United drew 1-1 with the relegation-threatened Hammers at Old Trafford in December, with Mainoo left on the bench throughout – and Amorim deciding Lisandro Martinez for Luke Shaw was a better final substitution as he looked for a winner.

“You always ask me the same thing,” said United’s then manager, when questioned why he had left the 20-year-old on the bench.

“I understand what you are saying. You love Kobbie. He starts for England, but that doesn’t mean I need to put Kobbie on when I feel I shouldn’t.”

The “you love Kobbie” comment felt personal. The rationale, in Amorim’s mind, for why he was repeatedly being asked by the media why he hardly used Mainoo.

That assessment missed the point.

It was not that the media loved Mainoo. It was that they had previously seen the positive benefits he can bring to a team.

Judging by the 25,000 likes on a social media post on X during the 2-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday, observing that with each passing game Amorim’s stance on Mainoo looks ridiculous, huge numbers of fans had seen it too.

Fans also failed to understand why the academy-raised midfielder did not start a single Premier League match this season prior to Amorim’s departure.

Amorim’s initial replacement, Darren Fletcher, brought Mainoo on for the final 16 minutes of last month’s draw at Burnley, having ditched the three-man central defence to allow for an extra player in the middle of the pitch.

The midfielder started the following game against Brighton in the FA Cup and has kept his place for all four matches of Michael Carrick’s short reign.

Against Tottenham, Mainoo created Bryan Mbeumo’s opener with a deft pass to the edge of the penalty area with the inside of his right foot after dashing across the goal to meet Bruno Fernandes’ short corner.

“Yes, there’s no doubt,” said Carrick afterwards, upon being asked whether Mainoo was back to the level of his breakthrough season in 2023-24, when he scored in the FA Cup final and started for England in the Euros final defeat by Spain.

Some still do not get it.

On the face of it, seven goals and five assists in 90 first-team appearances does not look much.

But that is not the point. Mainoo has an excellent feel for the flow of games and is an all-round midfielder.

That applied to Carrick himself two decades ago. It was the reason Sir Alex Ferguson brought him north from Tottenham.

In a chat with his brother Graeme for the Football Association before he left United in 2018, Carrick himself explained the subtleties of a “great pass”.

“The execution is probably the easiest bit a lot of the time,” he said.

“It is about preparing for it, getting your body position right, understanding the context of the game, knowing the risk and reward.

“Even if it is a three-yard pass, you are giving the ball to someone for them to do something instantly. If they have to take a touch and another touch to get hold of the ball, it is not a great pass.

“You should be dictating what the next pass should be, and your own passing angle should be right.

“It is a great pass if the next part is how you see it in your head.”

Mainoo’s resurgence has created separate debates.

The first, clearly, relates to Amorim, not just on one individual player but an apparent lack of trust in United’s academy, which staff members picked up on and were furious about.

The second relates to England.

It is amazing to think six of Mainoo’s 10 senior caps came during Euro 2024. He played the first Nations League game immediately afterwards, but – after pulling out of the October squad that followed – has not featured since.

Giving himself a chance to break into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad was the reason why he was so keen to join Napoli on loan before the summer transfer window closed.

Now he has five games at the most – starting with Tuesday’s return meeting at West Ham – to force his way into Tuchel’s plans for the March friendlies with Uruguay and Japan, two years after gatecrashing Gareth Southgate’s squad at just the right time.

With Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, who are all on United’s radar as they look to reinforce their midfield in the summer, named in November’s squad, Mainoo has his work cut out.

Carrick knows the youngster has time on his side.

“We have to be careful about putting so much on his shoulders and expecting so much of him,” he said.

“He’s still learning the game. He’s had a big high, and then, obviously, didn’t play for a little bit.

“It’s easy to think he’s a lot older and more experienced than he is. He’s just got to be patient.”

Man Utd midfielder’s half-brother wears ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-midfielders-half-brother-wears-free-kobbie-mainoo-t-shirt/ Tue, 16 Dec 2025 09:01:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610804 A T-shirt worn by Kobbie Mainoo’s half-brother was among the post-match talking points at Old Trafford – even after a game as thrilling as the 4-4 draw between Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Jordan Mainoo-Hames wore a ‘free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt during the match, a move that risks making a delicate situation even more fraught.

Mainoo’s United future is the subject of huge debate, with head coach Ruben Amorim yet to hand him a single Premier League start this season.

Amorim has defended himself on numerous occasions against allegations he does not rate Mainoo and that he has no trust in United’s academy.

The 20-year-old was keen to join Napoli in the summer but United refused to sanction the move.

Mainoo was introduced to rapturous applause with just under 30 minutes left of Monday’s game against Bournemouth. It was his third-longest runout in a Premier League match this season, taking his minutes for the campaign to 302.

It is understood that Napoli are still keen to sign the England international – as are a large number of other clubs.

But United know if they were to let Mainoo leave for the remainder of the campaign to improve his chances of making England’s World Cup squad, they would have to spend significantly more to bring in a replacement because he is on relatively low wages.

Amorim was not asked about the T-shirt post-match, but spoke about Mainoo last Friday.

He refused to say if he would sanction a January move but he would welcome Mainoo seeking him out for a chat.

“I had some conversations with him, especially last year, and with other players, but about that subject, no, I didn’t speak with him,” said Amorim.

“I will be really pleased if Kobbie comes to talk to me about that. I just want my players happy.

“I understand every individual has their goals and the frustration doesn’t help anybody.

“I’m not going to say what I would say but I would talk to him.

“I am completely open, that is clear. I have my ideas and that is also clear. I will not change if I don’t believe it but I’m open to speak with any player. I love that.”

Amorim has not just upset Mainoo recently.

Before the Bournemouth game, he claimed 18-year-old defender Harry Amass was “struggling in the Championship” with Sheffield Wednesday, even though he is the club’s player of the month. In addition, he said 18-year-old forward Chido Obi was “not always a starter in the Under-21s”.

The comments are understood to have gone down badly with both player representatives and senior academy staff.

Both 18-year-olds posted on social media highlighting their achievements before later deleting their posts.

Amass posted a photo holding Sheffield Wednesday’s player of the month award for November with a smiling emoji, while Obi also posted an Instagram story showing him celebrating a goal for the Under-21s against Manchester City in August.

Manchester United blocks Kobbie Mainoo’s summer transfer request https://www.adomonline.com/manchester-united-blocks-kobbie-mainoos-summer-transfer-request/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 13:15:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572635 Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the club blocked midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s proposed move this summer.

The 19-year-old, who struggled for form at the start of the season, reportedly requested a transfer following United’s 2-1 EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town on Wednesday. Clubs across Europe, including Napoli, had expressed interest, but United opted to retain the English midfielder of Ghanaian descent.

Speaking ahead of United’s home clash against Burnley at Old Trafford, Amorim emphasised Mainoo’s importance to the squad.

“I want Kobbie to stay. We need Kobbie, but he needs to fight for his place, and my position is not going to change,” he stated.

Mainoo, who was also linked with Chelsea in January before that move fell through, has already cemented himself as a first-team contributor. He has made 73 senior appearances for United, recording seven goals and three assists.

Under contract until June 2027, with an option for an additional year, Mainoo remains central to United’s long-term plans. His current market value is estimated at €50 million, reflecting his potential and growing influence at the club.

Mainoo stars as Man Utd secure last-16 spot with win at FCSB https://www.adomonline.com/mainoo-stars-as-man-utd-secure-last-16-spot-with-win-at-fcsb/ Fri, 31 Jan 2025 05:01:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2499108 Manchester United advanced straight to the Europa League last 16 as Kobbie Mainoo scored one and assisted another to help Ruben Amorim’s side to a win at FCSB.

After a relatively drab first 60 minutes in Bucharest Mainoo’s low pass found wing-back Diogo Dalot, who was unmarked at the back post to comfortably tap United ahead.

Eight minutes later the England midfielder got on to the scoresheet by side-footing home Alejandro Garnacho’s cut-back.

Amorim opted to start Mainoo in a more advanced position and the midfielder rewarded the Portuguese’s call with his first goal of the season, having not hit the net since United’s win in last season’s FA Cup final.

“I enjoyed it,” the 19-year-old told TNT Sports after full-time. “I am just happy to be on the pitch for Manchester United.”

The visitors end the competition’s league phase in third, and will play one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or FC Midtjylland in a last-16 tie in March.

They avoid a two-legged play-off round in February, which after the match Amorim said would be “really important” to give his players more time to train and “build connections”.

Amorim cannot guarantee Mainoo’s Man Utd future https://www.adomonline.com/amorim-cannot-guarantee-mainoos-man-utd-future/ Sat, 11 Jan 2025 10:44:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491806 Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he wants to keep Kobbie Mainoo at the club – but offered no guarantees it will actually happen.

The England midfielder, 19, was linked with Chelsea earlier this week amid a continuing stand-off over his proposed contract extension.

United officials say they have been concentrating on securing the futures of Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo, who had been free to talk to overseas clubs from 1 January.

That pair have now agreed extensions but Mainoo remains on his existing contract, which still has two and a half years to run.

Sources close to the teenager feel they are in a strong position to agree a hefty increase given his enhanced status as an international and regular member of United’s starting line-up under Amorim and, previously, Erik ten Hag.

However, the issue is complicated by what United acknowledge to be a ‘tight’ situation regarding profit and sustainability and the knowledge that selling homegrown players creates greater flexibility to sign players under the Premier League’s financial rules, which the Old Trafford outfit are committed to.

“Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players we build for this club,” said Amorim before the FA Cup trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

“But we know the position the club is in at the moment. We will see.”

United are aware of the likely negative reaction from supporters should Mainoo be sold and the likelihood is he will remain at the club for the rest of the season.

“I really love my players,” added Amorim. “I want to keep them, especially the talented ones.

“It is a hard moment and I am really happy with Kobbie. He is improving.”

United have been linked with a number of players during the current transfer window, including Paris St-Germain full-back Nuno Mendes, 22.

But Amorim has already said he needs to sell before he can buy and clarified the situation further when he spoke on Friday.

“I don’t remember to say clearly that I want new players,” he said.

“What I said is sometimes the profile for this [3-4-3] system is different and the players came here with a different idea around how to play.

“We need to improve recruitment when we are targeting players to be sure they will cope with demands and sometimes you have to bet a little bit. We also have to improve our academy to do some business to invest in the team.”

Chelsea leading the chase for Kobbie Mainoo if he leaves Manchester United https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-leading-the-chase-for-kobbie-mainoo-if-he-leaves-manchester-united/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 10:32:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490564 Chelsea are leading the chase to sign Kobbie Mainoo in a sensational deal if the Manchester United midfielder leaves Old Trafford.

United have reached a stalemate in contract talks with Mainoo’s representatives, alerting Europe’s top clubs to the fact he could be sold this month or at the end of the season.

Mail Sport understands that Chelsea are in pole position to sign the 19-year-old if he cannot agree new terms at United, although there is bound to be competition from their Premier League rivals and big clubs abroad.

United will hope that a compromise can still be reached and they can keep hold of their homegrown star.

Mainoo signed a new contract last year which ties him to United until June 2027, but he has been in talks over a new deal that would reflect his status as a first-team regular and England international who started in the final of Euro 2024.

However, United are trying to drive down their wage bill as they look to offload big earners like Casemiro on £375,000-a-week, Marcus Rashford on £315,000 and Antony on £200,000 in the January window.

The budget squeeze has hampered negotiations with Mainoo who knows he would be able to command better terms elsewhere.

The player is also believed to be concerned over the direction of the club and his chances of playing Champions League football, with Ruben Amorim’s side currently in 13th place in the Premier League table.

After a breakthrough season under Erik ten Hag, Mainoo has had a dip in form this term but underlined his potential as one of the best midfielders in the country with his recent performances against Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Stockport teenager is a poster boy for United’s famed academy system and had previously been seen as untouchable.

But the club’s financial problems and struggle to comply with profit and sustainability rules – under which homegrown players are worth roughly four times as much as other players – has made it a reality.

It’s one more reason why United are more open to letting Rashford go in January, and would also consider selling Alejandro Garnacho – another player previously seen as off limits.

The only two players currently untouchable at Old Trafford are £59million summer signing Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo, who is close to signing a new contract after establishing himself as a key player under Amorim.

Euro 2024: Why Mainoo has ‘wow factor’ – and could be one of the greats https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-why-mainoo-has-wow-factor-and-could-be-one-of-the-greats/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 07:59:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421635 Sometimes kids come along and you only need one look at them to realise they’ve got it – that special something where you know they belong at the highest level.

Kobbie Mainoo is one of those kids.

It was back in February, after he had scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester United, that I said he reminded me of legendary Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf.

When I said Kobbie gave me ‘Seedorf vibes’, I wasn’t talking about his ability, I just meant style-wise, in terms of his movement.

I spoke to Clarence about him here in Germany the other day and he said he definitely sees it too.

The thing about Kobbie, though, is he seems to get better every time you watch him play. As well as his movement, there’s his decision-making and the pace of his passing, plus the way he always seems to be in control and the way he handles everything that is thrown at him despite only being 19.

The best part of his game, though, is that he is prepared to wait. Let me try to explain what I mean.

Choosing the right moment

England midfielder Kobbie MainooIMAGE SOURCE: PA

Image caption: Mainoo made his England debut when he came off the bench against Brazil in March

When you’re a young kid, playing at the level Kobbie is, you sometimes try to prove why you are there. I know from my own experience that you feel you always have to show what you can do, and you can end up trying too hard.

Kobbie’s not like that, though. He won’t try to push it and over-play.

I’ve watched him closely and the first 30% of passes of the ball he gets in a game, in those opening minutes, he is happy just playing the ball short, five or 10 yards, waiting for the right moment for his natural raw ability to come out.

Then, when the moment comes – and he knows exactly when – he can give you that little bit of ‘wow’ factor where he draws someone out, breaks the press or when the opposition think they are going to nick the ball off him. Those times when they have got him down a blind alley but he somehow just comes out the end anyway and you are left going ‘oh my god’.

What he is doing is a part of the game – and I heard Gareth Southgate say this too, by the way – that he makes look very easy, but is actually one of the most difficult things.

Ask any midfielder what it is like to receive the ball from your defence with your back to play, not knowing what is behind you and with people pressing you from behind from different angles, but being able to feel where they are and still get out.

Waiting for his chance

Image caption: Mainoo started each of England’s three group games on the bench, and came on in two of them. He has started all three knockout games so far at Euro 2024

It took Gareth a little while to realise Kobbie is the right man to partner Declan Rice in England’s midfield.

First he tried Trent Alexander-Arnold at these Euros, then it was Conor Gallagher. But Gareth knows now, and so does everyone else. You cannot leave Kobbie out.

I said that straight away after I watched us beat Slovakia in the last 16, which was the first competitive international Kobbie had started.

I thought there was no way Gareth could have watched that game and thought ‘oh, we still need to experiment in midfield’. The kid showed he is the real deal, so that’s it. He has to play.

Kobbie’s age and lack of experience is almost irrelevant. He already plays way beyond his years. He knows he belongs at this level and it is like nothing fazes him at all.

On Sunday, he is going to be playing in a European Championship final as a teenager but there is no way the size of the occasion is going to intimidate him.

We saw that at the FA Cup final, not just with his man-of-the-match performance but also his celebration, or lack of it, after helping Manchester United beat Manchester City at Wembley. A lot of other players his age would be a bit over-exuberant maybe, but he is just so level-headed and calm.

Part of that is down to his background. I spent a bit of time with his family earlier in the tournament, and after the semi-final win over the Netherlands too.

They were enjoying themselves and having a good time, soaking it all up the same way I expect Kobbie is, but without going crazy or getting carried away. They are all really lovely, balanced, grounded, well-rounded people, which is why he is the same and appears to be unaffected by fame.

Image caption: Kobbie Mainoo celebrates with his family after England’s Euro 2024 semi-final win over the Netherlands

What can he do next?

Kobbie is already an incredible player. When this tournament is over, hopefully, he will have helped England become champions of Europe.

But whether we beat Spain in Sunday’s final or not, I hope he embraces this moment and enjoys it… but then starts thinking ‘what can I add now?’

You get some kids who arrive on the scene and make a huge splash but some of that success is down to them being a surprise. No-one knows who they are, but that only lasts so long when you are on the biggest stage.

Kobbie has had an amazing few months, from making his first Premier League start in November, to playing in such huge games for England at this tournament. But this is only the start for him, so how can he enhance his game?

That’s what all the very best players did, including Seedorf himself. He told me he taught himself how to have a left foot because he knew it would make a difference, something that meant he could go both ways and become more of a threat.

So can Kobbie open his game up so he can play more passes over 20 yards, so he can pick up the ball from the full-backs and ping them forward like Paul Scholes used to?

Are we going to see him get more shots off next season, or take a few more risks with his passes?

I am not saying that these are the things that he has to do, but I want to see him continue to develop.

There are elements Kobbie could add that could turn him from being a very good player to being one of the greats – that Seedorf level, basically. That’s what he should be aiming for.

Euro 2024: Kobbie Mainoo can change England’s fortunes – Scholes https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-kobbie-mainoo-can-change-englands-fortunes-scholes/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 16:28:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2413240 Former England midfielder Paul Scholes is backing Kobbie Mainoo to be the man to change the fortunes of Gareth Southgate’s side at Euro 2024.

Despite having four points from their first two matches, The Three Lions have received criticism for their performances.

England started their campaign with a 1-0 win against Serbia before a dire 1-1 draw with Denmark left fans feeling uninspired both in Germany and at home.

They face Slovenia in their final group game and after calling Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role in midfield an “experiment”, Southgate is expected to make a change in that position.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Scholes said the young Manchester United star is the man for the job.

“Obviously, I said I’d like to see Mainoo come into the midfield,” Scholes said. “I think he is, along with Declan Rice, probably England’s best midfielder.

“To have a right back [Alexander-Arnold] playing in there in your position and you’ve gone as a central midfielder, that won’t be nice. It will be difficult to take.

“I see Kobbie Mainoo in this England squad, in this England team for the next 10 years at least.

“He’ll bring quality into that midfield area that we’ve really lacked. He knows the position, he’s played the position. He’ll help Declan Rice. He’ll help Jude Bellingham and he could possibly knit the whole thing together.”

Mainoo enjoyed a breakthrough season in an under-performing Manchester United squad and scored the decisive goal in their shock FA Cup final win against Manchester City.

Scholes thinks Mainoo’s inclusion will also help give Phil Foden the freedom to make an impact after his uncharacteristically lethargic performances so far.

“Phil Foden can pop up anywhere he wants on a football pitch and he’ll be a threat,” Scholes said. “Now, if Kobbie Mainoo came in, all of a sudden you have control. You have a player who makes your team play football. Sometimes it takes just one player to be able do that.

“You think of Toni Kroos with Germany, he just makes them play football. He makes Real Madrid play football. I think Rodri at Manchester City and Spain – he makes your team play football and I think Kobbie Mainoo has got that, the ability to do that.

“That, all of a sudden, it frees up the likes of Jude Bellingham, who’s not worried about having to come back all the time and try and help with the build-up because he’s brilliant going forward. Phil Foden exactly the same. I just think that one change could make a helluva difference to this team.”

Despite Scholes wanting Mainoo to replace Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool man would not be ejected from the starting XI, if it was up to the former Manchester United midfielder.

“He’s not a midfield player,” Scholes said of Alexander-Arnold. “It was quite obvious before he went he’s not going to be a midfield player.

“I think, in a full-back role, at right-back, you get more time on the ball – there’s nobody around you, you don’t have to be aware of what’s around you, who’s going to tackle you. How much time have I got on the ball?”

With Alexander-Arnold unlikely to dislodge Kyle Walker at right-back, Scholes would push him to left-back, at the expense of Kieran Trippier.

“Trippier tries his best in that position, of course, but I just don’t see what he brings,” Scholes said.

“I saw it for years with Denis Irwin. Brilliant quality as a right-footed left-back. If we’re going to do that, it has to be someone who’s going to give you something on the ball and I think Trent is capable of doing that.”

Although Scholes does not think Southgate will make drastic changes for their next match, he hopes there will be one big addition.

He said: “I wouldn’t be that bothered as long as Mainoo’s the one that comes into midfield. I think he can change the whole outlook and perception of this team. I think he can be that good and devastating for him.”

Euro 2024: I’ve learned a lot from Denmark’s Eriksen – Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/euro-2024-ive-learned-a-lot-from-denmarks-eriksen-mainoo/ Wed, 19 Jun 2024 06:18:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410466 England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says the “great journey” Denmark and Manchester United team-mate Christian Eriksen has been on is “amazing”, as the two nations prepare to meet in Group C on Thursday.

Eriksen scored the opening goal in Denmark’s first game of Euro 2024 against Slovenia – exactly 1,100 days after he had a cardiac arrest on the pitch in their opening match of the 2021 Euros.

The 32-year-old midfielder was later fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), which has allowed him to continue his career in the Premier League.

“I have learned a lot from him, watching him last season when I wasn’t playing as much, trying to learn and pick up from his game as well,” said Mainoo.

“The great journey he has been on since the last Euros is amazing. To be around him so close, he’s such a great player.

“If I’m to play on Thursday I’ll have to put that to the side to compete against him and hopefully get the win.”

Rasmus Hojlund, another of Mainoo’s United team-mates, is also in the Denmark side, but the 19-year-old midfielder says the two have not spoken about the match.

“I’ve not spoken to him recently, but I’ll probably leave that for after the game,” he added.

“I haven’t played against him before. He’s a really good friend, it’s good to have those relationships on the pitch and you build them off the pitch and around the training ground.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be staying at the club despite speculation around his future, and Mainoo says he owes a lot to the Dutchman, who gave him his Premier League debut and coached him through a breakthrough season which culminated in making the England squad.

“Happy to be building with him – got two trophies, hopefully, there’s more to come,” added the teenager.

“It’s nice to have that peace of mind to know what manager we have when we go back in pre-season. I’m so grateful for him that he put so much trust and belief in me to play in the team.

“I can’t thank him enough.”

Mainoo is competing for a place in England’s midfield to play with likely starters Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

Real Madrid’s Bellingham is among the candidates to win the Ballon d’Or for his starring role in the La Liga and Champions League-winning side.

Asked if Bellingham could be crowned the world’s best player this year, Mainoo said: “Yeah definitely. I mean everyone knows how great a player he is. We see it everyday in training.

“He’s such a nice guy as well. He’s demanding, he has high standards that he sets and to play with him is great.

“Dec [Rice] is also such a good player, so reliable and so good on the ball and dominant in midfield, so when I did get to play with him it’s always a joy to have someone so strong on the ball next to you. You can always trust him no matter where you are on the pitch.

“Everyone knows he’s worth every penny, he’s such a good player. He’s proved that in the Premier League and also on the international level.

“[Playing alongside Rice], it frees me up a lot and allows me to go forward and attack and I always know that when I go I can trust that he’s there. It’s a dream.”

I considered playing for Ghana – England midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/i-considered-playing-for-ghana-england-midfielder-kobbie-mainoo/ Tue, 18 Jun 2024 15:19:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2410053 Manchester United midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo has revealed that he considered playing for Ghana before playing for the Three Lions.

Born to Ghanaian parents in the United Kingdom, Mainoo made his debut for the English national team against Brazil in March earlier this year.

The 19-year-old midfielder was on the radar of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) before making his debut appearance for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Mainoo made an appearance in England’s 1-0 hard-fought win against Serbia in the ongoing 2024 European Championship in Germany.

Speaking ahead of their second Group C game against Denmark on Thursday, Mainoo admitted that he is proud of his Ghanaian heritage and considered playing for the Black Stars.

However, he said playing for England is a dream come true.

“I’m proud of my Ghanaian heritage but it has always been a dream to play for England. I’m happy to be here. I considered it, but I want to play for England” he told the press on Tuesday.

Prior to the match on Sunday, Mainoo had only made three appearances for the Three Lions and was still eligible to play for the Black Stars if he decided to.

Kobbie Mainoo in his debut season with Manchester United made 25 appearances and scored three goals.

Kobbie Mainoo must learn from Michael Essien – Ex-Chelsea midfielder https://www.adomonline.com/kobbie-mainoo-must-learn-from-michael-essien-ex-chelsea-midfielder/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 14:36:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2408705 Former Chelsea midfielder, Claude Makelele, has expressed admiration for Manchester United midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo, drawing comparisons to Michael Essien.

Makelele praised Mainoo’s potential, noting his standout performances despite Manchester United’s challenges in the past season.

The 19-year-old midfielder impressed with three goals in 24 Premier League appearances, including a crucial goal against Manchester City to secure the FA Cup.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Makelele highlighted Mainoo as a top choice for England’s midfield trio, alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

“To complete England’s midfield, I will go for Rice, Bellingham, and this boy in Manchester [Mainoo],” Makelele said.

“He is very good, so young, but he demonstrated that he can play. He is young but he has quality. I think he will give some spice in midfield.”

When asked about comparisons between Mainoo and former teammate Clarence Seedorf, Makelele drew parallels to Michael Essien instead.

“I will say Michael Essien,” Makelele affirmed. “He needs to learn more from Michael Essien. He is young, you know, and he has a great future in front of him.”

Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo has earned a spot in England’s squad for the upcoming 2024 Euro tournament in Germany, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

Kobbie Mainoo makes England’s final squad for Euro 2024 as Grealish and Maddison dropped https://www.adomonline.com/kobbie-mainoo-makes-englands-final-squad-for-euro-2024-as-grealish-and-maddison-dropped/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 17:14:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2405640 Gareth Southgate has announced his final England squad for Euro 2024, with Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Harry Maguire all missing out.

Southgate initially picked a 33-player training group but that has now been cut down to 26 ahead of tomorrow’s 11pm deadline for final submissions.

Maddison and Curtis Jones were the first players to be omitted from the squad, and the Tottenham playmaker took to social media to say he is “devastated” by the decision.

Maguire’s fitness had been a worry coming into the training camp after missing the latter stages of the season at Manchester United due to a calf injury.

Maguire – who played in all of England’s qualifying matches – said he is “absolutely gutted”.

Grealish struggled for game time at Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s side retained the Premier League title and did not feature in their final four fixtures of the season.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah have also been cut from the squad ahead of the final selection.

Everton showed their support for Branthwaite on social media and posted: “Head up, Jarrad.

“You can be proud of everything you have achieved this season – including the first of what will be many caps for your country.”

A fine end to the season for Adam Wharton has seen the Crystal Palace midfielder take an unexpected spot in the squad and he is joined by team-mates Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen has kept his place among a fiercely competitive attacking group, which also features Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer.

There was much pre-selection talk about who would be chosen out of Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins. Southgate has decided to keep both strikers at his disposal in Germany.

England play Iceland in a friendly on June 7, before beginning their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16.

They will then face further group-stage matches against Denmark and Slovenia on June 20 and June 25 respectively.

My family support my decision to play for England over Ghana – Kobbie Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/my-family-support-my-decision-to-play-for-england-over-ghana-kobbie-mainoo/ Sat, 25 May 2024 23:02:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2400062 Manchester United midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo says his family fully supports his decision to decline an opportunity to play for Ghana’s Black Stars and instead represent England.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the Three Lions in March during a friendly match against Brazil.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Stockport, England, Mainoo had the option to play for Ghana at the senior level but chose to represent England.

Having already played for England at various youth levels, Mainoo now has the chance to compete in this year’s European Championships after being named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad.

“Maybe distant family when I’m in Ghana give me a bit for it but, no, they all support me in my decision,” Mainoo commented.

Meanwhile, Mainoo scored as Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-1 to win the FA Cup on Saturday at Wembley Stadium.

Kobbie Mainoo says he has experienced ‘whirlwind of emotions’ since England call-up https://www.adomonline.com/kobbie-mainoo-says-he-has-experienced-whirlwind-of-emotions-since-england-call-up/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 05:56:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2371377 Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he is targeting a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad after a “mad couple of days”.

Mainoo, 18, was originally named in the under-21s squad but has been promoted to Gareth Southgate’s senior side for friendlies against Brazil on Saturday and Belgium on 26 March at Wembley.

“I was shocked and happy,” Mainoo told BBC Radio 5 Live’s John Murray.

“It’s been a whirlwind of emotions, a pretty mad couple of days.”

Mainoo, who was brought up in Stockport, only made his first Premier League start in November but has since become a regular under United boss Erik ten Hag.

He scored a dramatic 97th-minute winner in a 4-3 win at Wolves on 1 February.

“I had to adapt quickly to the Premier League. Obviously, it’s very demanding physically, and also mentally, so it’s been tough,” Mainoo added.

“But I feel like I’ve found my feet a bit now and I’m enjoying it.

“The games have been coming so fast at United but now I’m here [with England], obviously I am taking it all in and it’s been amazing.”

Asked about his hopes of making the squad for the European Championship in Germany, Mainoo said: “I think that’s the end goal for the season, to get into that squad.

“But obviously I’ve got to focus on club football in the meantime, and hopefully that’ll figure itself out.”

Kobbie Mainoo England call-up: Manchester United midfielder’s rise to stardom https://www.adomonline.com/kobbie-mainoo-england-call-up-manchester-united-midfielders-rise-to-stardom/ Wed, 20 Mar 2024 09:38:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2370984 Teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has earned his first call-up to the England squad after an impressive breakthrough season with Manchester United.

Despite clamour from media and pundits, Mainoo, 18, was initially left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad announcement for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. But the late call offers a chance to impress before the European Championship in Germany this summer.

Injuries and lack of form for others opened a door for Mainoo to secure a place in United boss Erik ten Hag’s plans late in 2023 when he made his first senior appearance of this campaign against Everton in November.

The academy graduate looked immediately at home and has gone on to make 20 appearances, including starting 14 of the past 15 matches.

He scored a stunning individual 97th-minute winner in a 4-3 Premier League classic against Wolves at Molineux in February and in the post-match interview told TNT Sports with a big grin that it was a “dream come true”.

“I have still not come down from it. I still feel like I am dreaming to be honest,” Mainoo said at the time. “To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing.”

And BBC pundit Ian Wright posted: “Kobbie Mainoo has to be in the next England squad. Such maturity in chaotic conditions that we’ve not seen from an England player in a long time. Impressed every time I watch him.”

Mainoo’s quick feet, balance and pace had commentators purring again on Sunday as he weaved past three Liverpool players to create a 34th-minute chance for Scott McTominay in another 4-3 thriller.

Mainoo is the latest teenage star to come through the United ranks and burst on to the Premier League stage.

Four of the past five 90th-minute winning goals in the Premier League by players aged 18 or younger have been for United: Federico Macheda in 2009, Marcus Rashford in 2016, Alejandro Garnacho in 2022 and now Mainoo.

‘He would walk through teams’

His quick feet might have come as a surprise to United fans who have only seen him as a deep-lying central midfielder, but not to those who have followed his career from a young age.

Mainoo started his football career with local side Cheadle and Gatley JFC in Greater Manchester, at just five years old.

Steve Vare coached Mainoo when the player was six – and knew even then he had someone special on his hands.

“I have had other kids who were exceptional at that age that have not gone on to the levels he has,” Vare told BBC Sport. “You think he is a good player. You try and test and challenge him, even at that young age.

Kobbie Mainoo

“It was quite obvious when Kobbie came down that he was strong, quick, good with the ball at his feet. I had to try and challenge him by loading the teams up so all the better kids were on the other team to make it a challenge for him. I then started to play him against the older boys, to challenge him.

“At that age, he was already very quick. He used to accelerate really quickly with the ball and go past players. He was strong. He was wiry. He was hard to knock off the ball. At that age, it is kick-and-run football but he used to keep it very close to his feet. He used to weave in and out of cones and challenges where the ball is stuck to his feet.

“You would have kids where they would just boot the ball or weren’t that interested in the coaching element, just playing matches. Kobbie was always keen to listen and learn.

“You just knew you had to put the better players on the opposing team to try and challenge him. He would walk through teams, scoring six or seven goals.

“We used to give a man-of-the-match award at the end of every session. You could have given it to him every week. You had to give it to the most improved player rather than him dominating all the time.”

‘He gives me Seedorf vibes’

Vare spoke to Mainoo’s father Felix and told him to get his son into a professional academy. The youngster joined Manchester United and the rest is history.

Of the youngsters currently playing for Cheadle and Gatley, where Vare is now a committee member, he said: “It gives everyone a boost that they could be the next Kobbie Mainoo.”

Mainoo’s status already at United is that of the academy lad come good. It is a mantle he has inherited from Rashford.

And in Mainoo, they seem to have unearthed another local talent who is here to stay.

“One minute I’m on the floor and then Kobbie Mainoo produces a moment that we have seen in the academy before,” former United defender Rio Ferdinand said on TNT Sports after the Wolves win in February. “He has translated that into senior football and he deserves his flowers.

“The composure that this kid shows at this level stands out immensely in his game. In the youth team he has always looked like a class player, and to translate that into the first team without an issue is the sign of someone who has a bright future. He understands the standards that are set here and the history and everything.

“I’m not saying he is the same player or of the same ability but he gives me vibes of Clarence Seedorf. The way he can manoeuvre in tight situations and the way he manipulates the ball and uses his body at times. Elusive as well. Some people see the headlines and he just caresses it.”

Ghana target Kobbie Mainoo earns first England call-up https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-target-kobbie-mainoo-earns-first-england-call-up/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 15:47:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2370685 Manchester United’s rising star, Kobbie Mainoo, has received his maiden call-up to the England senior squad.

The midfielder’s standout performance in United’s thrilling 4-3 victory against Liverpool during the FA Cup quarter-finals caught the attention of selectors.

Initially slated to join the England Under-21 squad during the current international break, Mainoo’s trajectory took a swift turn when the Football Association (FA) announced his promotion to the senior team.

England is set to take on Brazil at Wembley this Saturday, followed by a clash with Belgium at the same venue next Tuesday, in friendly matches crucial for fine-tuning their squad ahead of the European Championship in Germany later this year.

Despite also being eligible to represent Ghana, Mainoo has opted to pursue his international career with England.

Having previously showcased his talent at Under-17 and Under-19 levels, Mainoo’s exceptional form for United this season has fueled calls for his inclusion in the senior setup.

While initially left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad last week, Southgate acknowledged Mainoo’s progress but emphasized the importance of allowing him to develop steadily.

Meanwhile, there has been interest from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as well.

Dr. Randy Abbey, an Executive Council member of the GFA, confirmed the association’s eagerness to recruit Mainoo for the Black Stars, expressing admiration for his talent and indicating a desire to collaborate with him and other promising players, both domestically and internationally.

“The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” he told The Times in February earlier this year.

“Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him at home and abroad,” he added.

Wayne Rooney likens young Kobbie Mainoo to Bastian Schweinsteiger https://www.adomonline.com/wayne-rooney-likens-young-kobbie-mainoo-to-bastian-schweinsteiger/ Sat, 09 Mar 2024 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367031 Manchester United icon, Wayne Rooney has showered praise on Kobbie Mainoo, drawing parallels between the talented midfielder and a “young Bastian Schweinsteiger.”

Mainoo, from England with Ghanaian roots, showcased his prowess in his 22nd appearance across all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s squad against Everton at Old Trafford last Saturday.

The 18-year-old has dazzled spectators with his stellar performances this season, finding the back of the net twice for the team.

Notably, he clinched a spectacular winner in a thrilling 4-3 triumph against Wolverhampton Wanderers and also contributed to a 4-2 victory over Newport County in the FA Cup.

Rooney, speaking to TNT Sports, expressed his admiration for Mainoo’s remarkable maturity at such a young age.

He likened the midfielder’s style to that of a young Bastian Schweinsteiger, emphasizing Mainoo’s knack for making the right decisions on the field.

“I think he’s incredible for such a young age, with the maturity he’s shown,” Rooney told TNT Sports. When you see any young players come into the first team they’re normally a bit raw or play off the cuff.

“He reminds me of a young Bastian Schweinsteiger with how he plays, and he always seems to make the right decisions. He has a very bright future,” he added.

Meanwhile, amidst growing interest from England, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has initiated efforts to secure Mainoo’s commitment to play for the Black Stars, recognizing his immense potential despite his involvement with England’s youth teams.

Manchester United in talks to renew Kobbie Mainoo’s contract https://www.adomonline.com/manchester-united-in-talks-to-renew-kobbie-mainoos-contract/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 10:15:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2366045 Manchester United are in talks with Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract to reflect his first-team status, according to a report.

The 18-year-old has nailed down a role as a key player under Erik ten Hag this season, showing the maturity and composure of a player twice his age.

Mainoo most recently signed a fresh deal at Old Trafford in February 2023 running until 2027, but the Manchester Evening News reports initial discussions have taken place over an improved contract following his fine 2023/24 season so far.

Both United and the player’s camp are said to be not panicked over the situation as Mainoo would prefer to focus on the end to the campaign on the pitch and he has already triggered several performance-related add-ons and bonuses in his current contract. Talks are expected to accelerate over the summer.

The MEN’s report adds that Mainoo enjoys playing alongside veteran defensive midfielder Casemiro as this allows him to take up positions in more advanced areas.

Mainoo, who has made 18 senior appearances for United this term, recently praised under-fire manager Erik ten Hag for giving him the opportunity to make the step up from the youth-team setup.

“I am grateful that he has given me an opportunity to play for this club,” Mainoo said. “Also, what I appreciate is that he pushes you every day. He keeps pushing you and wants more and more and more from his players. I think that really helps you to develop quicker.”

Mainoo has been tipped to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England side for Euro 2024 and could be named in their squad for the upcoming March internationals against Belgium and Brazil. However, he is also eligible to represent Ghana, who have made no secret of their desire to bring him into their senior setup.

Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana FA, said in February: “The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams.

“Kobbie is definitely one of these incredible talents, and the association would love to work with him and many like him at home and abroad.”

Arsenal legend backs Kobbie Mainoo to make England’s senior squad https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-legend-backs-kobbie-mainoo-to-make-englands-senior-squad/ Mon, 19 Feb 2024 09:56:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2358156 Arsenal legend, Ian Wright has called for the inclusion of Kobbie Mainoo into England’s squad for the upcoming international break, citing the young midfielder’s maturity and composed playing style as standout qualities.

Mainoo, an 18-year-old Manchester United player has been a revelation in the ongoing 2023/24 Premier League season, boasting a tally of 14 appearances and one goal.

Following Mainoo’s noteworthy performance in United’s hard-fought 2-1 win against Luton on Sunday night, Wright, a renowned figure in Premier League history, voiced his support for the midfielder’s inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Wright believes Mainoo’s ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations demonstrates his readiness for the international stage.

As Southgate prepares to announce his next set of call-ups in the upcoming weeks, with friendlies against Brazil and Belgium on the horizon at Wembley next month, there is a growing buzz around Mainoo potentially making the cut.

Having previously played for various England youth teams, Mainoo is poised to make the leap to the senior squad with aspirations of competing in Euro 2024.

However, Mainoo’s international future is not solely tethered to England.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reportedly expressed interest in recruiting the promising talent, given that both of his parents are of Ghanaian descent, which makes him eligible to represent the Black Stars.

Randy Abbey, an Executive Council member of the GFA, mentioned in an interview with the Times that the Association is closely monitoring Mainoo’s progress and is keen on having him play for Ghana.

FIFA’s international eligibility rules allow Mainoo to switch allegiances since he has only represented England at junior levels.

However, should Mainoo make four competitive senior appearances for England in 2024, his eligibility to play for Ghana would be permanently forfeited.

England set to fast-track Man Utd’s Kobbie Mainoo amid Ghana interest https://www.adomonline.com/england-set-to-fast-track-man-utds-kobbie-mainoo-amid-ghana-interest/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 11:16:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2356083 Gareth Southgate is considering fast-tracking young Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo through the England ranks as interest in the teenager intensifies from Ghana, sources have told ESPN.

The 18-year-old has emerged as a hugely promising midfielder under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and started his 10th consecutive match across all competitions on Sunday as United beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park.

Mainoo has represented England at under-17s, U18s and U19s level but is eligible to switch his allegiance to Ghana, where his parents were born.

The youngster still spends some of his spare time back in Ghana and the country’s football association confirmed earlier this month they were keen on convincing Mainoo to represent them at the international level.

However, sources have told ESPN that Southgate believes Mainoo has significant potential and is keen to accelerate his progress with England.

Southgate will name his senior squad on March 14 and there is a chance Mainoo could be included should he continue his superb form for United, although it is equally likely at this stage that he could skip the U20s and move into England’s U21s squad.

Mainoo’s involvement will be one key topic of conversation between Southgate and U21s boss Lee Carsley in the weeks ahead.

Sources suggest England are confident Mainoo wants to represent them and there is a desire to integrate him into the setup but he will only become ineligible for Ghana when he plays a competitive senior international and this year’s fixture list has complicated the situation.

England have four games before this summer’s European Championship but they are all friendlies, starting with home matches at Wembley against Brazil and Belgium next month.

One solution would be for Southgate to select Mainoo at Euro 2024 but that would be a huge call given he has only made 17 appearances at first-team level.

Southgate is also only able to name a 23-man squad — reduced from the 26-man groups used at the previous World Cup and Euros, originally increased due to COVID-19 concerns — which means less room for experimentation and a possible wait until the autumn for Mainoo to play competitively.

At present, Southgate favours Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher among others in the midfield positions. Trent Alexander-Arnold was also listed as a midfielder in England’s previous squad for games against North Macedonia and Malta.

Meanwhile, a source has told ESPN that Southgate is also considering recalling goalkeeper Jack Butland after reviving his career at Scottish side Rangers following a free transfer from Crystal Palace last summer.

Ghana trying to convince Man Utd’s Kobbie Mainoo to switch allegiance https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-trying-to-convince-man-utds-kobbie-mainoo-to-switch-allegiance/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 16:37:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2351079 The Ghana FA is trying to persuade Kobbie Mainoo to ditch England and represent the African nation instead.

Mainoo’s breakthrough season hit new heights on Thursday when he scored a stunning stoppage-time winner in Manchester United’s 4-3 victory away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 18-year-old midfielder, described as a “generational talent” by his team-mate Rasmus Hojlund, also scored four days earlier in the 4-2 win over Newport County and has played 15 times for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Mainoo’s progression has not gone unnoticed in Ghana, the homeland of his parents, where Mainoo regularly visits during his time off. The midfielder has represented England at three different age groups, but the Ghana FA still thinks it has a chance of persuading him to play for them.

“The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of Ghana FA, told The Times. “Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad.”

Ghana need a talisman after what Abbey described as a “disastrous” Africa Cup of Nations campaign in which they failed to qualify from their group.

Mainoo’s 97th-minute winner at Molineux came after he slipped the ball between Max Kilman’s legs and curled the ball into the far corner. The midfielder described it as a “dream” scenario for him given that he has been at the club since the age of eight. “To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing,” Mainoo said. “Now [I am] just trying to get a good run of games in, win more games and get real momentum going.”

Hojlund has grown close to Mainoo since the striker arrived from Atalanta last summer.

“We enjoy spending time outside [the pitch] together,” the 20-year-old Dane said. “Us young guys, we have a little group and we’re chatting to each other and it’s very cool to have other young players around the team and hopefully we can set an era for the club and be here many years together.

“Kobbie is so relaxed on the ball. Now he’s also starting to show that he has the scoring parts of his game as well. He’s a complete player.”

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has admitted that he will have to be “creative” with his team selection in the final stages of the season after the board were unable to sign the striker that he wanted.

Ten Hag said it was “no secret” that he wanted to buy a forward in the January transfer window, but he was told that United would risk breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

It has left Ten Hag with just five senior players — Marcus Rashford, Antony, Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial — to fill three forward positions and Martial is out for the next ten weeks with a groin injury.

“I wanted a striker,” Ten Hag said. “With the injury to Martial we don’t really have the back-up. But it wasn’t possible because we have to match the FFP rules. We have Omari [Forson], we have Amad Diallo. Of course we have Rashford who can play there. But I think for the rest, all the positions are occupied. We have to be a little bit creative, it’s up to the No 9 position.”

Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof are expected to return for Sunday’s home match against West Ham United.

Long-term absentees Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Mason Mount (calf) are out and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (leg) is also a doubt.

Mount, a £60 million summer signing from Chelsea, has not played for the past three months but Ten Hag insists that he will feature for his team again this term.

“It is very frustrating for him and I really feel for him,” Ten Hag said of the 25-year-old England international.

“I am sure he is a very good player for us. But, first of all, what’s now important is we have to do it very secure to get him fit, secure in the process, step by step, don’t force it and then hopefully by the end of the season he can stay fit and fight his way into the team, or at least play a role in his team.”

‘A dream come true’ – the making of Man Utd match-winner Kobbie Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/a-dream-come-true-the-making-of-man-utd-match-winner-kobbie-mainoo/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 03:55:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2350725 His first Premier League goal was a 97th-minute winner for his childhood club to seal a 4-3 victory. No wonder Kobbie Mainoo was grinning ear to ear.

“It is a dream come true,” the 18-year-old Manchester United midfielder told TNT Sports, following his winner in a Premier League classic against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

“I have still not come down from it. I still feel like I am dreaming to be honest.

“To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing. Now it’s about trying to win more games.”

This was Mainoo’s 11th senior appearance for United, with his previous games seeing him being quietly impressive in central midfield.

But this was something else entirely. This was a young man dragging his stricken comrades from the floor with a spark of individual brilliance to grab a win which United seemed to have thrown away.

Seconds after Pedro Neto had equalised for the hosts, Mainoo picked the ball up 35 yards from goal. He beat one defender, nutmegged Wolves captain Max Kilman, cut on to his right foot and curled a beautiful low finish past Jose Sa.

Mainoo is the latest teenage star to come through the United ranks and burst on to the Premier League stage.

Four of the last five 90th-minute winning goals in the Premier League by players aged 18 or younger have been for United: Federico Macheda in 2009, Marcus Rashford in 2016, Alejandro Garnacho in 2022 and now Mainoo.

Mainoo’s status already at United is the academy lad come good. It is a mantle he has inherited from Rashford, who looked like being the main event after scoring five minutes into his return from misadventures in Belfast, only for the number 37 to steal the headlines.

It is perhaps damning that United were reliant on a teenager to dig them out of trouble in a game they were leading 2-0 at half-time and 3-1 in the 85th minute, and should have won comfortably.

But in Mainoo, they seem to have a midfield talent who is here to stay.

“One minute I’m on the floor and then Kobbie Mainoo produces a moment that we have seen in the academy before,” former United defender Rio Ferdinand said on TNT Sports.

A dream come true, and perhaps for Mainoo, the dream has just begun.

Kobbie Mainoo scores sensational winner as Man Utd beat Wolves in seven-goal thriller https://www.adomonline.com/kobbie-mainoo-scores-sensational-winner-as-man-utd-beat-wolves-in-seven-goal-thriller/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 03:34:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2350709 Kobbie Mainoo scored a 97th-minute winner as Manchester United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-3 at Molineux in a Premier League classic.

Mainoo curled his first Premier League goal past Jose Sa, just seconds after Pedro Neto appeared to have snatched a point for Wolves.

Wolves pulled themselves level having been 2-0 down at half-time and 3-1 behind on 85 minutes, but United took the three points thanks to 18-year-old Mainoo, who picked the ball up on the left, nutmegged Max Kilman and cut inside before bending the ball into the bottom corner.

Marcus Rashford had opened the scoring five minutes into his United return, having been absent from the FA Cup fourth round with illness amid reports he had missed training following a night out in Belfast before Rasmus Hojlund doubled the lead.

Pablo Sarabia pulled one back from the penalty spot, before Scott McTominay seemingly made it safe for the visitors by heading in a corner with 15 minutes left shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute.

But that was only the start of the late chaos.
Wolves captain Kilman ensured a grandstand finish by scoring from close range following a corner.

Then, in the sixth of nine added minutes, Neto struck home past the wrong-footed Andre Onana as United were caught on the break.

Wolves celebrated wildly – but it proved premature as Mainoo had the final word in a remarkable game.

Erik ten Hag’s side move back into the top seven after ending a run of four away league matches without winning and are now eight points off the Champions League places, while Wolves stay 11th.

Jamal Musiala’s advice to Man Utd talent Kobbie Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/jamal-musialas-advice-to-man-utd-talent-kobbie-mainoo/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 16:13:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2331317 Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala has told Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to stay “confident” in himself as the teenager continues his rise to prominence.

United fans were hoping for big things from Mainoo in 2023/24 after impressing in the early stages of pre-season. But an injury in a friendly against Real Madrid set him back.

Mainoo’s first appearance of the season was delayed until the recent win over Everton, during which the 18-year-old was widely praised for both the quality of his performance and a maturity to his game that belied his age and lack of senior experience.

“I haven’t heard much about him but if he is in the Manchester United squad, he must have lots of quality,” said Musiala ahead of Bayern’s visit to Old Trafford this week.

“I think for a young player, it is about just having that confidence in yourself. Especially when you are playing with older people and people who have a bit more experience that you get that trust that you are meant to be where you are right now.”

Musiala himself is only 20 but has already played 140 first-team games for Bayern, as well as 25 for Germany. If anyone knows what it’s like to be in Mainoo’s shoes right now, he does.

Since starting against Everton, Mainoo has further featured for United against Galatasaray and Newcastle but remained an unused substitute for more recent games with Chelsea and Bournemouth. Given the impressive nature of his display against Everton, one of the team’s few polished performances this season, many fans would hope to see him start against Bayern.

United can only progress to the Champions League knockout stages by beating Bayern, who haven’t lost a game at this stage of the competition since 2017, and hoping for a draw in the group’s other game between Copenhagen and Galatasaray. United will go out of Europe completely if they lose.

A reprieve in the Europa League, a competition that United previously won in 2017, is also possible – with a win if Copenhagen beat Galatasaray, or a draw if the opposite happens.

English FA counting on Kobbie Mainoo to snub Ghana for Three Lions https://www.adomonline.com/english-fa-counting-on-kobbie-mainoo-to-snub-ghana-for-three-lions/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 07:50:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2325027 England Manager, Gareth Southgate is confident Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo will snub Ghana and represent the Three Lions.

Mainoo has represented England at U17, U18 and U19 levels, but is still eligible for Ghana through his parents.

However, a report by the Daily Star reveals that Southgate is desperate to see him pledge his international future to the Three Lions instead.

The England boss is expected to hold talks with the midfielder in the hope of persuading him to stick with the country of his birth.

Mainoo could even be fast-tracked into Lee Carsley’s England U21 squad to speed up the process.

Mainoo dominated the headlines following his outstanding performance in Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday in the Premier League.

It was his competitive debut in the Premier League and former Red Devil players and pundits queued up to praise his maturity, in what was a white-hot atmosphere at Goodison Park.

Mainoo, 18, who joined United as a kid helped United win the FA Youth Cup in 2022 and was rewarded with his first professional contract earlier this year, worth around £10,000 a week.

He made his competitive debut in January when he started in a 3-0 EFL Cup win over Charlton and since then Southgate has been keeping close tabs on Mainoo’s progress and is aware the teenage sensation could still decide to choose the Black Stars.

He is a good player – Erik ten Hag lauds Kobbie Mainoo after win at Everton https://www.adomonline.com/he-is-a-player-erik-ten-hag-lauds-kobbie-mainoo-after-win-at-everton/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 09:43:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2324406 Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag has praised youngster, Kobbie Mainoo after his impressive debut performance in the game against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

The 18-year-old UK-born of Ghanaian descent returned to the United’s squad for the first time after recovering from an injury he suffered during pre-season.

Stepping up to the big occasion, Mainoo put in a good shift and helped the Red Devils to secure a deserved 3-0 win at Goodison Park.

Speaking in his post-match interview, manager Erik ten Hag said it’s really good to have Kobbie Mainoo back.

He said the teenager is a very good player and a mature one.

“We have to develop players. Kids have to deserve it. It was painful for us when he got a bad injury in pre-season but now he’s back. He’s a good boy, very mature. He showed it today. I like him,” the Manchester United boss said.

Kobbie Mainoo looks set to play in more games for Manchester United as the season progresses.

He will hope to keep his impressive performance going when Manchester United travel to face Galatasaray S.K. on Wednesday at the RAMS Park in the Champions League.

Manchester City plotting to sign Man United teenager Kobbie Mainoo https://www.adomonline.com/manchester-city-plotting-to-sign-man-united-teenager-kobbie-mainoo/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 11:33:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2314451 Manchester City are set to make an audacious raid on rivals Manchester United for teenager Kobbie Mainoo, according to reports.

Mainoo is one of the most highly-rated stars in the English game and he received huge plaudits in midweek after a dazzling display for the club’s Under-21 side that saw him grab two assists.

The 18-year-old also impressed during pre-season and was named man of the match in a friendly match against Arsenal before being hit with an injury setback.

Now the midfielder is looking back to his best after recovering and City are now ready to make their move despite the rivalry between the two clubs, according to Four Four Two.

There is no indication whether United would even entertain a bid from one of their fiercest rivals, the report adds, and said there was no telling how much City would be willing to spend to lure him.

But it added that Pep Guardiola’s outfit had a commitment to developing young, talented stars – while United were suffering financial restrictions over financial fair play.

The Stockport starlet made his senior debut against Charlton in the Carabao Cup last season and won the FA Youth Cup with the academy.

He later played his first-ever game in the Premier League by coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 win against Leicester City.

Should City manage to complete a shock move for Mainoo, it would add to United’s woes after a turbulent season that has seen them lose five of their first ten Premier League games – including back-to-back 3-0 home losses against City and Newcastle.

However, in his recent press conference ahead of United’s trip to Fulham, Ten Hag cut an optimistic figure despite the rising pressure on his shoulders.

‘They (players) are positive,’ he said. ‘They want to put this right and we know the standards here. We have to match them every day, we’ve had two big setbacks, but we’ll fight back.

‘The dressing room is strong, the staff are strong and this manager is strong.’

He also stressed that his players were ‘hard to beat’ – despite their recent record providing evidence to the contrary.

‘I’m convinced in the long-term, they will be hard to beat, and they know how to do it,’ Ten Hag added.
