Woods told a sheriff’s deputy he was looking down at his cell phone and changing the radio station and did not notice the vehicle in front of him had slowed down, the affidavit said.

Two white pills identified as hydrocodone were found in Woods’ left pants pocket during a search after his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, the affidavit said. Woods told deputies he had consumed no alcohol but said he takes “a few” prescription medications and had taken them earlier that morning.

Hydrocodone is a prescription opioid used to treat severe, chronic pain.

The crash marks the latest setback for Woods as the 50-year-old was attempting another comeback after years of injuries and car accidents.

The golf legend was driving a Land Rover when he clipped a pickup truck pulling a small trailer, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said last week. The crash caused Woods’ SUV to roll onto its side.

“Our DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify the signs of impairment,” Budensiek said. The 82-time PGA Tour winner was charged with driving under the influence, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test – all misdemeanors.

Woods was sweating profusely and had bloodshot, glassy eyes and extremely dilated pupils, a Martin County sheriff’s deputy wrote in the affidavit. His movement was lethargic and slow, the deputy added.

Due to Woods’ physical limitations — he told deputies he has had seven back surgeries and more than 20 operations on his leg — the tests were conducted while he was seated. Woods made multiple errors, such as starting exercises before being instructed to do so; not counting steps correctly; and not returning his hand to his side as directed, according to the affidavit.

The deputy “believed that Woods’ normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle,” she wrote in the affidavit. Woods was arrested at approximately 3:12 p.m.

A breath test administered at the Martin County Jail registered 0.000 on both samples, indicating no alcohol was present, according to the affidavit. Woods refused to submit to a urine test to determine the presence of chemical or controlled substances.

Woods was not injured in the crash and was seen leaving the Martin County Jail late Friday, CNN affiliate WPBF reported.

The circumstances of his arrest bore similarities to his 2017 arrest, after which prescription drugs were found in his system, including hydrocodone.

Whether Woods returns to next month’s Masters Tournament remains in question after the latest in a series of auto incidents dating back to 2009, when he was cited for careless driving.

The 15-time major winner pleaded guilty to reckless driving in 2017 after he was arrested that May on suspicion of DUI. His 12-month probation was contingent on completing recommended treatment, including DUI school, 50 hours of community service and random drug and alcohol testing.

In 2021, Woods was hospitalized after a serious rollover crash in Los Angeles County that investigators ruled was an accident.

Since then, he has played in 11 tournaments but finished only four. Asked last week about a return to competitive golf, Woods said he was “trying,” but his “body doesn’t recover like when I was 24/25.”

“I’ve had a couple bad injuries here in the past year,” Woods told reporters after a TGL match. “I’ve had to fight through, it’s taken some time. But I keep trying. I want to play.”

Tiger Woods and Nike are splitting up after 27 years https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-and-nike-are-splitting-up-after-27-years/ Tue, 09 Jan 2024 11:34:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2339630 Tiger Woods has broken up with Nike after a protracted 27-year collaboration with the world’s largest sportwear company, the golf legend announced on Monday.

“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods wrote on X.

Woods went on to write that “there will certainly be another chapter.”

Nike bid adieu to Woods on Instagram, saying “it was a hell of a round, Tiger.”

“Tiger, you challenged your competition, stereotypes, conventions, the old school way of thinking. You challenged the entire institution of golf. You challenged us. And most of all, yourself. And for that challenge we’re grateful,” the company added.

Popular Swiss sneaker brand ON Running’s CEO Marc Maurer, addressing speculation following Woods departure at Nike, told an audience at the ICR retailing Conference on Monday that Woods was not signing with the brand.

“We hope he finds a great new partner. It’s not going to be us,” Maurer told the gathering.

Nike has almost been synonymous with Woods, from when he first went pro in 1996 to his Masters win in 2019, his first major tournament win in 11 years. Even though a sex scandal drove sponsors such as Gatorade, AT&T and Accenture away from Woods – losing him an estimated $20 million – his relationship with Nike stayed intact.

In 1996, Nike launched the iconic “Hello World” commercial, based on Woods’ professional debut at the Greater Milwaukee Open, where he began the press conference with, “I guess, hello world, huh?”

Woods signed a five-year endorsement contract with Nike in 2000. It was worth an estimated $85 million, making it the richest endorsement contract in sports history at the time.

At one point, Woods’ Nike deal was reported to be worth as much as $20 million a year, CNN previously reported. Woods signed multiple deals with the company over a span of nearly three decades, including a 10-year deal signed in 2013 that’s worth about $200 million. But in 2019, his deal was worth about half of that amount annually, Bob Dorfman, an endorsement expert and executive creative director at Baker Street Advertising, said at the time.

Woods is still one of the best known athletes in the country, three times better known by the general public than the average athlete, according to surveys by Q Score.

And while positive opinions of him are down from his heyday among the general public, sports fans still have a more positive view of him than the average athlete, according to the Q Score surveys.

“Why is Nike separating from Woods who has been a long-time brand ambassador for the brand? It could be that Nike is looking to get out of the golf business,” said Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, a sports and entertainment firm that evaluates sponsorships and advertising campaigns.

“Nike used to sell golf balls and clubs with its logo and that ended. It still sells golf clothing and footwear,” he said.

Smallwood said he would be surprised if the breakup was due to any concern that Woods was nearing the end of his career.

“Woods is synonymous with golf. Nike has stuck with him through his life trials and his comebacks,” he said. “Woods can play as long as he wants to in the PGA and then the Senior PGA. Look how long Nike has held on to Michael Jordan. He hasn’t played in over 20 years.”

In August, Woods was named the sixth player director on the powerful PGA Tour policy board, giving players a one seat advantage on the board after the controversial merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV golf. Woods had reportedly turned down nearly $1 billion to play in LIV golf.

Joshua Butler, founder of online golf clothing brand J. Butler Golf, called Woods a savvy business person “who understands that the landscape of golf is changing.”

“Nike has been pulling away from golf products. Tiger has vast opportunity to land somewhere else,” said Butler. “Golf clothing companies are coming into the market with other options, better options and varied price points.”

“It’s not that Nike has done anything wrong, it’s not that Tiger Woods may not necessarily be happy with his relationship with Nike for the last 27 years, but this is a golden opportunity to go after a younger crowd, to go after individuals who aren’t rich that want to play the game,” he said. “Tiger understands that, the importance of what he’s meant to the golf industry as well as to people of colour. That’s why I think this is such as monumental shift right now.”

Musician bites husband to death [Photo] https://www.adomonline.com/musician-bites-husband-to-death-photo/ Fri, 09 Apr 2021 15:55:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1946049 A Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, Daniel Omollo Onyango, has died after a fight with his wife at their home in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, April 8, said that Mr Onyango, 37, died as a result of low oxygen concentration in the blood after being bitten by his 27-year-old wife, Violet Asale Emu an upcoming local secular artiste whose stage name is Zian Achama.

According to the police report, the fight broke out on Sunday morning, April 4, just minutes after midnight at their two-bedroom house in Kahawa Wendani.

Preliminary investigation established that the deceased was furious about the one-bedroom house that his wife had rented and was demanding to know who pays the rent and who the other tenants are.

“So angry was the officer that he refused to partake in the night’s dinner. This led to an argument resulting into a physical fight at about 1:am in which the deceased bit his wife on the shoulder. The wife also bit the deceased’s finger, right side of the chest and back of the shoulder,” an investigator told Nation.Africa.

Thereafter, police said, the KDF private who is based at Gilgil, developed convulsions and was taken to the Kahawa Garrison Health Centre in Kiambu County where he was pronounced dead.

According to the couple’s neighbours, the two started arguing about 1:am, moments before they heard Asela screaming from the bedroom.

“We did not understand what they were arguing about but they have lately been having issues,” neighbours told Nation.Africa.

Shortly after the screams died down, neighbours said, the officer’s sister and aunt came out calling for help.

“We asked them what had happened and they said the couple had fought and that they needed a car to take the officer to the hospital,” another neighbour told Nation.Africa.

At the time, the deceased’s wife had already contacted Kahawa Garrison’s health centre requesting for an ambulance to drive her husband to the clinic.

“They travelled to the hospital with this car (a Toyota Vitz), but before they could get to the hospital, they met the ambulance rushing to the house and had the nurse check on the officer. The nurse pronounced him dead and asked them to go back home with the body and call the police,” another witness narrated.

At around 7:40am, regular police officers accompanied by DCI detectives from Githurai Kimbo police station learnt of the officer’s death through a call made to the station by the deceased’s colleague.

Detectives said the deceased’s relatives forced their way into the couple’s bedroom when they heard the officer’s wife screaming and found him lying still on the floor.

“His wife asked them for help in resuscitating him but they could not do much. He was already convulsing,” the police said.

“Realising he had developed convulsions and was sliding to his death, the wife rushed him to Kahawa Garrison Health Centre but it was too late to save his life. His body was cold and without a pulse,” DCI George Kinoti said on Twitter.

The officers then arrested the deceased’s wife, aunt and sister but released the latter two after questioning and recording their statements.

The officer’s wife was arraigned in court on Monday, as the murder investigations continue.
The deceased’s body was moved to Forces Memorial awaiting postmortem. The house has since been locked and declared a crime scene.

Tiger Woods back home from hospital after car crash https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-back-home-from-hospital-after-car-crash/ Wed, 17 Mar 2021 13:57:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1934684 Tiger Woods has returned home and will work on “getting stronger every day” following the car crash that left him with significant injuries.

The American, 45, needed surgery after suffering a fractured leg and shattered ankle in the crash.

The 15-time major champion was moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for follow-up procedures on 27 February.

On Wednesday he tweeted: “Happy to report that I am back home continuing my recovery.”

He added: “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.

“I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger everyday.”

Woods, who was recovering from back surgery at the time of his accident, was found unconscious and with his face and chin covered in blood at the scene.

Los Angeles police said there was no evidence Woods had been impaired by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods survived “what would otherwise have been a fatal crash” because the interior of his vehicle had remained largely intact.

Tiger Woods breaks silence 5 days after horrific car crash https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-breaks-silence-5-days-after-horrific-car-crash/ Mon, 01 Mar 2021 20:37:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1926565 Tiger Woods has spoken out following last week’s horrific car crash that left him with serious injuries.

In his first public statement since the accident, the American professional golfer thanked his fans for their support after his successful surgery.

“It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts,” Tiger tweeted. “To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time.”

According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23 in Rancho Palos Verdes, a city located in southwest Los Angeles.

Tiger was said to have been driving at a “relatively greater speed than normal” when the accident occurred. He has undergone multiple procedures to treat injuries to his lower right leg and ankle.

Tiger Woods ‘awake and responsive’ after surgery https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-awake-and-responsive-after-surgery/ Wed, 24 Feb 2021 13:25:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1924298 Tiger Woods is “awake and responsive” following surgery on serious leg injuries suffered in a car crash in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The 15-time golf major champion, 45, had to be “extricated from the wreck” by firefighters and paramedics.

The American suffered “open fractures affecting the tibia and fibula bones” in his lower right leg “stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia”.

Injuries to his foot and ankle have been stabilised with screws and pins.

“He [Woods] is recovering in his hospital room,” added a statement, published on Woods’ Twitter account.

Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer of the Harbor UCLA Medical Centre where Woods is being treated, said the open fractures were comminuted, meaning broken in more than two pieces.

Mahajan added: “Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

Woods ‘not able to stand’

Woods was “fortunate to be alive” said a deputy from the LA County Sheriff’s Department, who was first on the scene of the accident at 07:18 local time on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes.

Carlos Gonzalez said the golfer was “not able to stand under his own power” before being removed from the vehicle which had sustained major damage.

He said that the American was wearing his seatbelt and was “still calm and lucid” when he told him his name.

“It’s very fortunate that Mr Woods was able to come out of this alive,” he added.

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said that Woods’ car “crossed the centre-divider to the point that it rested several hundred feet away” and “that indicates they were going at a relatively greater speed than normal”.

He added: “However, because it is downhill, it slopes and curves, that area has a high frequency of accidents. It is not uncommon.”

He said the car hit a kerb, a tree and rolled over several times. Villanueva added “there was no evidence of impairment” with Woods.

Tiger Woods sustains ‘multiple leg injuries’ in serious car crash https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-sustains-multiple-leg-injuries-in-serious-car-crash/ Wed, 24 Feb 2021 09:07:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1924036 American golf player, Tiger Woods, has been taken to hospital with ‘multiple leg injuries’ after his car ‘sustained major damage’ in a crash.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released a statement on Tuesday confirming the incident.

The statement read: “On February 23, 2021, at approximately 7:12 AM, LASD responded to a single-vehicle roll-over traffic collision on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. The vehicle sustained major damage.

“The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick ‘Tiger’ Woods. Me Woods was extricated from the wreck with the ‘jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.

“The traffic investigation is being conducted by investigators from LASD Lomita Station.”

Video images of the scene showed the black sport utility vehicle resting on its side some 30 feet off the roadway, its front end badly damaged and surrounded by debris. The jaws of life refers to tools used to pry open vehicles involved in accidents when a victim may be trapped.

Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg released a statement giving further details:

“Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currenty in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”

The 45-year-old Woods is a former golf world number one, with 15 major championship wins, most recently winning the 2019 Masters after a lengthy period out of form.

The sheriff’s department said Woods was the only person in the car.

Tiger Woods ‘found by police asleep at wheel’ https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-found-police-asleep-wheel/ Tue, 30 May 2017 15:15:24 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=143031 Golfer Tiger Woods was found “asleep at the wheel” with the engine running when he was arrested, US media reports say.

Woods was found behind the wheel of his Mercedes, which was stopped in the road, and had to be woken by the arresting officer early on Monday.

“Woods had extremely slow and slurred speech”, a copy of the police report published by US outlets said. He was “cooperative” but “confused”, it said.

However, the golfer maintains alcohol was “not involved” in the incident.

Woods initially told the arresting officer he was coming back from LA, having been golfing, and said he did not know where he was. He then changed his story about where he was coming from and going to, the police report said.

Officers also recorded that Woods failed some of the roadside tests – such as standing on one leg.

But his breathalyser results showed he “blew zeroes” – indicating a lack of alcohol in his breath.

The player, who was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), blamed “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication”.

“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions,” he said.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications,” Woods said in a statement.

“I didn’t realise the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

Police released a mugshot of Woods, looking unshaven and unkempt, following his arrest in the town of Jupiter.

Tiger Woods arrested for drink-driving in Florida https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-arrested-drink-driving-florida/ Mon, 29 May 2017 19:12:34 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=141531 Golf star Tiger Woods was arrested on a drink-driving charge in Florida early on Monday morning, police say.

Police recorded the arrest at 07:18 local time (11:18 GMT). The golfer was released a few hours later, records from Palm Beach County police show.

He was arrested in the town of Jupiter at around 03:00 local time, media reports say. He has not made any comment.

The police record lists the charge as Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

It specifies an unlawful blood alcohol level and says that he was released on his “own recognizance”, meaning he promised in writing to co-operate with future legal proceedings.

The 41-year-old golfer has been recovering from recent back surgery and last blogged about his health on 24 May.

He wrote that the surgery had relieved terrible pain and that he hadn’t “felt this good in years”.

He said the outlook for a return to competitive golf was “positive” but that he was not in a “hurry”.

“I want to play professional golf again but I’m not looking ahead,” he said. “I can’t twist for another two and a half to three months. Right now, my sole focus is rehab and doing what the doctors tell me. I am concentrating on short-term goals.”

America’s 14-time major champion came back after 15 months out injured in December but has not played since his back problems recurred in February.

Plans to compete at Augusta in April – on the 20th anniversary of his first Masters win – had to be abandoned.

Tiger Woods has not won a tournament anywhere since 2013, while his title drought in major championships dates back to 2008.

An unwanted image – Ian Carter, golf correspondent for BBC Sport

The mugshot shows a dishevelled Tiger Woods, bleary-eyed and unshaven – just the sort of image he would not want associated with himself in public.

The picture will haunt him throughout these proceedings and beyond. This is someone who has put back together his public life after that epic fall from grace with all the news of the extramarital affairs that broke in 2009.

What we gather from someone who has a jealously guarded lifestyle in terms of his privacy is he spends most of his time playing computer games. We know he speaks glowingly about being a father and looking after his children.

He’s divorced and shares custody of his children and that’s pretty much all we know of Tiger Woods’ lifestyle at the moment, other than he says he wants to return to professional golf once this recovery has been completed.

Does golf need him as much as it once did? Perhaps not. A whole generation of golfers, with Rory McIlroy at the vanguard, have now come through. But Woods remains a huge box-office draw. Golf has suffered in his absence in recent years but it is getting used to the fact that he’s unlikely to come back right at the very top of the game.

His personal life came under intense scrutiny in 2009 after he was charged with careless driving outside his Florida home.

He later admitted to having had extra-marital affairs and made a frank public apology. He said he had received professional help and planned to undergo further therapy.

The golfer lost several sponsors over the scandal and took a break from competitive golf. He and Elin Nordegren later announced their divorce.

Tiger Woods: Fourteen-time major champion has fourth back operation https://www.adomonline.com/tiger-woods-fourteen-time-major-champion-fourth-back-operation/ Thu, 25 May 2017 11:43:37 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=136301 Tiger Woods says he “hasn’t felt this good in years” after having a fourth operation on his back, but added he will not “hurry” to return to golf.

America’s 14-time major champion, 41, came back after 15 months out injured in December, but has not played since his back problems recurred in February.

Plans to compete at Augusta in April – on the 20th anniversary of his first Masters win – had to be abandoned.

“I want to play professional golf again but I’m not looking ahead,” he said.

“I can’t twist for another two and a half to three months. Right now, my sole focus is rehab and doing what the doctors tell me. I am concentrating on short-term goals.”

Woods’ first return to competitive action came in December at the Hero World Challenge – an 18-man tournament in the Bahamas – and he finished 15th at the PGA Tour event.

He has not won a tournament anywhere since 2013, while his title drought in major championships dates back to 2008.

“It has been just over a month since I underwent fusion surgery on my back, and it is hard to express how much better I feel. It was instant nerve relief. I haven’t felt this good in years,” he wrote on his website.

“The long-term prognosis is positive. My surgeon and physiotherapist say the operation was successful. I’m walking and doing my exercises, and taking my kids to and from school. All I can do is take it day by day. There’s no hurry.

“But I want to say unequivocally, I want to play professional golf again.”
