Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the musician explained that although he sometimes worries about the chaos that follows, the act serves as a reminder of his humble beginnings.

According to him, the gesture is not meant to flaunt his wealth but reflects the struggles he witnessed growing up in several communities in Accra.

Shatta Wale said he worked hard for his success, taking years to build his wealth, and added that many people often do not believe his story of how he saved and struggled along the way.

He also disclosed that beyond publicly giving money, he quietly supports many people by sponsoring them to start businesses and assisting others in need.

The artiste noted that he does not always publicize such acts because he believes God sees what he does and prefers not to seek praise for his generosity.

“Sometimes I worry about the chaos that ensues when I throw money, but it reminds me of where I come from and the places I grew up in. I always pray over the money before I throw it. I worked hard for it; it took me years to build my wealth. When I tell people how I saved, some of them don’t believe me. My act of throwing money isn’t about showing off; it’s a reflection of the pain I feel every day when I drive through the streets of Accra.

“I often choose not to talk about the things I do for others. I sponsor people to start businesses and more. I know that God sees what I am doing, and I don’t want it to be something I do for glory. I understand what hard work truly means, which is why I give back. However, I can’t reach out to everyone in need. When I feel the right energy, I just want to help,” he stated.

Benfica suspend five fans over racist incidents https://www.adomonline.com/benfica-suspend-five-fans-over-racist-incidents/ Sat, 28 Feb 2026 09:09:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636100 Benfica say they have suspended five supporters for behaviour “of a racist nature” during the first leg of their Champions League knockout play-off against Real Madrid this month.

Play in Lisbon was suspended for 10 minutes after Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr told the referee that he had been racially abused by Benfica’s Argentine winger Gianluca Prestianni, who denies the claims.

“Benfica informed that it has suspended the memberships of five members following the initiation of disciplinary proceedings that led to the application of the maximum sanction stipulated in club’s statutes, which is expulsion,” the Portuguese club said in a statement.

“An internal investigation initiated after the match between Benfica and Real Madrid, held on 17 February, and the adoption of inappropriate behaviour in the stands, of a racist nature, incompatible with the values and principles that govern the club.

“Benfica reaffirms that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act firmly when behaviours undermine the values of the club.”

Vinicius had put the visitors ahead in the game but was booked for an excessive celebration in front of Benfica supporters.

Television footage showed some fans appearing to make racist gestures aimed at the player.

After an exchange with Prestianni he ran over to the referee, gesturing in the direction of the Argentina player before walking off the pitch, followed by his team-mates.

When play resumed, an object was thrown from the crowd that struck Vinicius on the arm as he prepared to take a corner.

Speaking after the game, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho said Vinicius had acted disrespectfully and incited the crowd.

Those comments were criticised by former Real midfielder Clarence Seedorf among others.

Prestianni was handed a provisional one-match ban by Uefa and missed Wednesday’s return leg, which Real won 2-1 to go through 3-1 on aggregate.

Vinicius, who scored again at the Bernabeu, was booed by the away supporters.

On Thursday, Benfica issued a statement denying a claim that Prestianni had told the squad or club officials that he had uttered a racist insult to Vinicius.

18 Senegalese detainees from AFCON final in Morocco go on hunger strike https://www.adomonline.com/18-senegalese-detainees-from-afcon-final-in-morocco-go-on-hunger-strike/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 04:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2628928 Eighteen Senegalese football fans detained in Morocco over “hooliganism” during last month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final have begun a hunger strike pending their trial.

Lawyer Patrick Kabou said his clients told him they have been “waiting to learn the charges against them since January 18”, the day they were arrested after a heated AFCON final in which Senegal beat Morocco in Rabat.

Kabou, speaking to the news agency AFP, said the group complained that police officers had questioned them in French and Arabic, whereas they “only speak Wolof”, their native language.

Minutes before the end of last month’s match, some Senegalese supporters attempted to storm the pitch while Senegal’s players halted the game for nearly 20 minutes to protest against a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

Some fans were also seen throwing objects onto the field, including a chair.

The group said they were being denied their “right to justice” and pledged to continue the strike “until Moroccan justice gives us the chance to be heard”, Kabou added.

A first court hearing in late January had been adjourned by the judge, and the second hearing on Thursday was also put off amid an ongoing lawyers’ strike in Morocco.

The trial is set to resume next week.

2026 WCQ: No budget for fans or media – Kofi Adams https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-no-budget-for-fans-or-media-kofi-adams/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 11:13:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574410

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will not provide funding for fans or media coverage for Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed.

The Black Stars are currently in N’Djamena ahead of their Matchday 7 clash against Chad at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno on Thursday, September 4, before returning to Accra to host Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the press on Tuesday, September 2, Adams explained that the ministry had reviewed the proposed budgets for the two fixtures and removed certain items. The $1.3 million approved for the matches does not include any allocation for supporters.

“We don’t have a budget for supporters, and this is because of the Dzemefe Commission’s recommendations. It was recommended that government must not use state funds to fly fans or the media for any tournament.”

He added that government funds should not be used to transport fans or media representatives.

“Fans were in Morocco for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament, but went there on their own. We believe that media houses must be capable of sending their reporters to cover every tournament if they want to. Anyone who comes thinking there is a budget [for fans], not a pesewa is in the budget for supporters. No provision for supporters and no provision for the media,” Adams stressed.

Meanwhile, head coach Otto Addo and his squad are scheduled to hold a final training session on Wednesday ahead of their trip to Chad.

Ghana, a four-time World Cup participant, currently leads Group I with 15 points, three ahead of Comoros, who face Mali on Matchday 7.

Hearts of Oak fans clash with MD, demand his immediate resignation [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-fans-clash-with-md-demand-his-immediate-resignation-video/ Sat, 10 May 2025 17:57:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2533745 Fans of Hearts of Oak have staged a protest against the club’s Managing Director, Delali Anku-Adiamah, calling for his immediate resignation.

On Friday, a group of passionate supporters gathered outside the club’s commercial office in Accra, blocking Mr. Anku-Adiamah from entering his office.

The fans expressed their frustration, accusing the MD of incompetence and failure to deliver the promised transformation of the club’s fortunes.

They further criticised Anku-Adiamah for allegedly allowing Alhaji Akambi and Vincent Sowah Odotei to run the club’s operations without his involvement in decision-making.

The protestors carried placards that made their dissatisfaction clear, with messages highlighting their concerns over the club’s management.

“Stay out of the club. We are tired of you. As an MD, you don’t take care of the team well. When you were coming, you told us you would bring sponsors within three months, and since you have been here, everything is disorganised,” the leader of the fans said.

“The team is bigger than you, leave the team and go…”

Hearts of Oak have struggled throughout the current season, currently sitting 6th in the league with 46 points as they approach the final four matches. Next week, they will face Berekum Chelsea in Matchday 31.

Fan dies during Ghana vs Chad World Cup qualifier at Accra Sports Stadium https://www.adomonline.com/fan-dies-during-ghana-vs-chad-world-cup-qualifier-at-accra-sports-stadium/ Wed, 07 May 2025 08:58:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532370 A Ghanaian football supporter tragically lost their life during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad, held in March at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars ended a six-game winless streak with an emphatic 5-0 victory over the Chadians during the Matchday Five fixture of the qualifiers.

An eyewitness named Rita, who also sustained serious injuries, recounted the harrowing experience in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, May 7.

According to her, a stampede occurred as fans attempted to force their way into the stadium, resulting in chaos and violent confrontations. “People were pushing from behind, and those at the front had nowhere to go,” she said. “That’s when everything went wrong.”

Rita alleged that some security personnel responded with force, beating several individuals severely.

She also revealed that her brother, Lawrence—who had travelled from Germany to visit family—was caught in the stampede and suffered a serious injury.

He was initially treated at Ridge Hospital in Accra, but due to the severity of his condition, he was flown back to Germany for emergency surgery.

“The doctors said it was urgent, so we had no choice but to send him back. Thankfully, the surgery went well, and he’s recovering now,” she added.

In response to the tragic incident, Charles Amofa, Communications Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has urged all fans who sustained injuries during the match to contact the NSA for support. “We take this matter seriously and encourage affected individuals to reach out to us,” he stated.

Africa’s Liverpool fans ready to paint the continent Red as title glory beckons https://www.adomonline.com/africas-liverpool-fans-ready-to-paint-the-continent-red-as-title-glory-beckons/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 06:00:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528625 They may be separated by thousands of kilometres from the hallowed turf of Anfield, but the passion of Liverpool FC supporters in Africa burns just as bright.

With the Reds on the cusp of clinching their historic 20th Premier League title – a feat that would see them equal Manchester United’s record – fans across the continent are already in celebratory mode, ready to erupt should their team secure a point against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

“It’s a great time to be a Liverpool fan, and I am personally looking forward to celebrating a much deserved and maybe, some say, unexpected title win,” says Liam Lockhart, Chairman of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club (OLSC) in Gauteng, South Africa.

“I think like many Liverpool fans, I was not sure what to expect coming into this season with Jürgen Klopp leaving, but to kick on and continue has been nothing short of amazing from Arne Slot and Liverpool FC as a whole. “We have a total of over 100 signed-up members now, and there’s a lot of excitement within the club as we all look forward to seeing the Premier League trophy in our hands again.”

The anticipation is palpable, with supporters already making plans to mark this momentous occasion in true Liverpudlian style.

Neil Ruiters, Chairperson of the OLSC in Cape Town, South Africa, echoes this sentiment.

“I’m incredibly excited! The prospect of seeing Liverpool clinch their 20th league title and go level with Manchester United is not just historic — it’s emotional,” says Ruiters. “It would be a beautiful reward for a team that has shown grit, unity, and belief this season. The energy among the Cape Town Reds is electric! Every matchday feels like a final. There’s a sense of shared anticipation — we’re not just watching a football team; we’re part of something far greater.”

The Cape Town branch is already gearing up for a significant celebration. “We’ve already started laying the groundwork for a celebration. Should we secure the title, we’ll be hosting a Red Bash — a party with live screenings, music, LFC-themed décor, prizes, and of course, that famous Scouse spirit. Think of it as Cape Town’s Anfield for a day!” Ruiters enthusiastically shares.

Adding a crucial message for fans, he says, “If you’re not at Anfield, or at a supporters club, or can’t even make it to a TV screen on the day to watch Liverpool’s title celebrations, there’s always options like Showmax Premier League, so no matter where you are or what you are doing on the day, it’s something you simply cannot miss.”

In Gauteng, similar plans are underway.

“We are planning to have a musician come out and play some of the songs made so famous from Liverpool FC for the Spurs game on the 27th of April, which is hopefully the day we clinch the league title, and then we will also arrange with Ridgeway Racebar for a similar type of atmosphere for the final day against Crystal Palace,” reveals Lockhart.

Reflecting on the season, he adds, “Having been so close for so many years, I am never really comfortable until it’s mathematically certain. My personal highlight, and when I thought we had done enough, was the win over Manchester City at home.”

In Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, similar plans are underway to celebrate Liverpool’s title success.

The Liverpool Supporters Club in Nigeria says they have begun planning, for what they have labelled as a “massive occasion.”

“We are planning a parade in Abuja when Liverpool lift the trophy. We are all very excited about celebrating this momentous occasion,” says Davies Adewale, chairman of the Liverpool Supporters Club in Nigeria.

“Anfield may be thousands of miles away from us, but it’s home for us and always will be,” adds Adewale.

Despite the distance, the connection between Liverpool FC and its African fanbase remains incredibly strong.

“I think football has that effect on everyone who comes to love the game as we all do here at OLSC Gauteng, it infects our lives and can even make or break our weeks. We may be much further away than the people of Liverpool, but we feel the emotion of the game just as strong as them,” explains Lockhart.

Ruiters adds, “It’s the ethos of the club. Liverpool stands for passion, resilience, and community. You’ll Never Walk Alone is more than just a song — it’s a way of life. That spirit speaks to fans across borders, languages, and cultures. LFC has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s more than football — it’s family, hope, belief. In the highs and the lows, the club has always represented unity and fighting spirit. It’s deeply personal.”

Lockhart, Ruiters and Adewale all agree that celebrating such a significant milestone is crucial.

“I think Liverpool fans know better than most that these days don’t come along every year and that we must savour every moment,” says Lockhart.

Ruiters agrees.

“Because football is about memories. Titles come and go, but the way a season makes you feel — that lasts forever. Celebrating together builds community and honours the emotional investment fans have made week in, week out.”

With the potential for title celebrations just days away, Liverpool supporters in South Africa are united in their anticipation and ready to paint their corners of the country red in honour of their beloved club.

Man Utd fans ‘disappointed’ by season ticket price increase https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-fans-disappointed-by-season-ticket-price-increase/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 02:01:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515814 Manchester United season ticket prices will increase by about 5% for the third successive year as the club aims to become financially sustainable.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) says the increase is “less than many feared”, and there has been a price freeze for under-16s.

But MUST says United fans have “expressed their disappointment” that the club has “ignored” the call for a widespread price freeze.

Since becoming the club’s co-owner last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos group have tried improve the club’s finances but several changes have been unpopular, resulting in fan protests, in particular at last week’s home game with Arsenal.

Some of the latest changes for the 2025-26 season include the introduction of a game categorisation model for non-season ticket holders, where premium games cost more.

United are also increasing the minimum usage requirement for season ticket holders from 15 to 16 of their 19 Premier League home games.

United’s chief executive Omar Berrada says the club “worked hard to come up with a pricing package that is fair and reasonable” and that the new changes are being made “to offset continued rises in operating costs”.

However, MUST says that “we fail to see any justification for the increase” and that the new categorisation model is “a source of major concern”.

A MUST statement read: “For several months we have argued long and hard that the club need to look at the big picture and freeze ticket prices for next season.

“Other clubs have done that already and at United it would have sent a powerful message about the need for everyone to pull together to get the club out of the very difficult position it finds itself in.”

Berrada said: “We understand that any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of under-performance on the pitch, and we listened carefully to the strong arguments put forward by the FAB (Fan Advisory Board) in favour of a freeze.

“However, the club has decided it would not be right to keep prices unchanged while costs rise and the club continues to face financial issues.

“We have kept the increase to the lowest possible level and protected our youngest season ticket holders from any rises, while ensuring the club remains financially strong enough to invest in improving the team.”

Cost-cutting measures continue under Ineos

After freezing season ticket prices for 11 years, United are now increasing them for a third straight year.

This comes after a second round of redundancies at the club was announced last month, and there was a mid-season rise in some ticket prices to £66, with no concessions. Other cost-cutting measures including the removal of free lunches for staff.

Ratcliffe has said the decisions are necessary in order to slash losses, which last year exceeded £113m, and last week he told the BBC Sport “the club runs out of money at Christmas if we don’t do those things”.

The latest season ticket changes represent an average increase of £2.50 per game.

Ratcliffe told the BBC: “Well, I don’t get involved in the detail of ticket pricing. That’s for the management of the club, not for me really.

“My sort of general principles on ticket pricing are that it should be fair, affordable for the people in Manchester.

“We do need to look after the under-16s and the older people who do not have as much money, but at the same time ticket income is part of the overall income of the club.

“The club receives income from ticketing, from merchandising and from TV. They are all major components of how much money we have to spend on new players and the squad.”

What other changes will Man Utd make?

The introduction of a game categorisation model, plus the increase in season ticket prices and the minimum usage requirement are just some of the latest changes:

  • United’s ‘senior’ discount will now track the state pension age of 66, giving older fans 25% off. Some had previously received a 50% discount.
  • Fans behind the dugouts will be relocated, allowing the club to convert those seats for hospitality and sell them at premium prices
  • Fans who sell their ticket back to the club less than 14 days before a game will be charged £10
  • Car parking charges will rise by 15%

We have to stay united – Aboubakar Ouattara urges Hearts of Oak fans after poor start https://www.adomonline.com/we-have-to-stay-united-aboubakar-ouattara-urges-hearts-of-oak-fans-after-poor-start/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 13:37:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2451537 Hearts of Oak coach, Aboubakar Ouattara has implored the fans of the club to stay united following their challenging start to the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

The Phobians sit bottom of the league log with no points after two games played having suffered a 1-0 defeat against Basake Holy Stars on the opening day, followed by a 2-1 loss to Heart of Lions on matchday two.

Ahead of their crucial matchday three fixture against Bechem United, the Ivorian tactician has appealed to the fans to stay united and support, emphasizing that success can only be achieved if everyone works towards the same goal.

“We are preparing. We’ve played two matches, and we didn’t get a chance to win, but we are thinking about it,” Ouattara said in an interview on Hearts TV.

“I know our fans are disappointed, but we have a long way to go. We need to be together and aim for the same goal to succeed,” he added.

Hearts of Oak host the Hunters at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 22 with kick-off scheduled at 18:00GMT.

Arsenal ban 24 fans for abuse during last season https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-ban-24-fans-for-abuse-during-last-season/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 09:52:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2433661 Arsenal have banned 24 supporters for abusive and discriminatory behaviour – including racism and assault – at Emirates Stadium and online last season.

Fourteen fans have been handed three-year bans from home and away games by the Premier League club, while the other 10 are banned for one year.

Most of the incidents occurred at the north London club’s Emirates Stadium, while three fans were found to have been abusive online.

Arsenal’s managing director Richard Garlick says the club will continue to take a hard-line approach on abuse and discrimination.

Listed offences

Inside Emirates Stadium:

  • Assault – 10
  • Tragedy chanting – 5
  • Offensive gestures – 2
  • Racism – 2
  • Homophobia – 1
  • Sexual assault – 1

Online:

  • Racism – 1
  • Antisemitism – 1
  • Sending abusive messages – 1

“Abuse and discrimination will not be tolerated. We will continue to take strong action alongside our partners such as the Met Police against this abhorrent behaviour,” said Garlick.

“We know it’s a small minority, but that won’t stop us from taking action against abusers who are identified as Arsenal season ticket holders or members, and escalating to the police where appropriate.

“Our aim is to create an environment at Arsenal where everybody feels welcome. We hope continued action serves as a deterrent for those using abusive, threatening, and discriminatory language.”

The club added that “education” is key to tackling the issue.

Six England fans get banning orders at Euro 2024 https://www.adomonline.com/six-england-fans-get-banning-orders-at-euro-2024/ Sat, 29 Jun 2024 07:07:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2415242 Six England fans have been issued with football banning orders following disorder in the build-up to the Euro 2024 match against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on 16 June.

Officers from the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) have been working with German authorities during the competition.

Fans issued with the orders will be unable to attend domestic matches and England internationals for the duration of their ban.

Head of the UKFPU, Mick Johnson, hailed the “swift action” and said it shows there are “consequences” for those who are intent on causing disorder in the UK or overseas.

“We are continuing to work closely with our policing colleagues in Germany and have a team of UK officers deployed overseas supporting their operation to deliver a safe tournament,” Johnson said.

“We want fans who are travelling to have a good time, but please remember to drink responsibly, respect the local culture and don’t get involved in disorder.”

Todd Hines, 21, Liam Jackson, 28 and Kyran Alcock, 28, have been handed three-year football banning orders, while Lewis Dodsworth, 29, Jack Hatton, 27, and Gary McIvor38, have been issued five-year football banning orders.

A further four fans have already attended court in the UK and were bailed with conditions to surrender their passports.

The UKFPU is continuing to investigate a number of other fans who were suspected of being involved in the disorder prior to England’s 1-1 draw against Serbia.

“It is important to stress that the vast majority of England fans in Germany are behaving extremely well, and those involved in any disorder are very much a tiny minority. This has been the case at all of England’s fixtures so far,” Johnson said.

Angry Kotoko fans storm Adako Jachie to prevent team from training https://www.adomonline.com/angry-kotoko-fans-storm-adako-jachie-to-prevent-team-from-training/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 10:49:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2382092 Angry Asante Kotoko fans stormed the Adako Jachie training grounds on Tuesday to prevent the team from holding their mandatory training session.

The fans demanded the sacking of coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum and his technical team due to the poor performance of the team in the ongoing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

Players and some members of the technical team were prevented from having their regular training sessions.

The Porcupine Warriors have slipped to the 11th position on the Ghana Premier League table after recording seven defeats in nine games.

The team’s recent performances have seen them surrender their position in the top half of the table, with rivals Hearts of Oak surpassing them.

The fans voiced their dissatisfaction as they called for the dismissal of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum and his technical staff from the club, citing the team’s poor performance as justification for their demand.

Despite attempts by the IMC’s president, Nana Appiah Apinkra, to calm the irate fans, they remained steadfast in their stance, requesting that the coaching staff leave before the situation deteriorated further.

Meanwhile, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will meet the Interim Management Committee (IMC) on Thursday to address the issues around the club.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko will hope to return to winning ways when they host league leaders, FC Samartex in the matchday 27 games at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Lionel Messi: Fans angered as World Cup winner fails to play in Hong Kong https://www.adomonline.com/lionel-messi-fans-angered-as-world-cup-winner-fails-to-play-in-hong-kong/ Sun, 04 Feb 2024 18:53:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2351447 Angry fans in Hong Kong booed Inter Miami during a pre-season friendly after Lionel Messi did not play.

The Argentina World Cup winner, 36, who had a hamstring injury, was left on the bench as Inter beat a local League XI 4-1 in front of almost 40,000 fans.

There were chants of “refund”, while a speech by Inter co-owner David Beckham was drowned out by booing.

The Hong Kong government said match organisers Tatler Asia may face a reduction in funding.

“Regarding Messi not playing the match today, the government, as well as all football fans, are extremely disappointed about the organisers’ arrangement. The organiser owes all football fans an explanation,” the government’s major sports events committee (MSEC) said.

“The MSEC will take follow-up actions with the organiser according to the terms and conditions, which includes reducing the amount of funding as a result of Messi not playing the match.”

The MSEC said it had granted 15m Hong Kong dollars (£1.5m) for the event along with a grant of one million Hong Kong dollars for the venue.

A near-capacity crowd of 38,323 at Hong Kong Stadium had each paid more then 1,000 Hong Kong dollars (£101) for a ticket.

But Messi did not feature, while Uruguay striker Luis Suarez, who joined Inter Miami in December, also missed the match, with a knee injury.

In the second half, chants of “we want Messi” intensified as the Argentina captain, signed last July, continued to watch from the bench.

Beckham was then drowned out by jeers when he tried to thank supporters for their “incredible support” at the final whistle.

In a statement, the organisers said: “Despite some news reports, Tatler did not have any information about the non-participation of Messi or Suarez prior to kick off.

“Messi and Suarez were deemed unfit to play by their team’s medical department, to everyone’s, including ours, disappointment.”

Inter manager Gerardo Martino said: “We understand the fans’ disappointment in the absence of Messi and Suarez, and we apologise for that, but this was a decision made with our medical staff.

European Super League: Fans and clubs can be convinced to back new plans, says organiser https://www.adomonline.com/european-super-league-fans-and-clubs-can-be-convinced-to-back-new-plans-says-organiser/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 05:53:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2335625 Fans and clubs can be convinced to back new plans for a breakaway European competition, says the head of the organisation behind the new proposal.

In 2021, 12 teams signed up to the breakaway European Super League (ESL) designed to rival Uefa competitions.

On Thursday, the European Court of Justice ruled that banning clubs from joining the league was unlawful and the revamped ESL was outlined hours later.

However, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin mocked the new proposals.

Speaking in a news conference on Thursday, Ceferin said “football is not for sale” and that he looked forward to watching a two-team tournament.

“We will not try to stop them. They can create whatever they want,” he added.

Four of the six Premier League sides who backed breakaway plans in 2021 before withdrawing their support said on Thursday they are committed to Uefa competitions.

The new proposal – put forward by A22, the organisation which backed the original ESL – is for a league system which would include 64 men’s clubs and 32 women’s clubs.

A22 chief executive Bernd Reichart told BBC Sport the proposals had “evolved” from the original ESL as it outlines an annual promotion and relegation system with no permanent members.

There was widespread fury and condemnation to the original ESL plan from fans, supporter groups, European domestic leagues and even government, leading to the collapse of the proposal within 72 hours.

“The 99% of the critics [of the original ESL] in the UK were against permanent membership, that you cannot be relegated,” Reichart said.

“They saw that as a betrayal of the tradition of football. We are now talking about an open, accessible, meritocratic league system in Europe side by side with domestic leagues, late mid-week leaving the national leagues untouched.

“If we convince clubs and convince their fans, why wouldn’t fans not join?”

He suggested there are clubs who are interested in the new proposal, but he refused to name them over fears he would “divide football again”.

“We want to make a proposal which is steadily convincing clubs and fans,” he said.

“The most important part is it’s going to be at the daylight – no-one will have to fear sanctions anymore and can actually contribute to a proposal.

“If no club is convinced, no proposal, not even ours, will move forward.”

The A22 chief explained the new format, based on sporting merit only, would prioritise players’ health as it was built around the current football calendar.

“We are not increasing the number of matchdays, but we are filling them with a better, more exciting competition,” he said.

Reichart also said the new proposal could offer opportunities to smaller clubs who are performing well, such as La Liga leaders Girona, where they can play 14 games and “participate in the European dream from the first match to the last match”.

‘We don’t need to threaten or banish anyone’

Domestic leagues across Europe were quick to condemn A22’s new project, including the Premier League, which said in a statement it will “continue to reject any such concept” as the ESL.

“Supporters are of vital importance to the game and they have time and again made clear their opposition to a ‘breakaway’ competition that severs the link between domestic and European football,” the statement added.

Champions League holders Manchester City said their position to a breakaway league “has not changed”, adding: “We remain committed to the values of European football.”

Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham also said they remain committed to Uefa competitions, while Bayern Munich said “the door for the Super League remains closed”.

City, United, Chelsea and Spurs were among six Premier League sides involved in the original ESL but backed out following widespread condemnation of the plans.

Ceferin said Uefa sees the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling as a “chance to improve some regulations” after the governing body came under fire for changes made to the Champions League format, set to come into effect from the 2024-25 season.

However, he also felt the ECJ decision was based on “old facts”. Uefa says it has made improvements in its rules since the ESL was first proposed which “comply with all relevant European laws and regulations”.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, chairman of the European Clubs Association (ECA), said: “They see it as a victory but it isn’t that at all.”

He added that Uefa is “working on security, medical and reform of competitions” and that clubs still recognise Uefa competitions as the best in the world.

“We don’t need to threaten or banish anyone. Do your own competition, it is fine. But the best club competition in the world is the Champions League,” he said.

“The brand has existed for years and years. The music in itself is a brand.”

Aleksander Ceferin
Ceferin criticised plans for a revamped European Super League in a news conference just hours after they were announced

‘I hope they start their fantastic competition… with two clubs’

The ESL saga began in April 2021 when news broke that 12 teams – including English teams Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – had signed up to the breakaway competition.

Out of the 12 clubs involved only Barcelona and Real Madrid maintained their interest in the creation of a new European competition.

Emboldened by criticism of the revamped ESL plans from multiple clubs as well as the German, French and English leagues, Ceferin mocked that only two clubs would take part in a new competition.

“I hope they start their fantastic competition as soon as possible, with two clubs,” he said.

“I watched the so-called presentation of A22. It’s hard to decide if you should be shocked or amused by the show. It’s even more closed than 2021 and that was rejected by everyone.”

The Manchester United and England legend died on Saturday aged 86.

City have condemned the chants, which were heard in some Etihad Stadium concourses during their game against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

The club say they are “extremely disappointed” by the reports.

A statement from Manchester City said: “Manchester City FC are extremely disappointed to have learned of reports of offensive chanting from a small number of individuals about Sir Bobby Charlton in some of the concourses of Etihad Stadium during half-time of yesterday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion.

“The club condemns these chants in the strongest terms and apologises unreservedly to the family and friends of Sir Bobby, and to all those at Manchester United.

“On this day of all days, when the stadium stood to pay tribute to our own legend in Francis Lee, Manchester City supporters should understand and appreciate as keenly as anyone the need for respect in our game.

“Our security team are studying CCTV footage of the concourse areas. We are thankful to those who have already come forward to report this matter.

“We continue to appeal for any information that can help us identify the individuals involved so that we can take the appropriate action to issue banning orders.”

In a statement, the Premier League said it was “appalled” to hear about the reports of chanting.

“We welcome Manchester City seeking information on those responsible and will support any subsequent action,” they said.

The Phobians have struggled to make an impact following the commencement of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign.

After four games, the Phobians sit 16th on the league log with three points.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting, Togbe Afede XIV emphasized the significance of maintaining fan support.

He further implored the fans to stop promoting only negative things about the club because it drives away potential sponsors.

“One of the biggest challenges of Accra Hearts of Oak is making sure the fans keep supporting because sometimes the negativity also hurts us. It hurts our ability to raise sponsorship. Please let’s understand that football administration, and coaching neither of them is an exact science,” he added.

Hearts of Oak will travel to the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope to face Heart of Lions in the matchday five games on Sunday.

Thousands of fans mob Lionel Messi at a restaurant [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/thousands-of-fans-mob-lionel-messi-at-a-restaurant-video/ Wed, 22 Mar 2023 15:42:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2231283 World Cup winner Lionel Messi was mobbed by fans in his native Argentina whilst having dinner with his family.

The 35-year-old was already a national hero before he led Argentina to the World Cup in Qatar in December, and it was almost inevitable that an enormous crowd of fans would gather to catch of glimpse of the star.

Messi, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their children were eating dinner at Don Julio, a restaurant in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, but were unable to end their meal in peace after news spread that Messi was in the area.

Messi and his family were escorted from the restaurant by local police officers amid a throng of adoring fans, but the PSG star looked in high spirits, much to the delight of his fans.

One admirer, who caught Messi’s exit on video, tweeted in Spanish: ‘Messi in Don Julio. Any Monday night in Palermo.

‘Thanks for looking at me 10, I can die in peace.’

While the Messi family were dining, a sea of people beyond Don Julio’s windows surged forward to try and take pictures of the icon.

The player previously attracted enormous crowds in his home city Rosario, 180 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, in the aftermath of the World Cup final, with fans swamping his car as he sought to attend his niece’s birthday party.

Messi was forced to evacuate the team’s winners’ parade in Buenos Aires due to safety concerns.

The PSG forward is back in his home country for the international break after being named in the Argentina squad that will face Panama and Curacao in upcoming friendlies.

But ahead of joining up with the Argentina camp, Messi found time to enjoy a meal at the steak restaurant ranked 13th on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

His return comes just weeks after his in-laws’ supermarket in Rosario was attacked.

Fourteen shots were reportedly fired at the supermarket, and the perpetrators are said to have left a chilling threat directed at the PSG man, in the form of a message which read: ‘Messi, Javkin is not going to look after you’.

Pablo Javkin is the current mayor of Rosario.

Messi has been linked with a move away from PSG when his contract expires in the summer.

Reports over the weekend, when Messi played in PSG’s 2-0 home defeat to Rennes, suggested that the PSG hierarchy were having second thoughts about extending the player’s deal at the end of the campaign.

Should the club and the player come to the decision that he should move on from the Parisian outfit, Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, David Beckham-owned MLS side Inter Miami and former paymasters Barcelona are all said to be interested in the Argentine.

Minutes after sharing his number, his mobile service jammed as a result of multiple calls coming through per second.

Johnny was, however, pleased to have spoken to a few lucky ones, and he indicated he had great conversations with his fans.

Man Utd fans plan anti-Glazer protest ahead of Liverpool clash https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-fans-plan-anti-glazer-protest-ahead-of-liverpool-clash/ Tue, 16 Aug 2022 13:09:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2150323 Manchester United fans are planning to stage a protest against the Glazer family ahead of next Monday night’s Premier League clash with fierce rivals Liverpool.

Despite initial promise during pre-season, which included a 4-0 win over Liverpool in Thailand, new manager Erik ten Hag has seen his team taken apart by both Brighton and Brentford at the start of the Premier League campaign.

The club is bottom of the Premier League table and Ten Hag is the first United manager to lose his first two games in charge for 101 years. While the Dutchman’s tactics against Brentford in particular clearly didn’t suit the players on the pitch, there is already concern that he isn’t being supported.

The owners also continue to bleed personal profit from United without investing in infrastructure that has badly fallen behind that of rival clubs over the last 10 years.

It is estimated that through servicing debt, which was the result of Malcolm Glazer’s controversial leveraged buyout in 2005, debt repayment and shareholder dividends, United are £1.1bn worse off. Meanwhile, £465m in Class A shares (less influential at board level than Class B) has benefited the Glazers and not the club.

Fans have protested against the owners on a number of occasions before, most notably in 2005 as the takeover was being completed, again in 2010 at the height of the green and gold campaign and in 2021 as a response to the failed Super League breakaway.

But the parasitic nature of the ownership model is now being increasingly talked about again as the hamstrung club fails to improve on the pitch.

A damning statement from the Manchester United Supporters Trust in the wake of the Brentford defeat read, “As we’ve always said, a fish rots from the head. And the ultimate responsibility for the terrible state of our football club must lie with its owners, the Glazer family.

“It is now for them to explain to United fans just why we are in this state, and what they are going to do about it. We’ve had some difficult times in the last decade, but this really does feel like rock bottom. MUST hold the owners of the Club primarily responsible for this new low in our decade of decline. Sir Alex [Ferguson] papered over the cracks, but since 2013 the consequences of our owners have been plain to see.”

Fan group The 1958 are now planning a major protest next week ahead of the Monday night against Liverpool. They have come to the conclusion that a boycott is unlikely to be successful as it would ‘not translate to all the match going fanbase’. Instead they will protest outside the stadium from half an hour before kick-off.

“For Liverpool, we will plant The 1958 flag at the Trinity for those wanting to make a stand from 7:30pm. In support of matchgoing and non matchgoing fans who have made the journey to show their discontent against this failing ownership,” a statement explained.

Shatta made showers of cash rain on some fans who accosted him and his team while plying the Ada route.

Upon sighting his convoy, the fans blocked the road and surrounded his cars in a bid to receive the recognition they deserve.

Faced with the reality that he will not be left to drive off, the Amount hitmaker did the needful. He stood out from the open-top section of his four-wheel drive and threw some notes into the air.

The elated fans scrambled to pick up some cash while others climbed on top of his car for more.

It took the collective efforts of his personal assistant and bodyguards to shield Shatta Wale and his car from the mob.

Posting the moment on his social media platform, Shatta Wale stated that his fans play a pivotal role in his music, and for that, he will forever put a smile on their faces.

He posted: “We are made by the fans. We are shaped by the fans. The fans make the music. The fans grow the brand. We need not be billionaires to show them love when we can. Whatever little we have, could bring a smile! Shouts to the SM massive in Ada.”

PL: Fans to return to stadium on December 2 https://www.adomonline.com/pl-fans-to-return-to-stadium-on-december-2/ Wed, 25 Nov 2020 10:02:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1884242 Fans will be able to return to football grounds from December 2.

Premier League and Football League matches have been behind closed doors since the outbreak of the virus in the United Kingdom in March.

Only supporters from areas with Tier 1 and Tier 2 restrictions will be able to attend, however, as those based in Tier 3 zones will continue to be shut out.

As the Mirror understands, there will also be significant guidelines in place for stadiums when they reopen.

Clubs will only be allowed to welcome either 50% of their capacity back into their stadium, or a maximum of 4,000 people – whichever number is smaller.

Clubs in Tier 2 areas are able to hold a maximum of 2,000 fans.

But of the Premier League sides, only Brighton and Southampton – both of whom are in Tier 1 – will be given the green light to reach their maximum.

Inside, social distancing guidelines will need to be adhered to as well, in accordance with similar restrictions in place at theatres and concert halls.

Test events have already been held by some clubs successfully in the summer.

The news is a welcome boost to clubs, particularly those in the lower divisions, who rely heavily on gate receipts as a main source of income.

Johnson’s announcement comes on the same day a side at the top end laid bare the impact the pandemic has had on their finances.

Tottenham co-owner Daniel Levy claims that Spurs could lose in the region of £150million of revenue this season if the whole campaign is played out without fans present.

Spurs have already announced losses of more than £60m for the year ending in June, though opening their stadium for just a small number of fans will do little to claw back those costs.

Buhari arranges for evacuation of stranded Nigeria world cup fans https://www.adomonline.com/nigerias-president-buhari-orders-home-stranded-world-cup-fans/ Wed, 18 Jul 2018 06:24:31 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=1214021 Stranded Nigerian football fans camped on the floor outside the country’s embassy in Moscow have been ordered home by President Muhammadu Buhari, his aide said.

Around 200 Nigerians became stranded in Russia following the World Cup as they did not have a return ticket home, authorities said.

They had gone to support the national Super Eagles team, but some also planned to settle in Russia after the tournament.
Buhari has ordered the Minister of Aviation and Foreign Ministry to bring the fans back home, the President’s Senior Special Assistant, Garba Shehu said.

Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode was also forced to step in last week to cover the return expenses of around 50 of the fans.

Two brothers Ismail and Sodiq Olamilekan said they paid N250,000 naira ($800) each to a man in Lagos for their Fan IDs.
They said they planned to become professional footballers in Russia.

Others paid over one million in the local currency, naira ($3,000) for the document, they said.

“The man told us that with the Fan ID we could get a job and stay here,” Ismail told AFP at a hostel on the outskirts of Moscow.
“But when we got here we discovered that it was a fraud, that he had just collected the money and lied to us,” he said.

Rafiu Ladipo, of the Nigerian Supporters Club, told CNN: “Some of those who traveled for other reasons beyond the World Cup did so in ignorance and believing that Europe is all rosy and everything becomes available as soon as you touch down.”

Bastie Samir fans attacked in Bukom https://www.adomonline.com/bastie-samir-fans-attacked-bukom/ Mon, 23 Oct 2017 11:42:39 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=600811 Joy News is learning that supporters of boxer Bastie Samir were attacked on Saturday night after his shocking victory against Braimah Kamoko.

Samir Bestie stopped Braimah, popularly known as Bukom Banku in the seventh round ending his unbeaten record at the Bukom Boxing Arena in the fight watched by thousands.

But the jubilation for Bastie’s supporters living in Bukom was cut short.

Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba has been in the community and reports that there is tension among community members.

Supporters of Bukom Banku, Maxwell learned, harassed Bestie’s supporters for jubilating following his victory.

For many of Banku’s fans, they do not understand why as Bukom people they should rejoice over Banku’s loss.

Some of them who spoke to Maxwell said their shops and other properties were set on fire by supporters of Bukom Banku.

“I have been interacting with a gentleman whose makeshift shop where he sells mobile phone credits was destroyed and some of the community members are saying the people who were attacked were fans of Bastie Samir,” Maxwell said.

He added that a gentleman who claimed to be an opinion leader in the community deleted videos his cameraman had taken of the charred buildings.

The same man took his phone and deleted pictures he had personally taken of the destroyed shops as well.

Maxwell and his cameraman were also threatened and asked to leave the community and Bastie’s fans were prevented from speaking to the crew.

“They warned us not to return to the community to report about what happened,” Maxwell said.

It also appears that many of the community members had been warned against speaking to the media about the fight.

“At the Bukom Park we met about 20 gentlemen who were watching a game of football and they told me they just don’t want to comment on the fight that happened on Saturday, otherwise they will get into trouble,” Maxwell recounted.

Those who were bold enough to approach Maxwell, were warned and threatened.

Maxwell also learnt that, but for the timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service, many properties and possibily, a major part of the community would have been destroyed by the fire.

There is, however, general calm in the community on Monday. People are going about their daily activities as they normally would.

Saudi Arabia bans Barcelona jerseys with 15-year prison sentence https://www.adomonline.com/saudi-arabia-bans-barcelona-jerseys-15-year-prison-sentence/ Mon, 12 Jun 2017 06:20:23 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=172081

Wearing a Barcelona shirt in Saudi Arabia now risks a €135,000 fine and up to 15 years in prison.

The change in law follows the cutting of diplomatic relations and borders with Qatar, who the Saudi Kingdom this week accused of supporting ISIS.

Saudi Arabia have moved to punish Barcelona’s shirt sponsors of four years, Qatar Airways, whose company logo adorns the Spanish club’s kit and other promotional material.

According to Sky Italy, those caught wearing shirts with the Qatar Airways wording now face a €135,000 euro fine and up to 15 years in prison.

A ban could now follow in countries that sided with Saudi Arabia in the international row including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain.

Barcelona are, however, switching shirt sponsors to Japanese online retailer Rakuten from the 2017/18 season for four years.

Paris Saint-Germain were also affected this week as the Ligue 1 club’s Qatari owners have a shirt sponsorship deal with Emirates, but the UAE’s national carrier have stopped flights between the two countries.

But the French club, who have two more seasons with Emirates, told Le Parisien: “It will have no effect on the club, there is no worry.”

The massively-attended service hosted by Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Markwei (an Arsenal fan) at the Living Streams International Church in Accra was held with members dressed in their Chelsea jerseys while a cake was cut to celebrate the Stamford Bridge title.

Despite the London-based club being thousands of miles away from Ghana, the Ghanaian fans of the club celebrated it gusto as the pastor preached the sermon under the theme ‘Learn to promote the success of others’.

The event which was heavily publicized by another famous pastor Rev. Azigiza Junior, who is an ardent Blues fan, saw supporters of some rival English sides also attending to hear the sermon.

Rev. Dr. Markwei told the title-starved fans of Arsenal and Manchester United who were in attendance that it is Godly to also celebrate the success of others.

“Fellowship with those who rejoice in your victory. They were 10th last year and we called them names thinking they can’t rise again but today here they are on top. With God nothing is impossible,” Rev. Markwei  said in his sermon.

The exploits of former Chelsea stars Michael Essien and Marcel Desailly – both Ghanaians – have drawn a huge following for Chelsea in the West African country.

This results in massive rivalry between supporters of various English sides in the country with Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham having huge followers while West Ham has a growing fanbase because of their Ghanaian midfielder Andre Ayew.

So when the poster emerged few weeks ago over the pending church service, many thought it was meant to poke fun at supporters of their rival clubs.

Angry fans descend on Nadia Buari https://www.adomonline.com/angry-fans-descend-nadia-buari/ Mon, 08 May 2017 12:31:37 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=108641 Nadia Buari has been teasing her Instagram fans with photos of her babies–by constantly posting photos of them but intentionally hiding their faces.

She has been doing this for over a year now and it seems the fans are fed-up as a recent photo she posted of her babies fetched her backlash from angry fans instead of the usual priases.

An Instagram follower by username Uche_ashley wrote under the photo; “Maybe she’s waiting for her Mexican baby daddy to marry her first before she show there faces.cos she’s beens engaged for a decade now @iamnadiabuari”

Mon_lisssa also commented: “@frimpongg38 exactly sis .we make them who they are .they call themselves celebrities.Care for your fans .come and see how American celebrities always appreciate their fans . And you prince whatever calling me for saying the truth.Privacy is privacy. He could go through comments to respond to my comment.”

She wrote again: “mon_lisssa You are a celebrity and its just normal for your fans to wana know your babies face .We all respect your privacy but then do as a favor not to post and shhow their back .whats up with the privacy you claiming .ya’ll want the damn attention.gh celebrities smh”

“If is Not by force to show their face then of cos there is no point showing their backs we are beginning to think you have some thing hidden some where,Even black chyna showed Dreams face same day she had dream let as think enough of this unnecessary attention seeking,” Beebeyswiss said.

Maameabenaappiah also had this to say: “@mon_lisssa preach girl preach!!!the put their business out there and claim privacy…annoying set of ppl.”

Surely the fans have a point; what’s the point in always putting photos of your children on Instagram and yet hiding their faces each time?

Angry fans chase Kotoko at Baba Yara Stadium https://www.adomonline.com/angry-fans-chase-kotoko-baba-yara-stadium/ Mon, 10 Apr 2017 09:40:43 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=69871 Angry Asante Kotoko fans yesterday vented their spleen on their team after watching them draw another game at home, following the team’s goalless result against visiting Ebusua Dwarfs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

It took the intervention of security personnel on duty at the Baba Yara Stadium to avert what could have been physical attacks on the team, as fans beseiged the main gate in intending to attack the players.

While the physical attack was prevented, the fans, however, verbally attacked the Kotoko players and officials. Referee Maxwell Hanson and his assistants were also not spared the verbal attacks for what the fans perceived to be unfair officiating against the Porcupine Warriors who failed to find the back of the net for the second consecutive home game and are without a win in their last four games.

The behaviour of the fans came just three days after they chased out their Croatian trainer, Zdravko Lugarosic, from the team’s training grounds, following what they described as uninspiring performance by the team.

Yesterday, the Porcupine Warriors wanted to appease their fans with a victory and started the game with a series of attacks but they were met by the visitors whose game plan was to, at least, force a draw against Kotoko.

We’re still top, Atsu tells Newcastle fans https://www.adomonline.com/still-top-atsu-tells-newcastle-fans/ Tue, 14 Mar 2017 08:22:05 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=26301 Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu believes their hopes of qualifying for the English Premier League is still alive despite Saturday’s loss to Fulham.

The Magpies suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at home, but still find themselves on top of the table after matchday 37.

Rafael Benitez’s side are now tied with Brighton and Hove Albion, the latter recording a 3-0 home triumph over Derby County on Friday.

“We have to put this game behind us,” Atsu said, as reported by The Chronicle.

“We lost the game too easily and it’s a very disappointing result for us.

“But we have to put it out of our minds and focus on the next game. This is all we can do.

“We have to stay concentrated, though.

“We’re not just playing one game, we need to focus on the next ones coming up. Every game, home or away, matters.

“It’s up to us to make things right, we’re still top of the league and it’s time to stick together.”

Newcastle face Birmingham City in their next Championship game on Saturday.

Atsu, on loan from Chelsea, has netted three times in 24 appearances for the Magpies.
