Leisure and Recreational Park, popularly known as Geese Park.

The park boasts modern facilities, including a snack shop, restaurant, event center, children’s playground, zoo, and a skating park.

It will also be connected to the Asomdwoe Park in Osu, forming part of the growing network of tourist attractions in the Osu area.

The commissioning ceremony saw attendance from key tourism stakeholders, including former Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Andrew Egyapa Mercer; Seth Adjei Baah; Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman; Koku Anyidoho; and other board members and staff of the GTA.

In his address, former Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer described the park’s commissioning as a landmark achievement for Ghana.

He highlighted the pivotal role the GTA has played in advancing the country’s tourism sector over the past eight years under the leadership of Akwasi Agyeman.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman outlined the GTA’s vision of leveraging tourism to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and narrate its history.

He noted that the Geese Park is part of a series of redevelopment initiatives, including the Kwame Nkrumah Museum and the Nationalism Park, undertaken through partnerships with the Ministry of Tourism and other agencies.

The Geese Park’s commissioning marks a significant milestone in Accra’s transformation into a vibrant hub for leisure and recreation, further enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.

The launch event, which was attended by the Deputy CEO of the GTA, Ekow Sampson, and traditional leaders from the Kwawu traditional council, marked the beginning of preparations for the highly anticipated festival.

In an interview with Adom News, Ekow Sampson said the paragliding festival is scheduled to take place from March 29 to April 1st, 2024.

He emphasized the uniqueness of the Kwawu paragliding site, noting that only three countries in Africa boast such picturesque tourist attractions.

Mr. Sampson urged everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to experience the festival firsthand.

Addressing some of the challenges associated with the festival, Isaac Agyapong, the District Chief Executive for Kwawu East, raised concerns about the high cost of accommodation during the Kwawu Easter celebrations.

He called on the GTA to engage with hotel owners to consider reducing prices, thus making the festival more accessible to visitors.

Additionally, Agyapong mentioned ongoing road construction works from Mpraeso to Abetifi, a key route for festival attendees.

He noted that, although the contractor had abandoned the project, the Assembly would ensure the road remains motorable for visitors during the Kwawu Easter celebrations.

The launch of the Kwahu Paragliding Festival signals the beginning of a vibrant and exciting Easter celebration in the Eastern Region, drawing tourists and adventure enthusiasts from across the country and beyond.

According to the GTA, the reopening follows President Nana Akufo-Addo’s nation address on Sunday.

In a statement, it explained restaurants, hotels, drinking bars and all other food chain suppliers can resume work except for night clubs.

It added the facilities can have sit-ins and delivery services while ensuring they abide by the precautionary measures.

It urged management to ensure all staff and other workplace protocols are in place to guarantee the safety of workers and patrons.
