Sackey’s remarks follow the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where Ghana finished bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches, failing to secure a single win.

Despite Otto Addo recording back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic after a difficult start, Sackey believes the current technical staff lacks the necessary experience and should be replaced.

“Our technical team is inexperienced, and that is why we are experiencing bad results,” Sackey told Asempa FM’s Sports Nite.

“The approach needs to be changed. If the right approach is taken, it will bring about good results.”

He further stressed, “If the Black Stars coach is not changed, it will be difficult to qualify for the World Cup.”

The current technical team comprises head coach Otto Addo, assistant coaches Joseph Laumann and John Paintsil, and goalkeeper coach Fatawu Dauda.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council is set to make a decision about Otto Addo’s future on Wednesday following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament.

Ghana will resume their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign in March 2025 with matches against Chad and Madagascar.

Black Stars: Maintain Chris Hughton ahead of 2023 AFCON – GFA urged https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-maintain-chris-hughton-ahead-of-2023-afcon-gfa-urged/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 12:53:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2323867 Former Black Princesses head coach, Robert Sackey has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to retain Chris Hughton ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The future of the 64-year-old Back Stars trainer hangs in a balance after losing to Comoros in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Football fans have called for the former Irish international to be sacked for the team’s poor performance in recent times.

However, Sackey believes it is too late for a new coach to prepare the team for the tournament to be hosted in Ivory Coast.

According to him, sacking Hughton before the tournament would cause a situation like the one in 2006.

“We are going toward the end of November, and you are talking about appointing a new head coach. It was the same problem we encountered in 2006,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM on the Sports Nite Show.

“It’s about psyching. How to be able to motivate the players to go and perform. I feel we should keep the coach because it is too late to sack him,” he added.

Ghana have been housed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique. The 34th edition of the tournament is expected to get underway from January 13 to February 11 in Ivory Coast.

Andre Ayew should not have started against Comoros – Former Ghana coach https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-should-not-have-started-against-comoros-former-ghana-coach/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 16:07:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2323370 Former Black Princesses head coach, Robert Sackey has criticized Chris Hughton’s decision to start Andre Ayew against Comoros.

The 33-year-old who has not actively played for the past seven months was named in Black Stars’ starting XI in their second group game in Moroni on Tuesday.

Ghana however conceded in the first half before Andre was substituted before the start of the second half and was replaced by Mohammed Kudus.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Sackey insisted that Andre, who joined French Ligue 1 side, Le Havre as a free agent before the first two games of the qualifiers after leaving Nottingham Forest had no business starting the game.

“Andre Ayew should not have started the game against Comoros,” he told Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“There is no doubt about his leadership qualities but it was wrong for the technical team to start him. This is a player who has not played for about seven months and so the decision was wrong. If he was introduced in the second half at a point where Ghana was winning, that would have been fair but starting him in a game that you needed to win was wrong,” he added.

Myziane Maolida’s 43rd-minute strike sealed the win for the home side.

Ghana after two games played sits third with just three points and will face Mali in their next Group I game in March 2024.
