An AK47 rifle and other police equipment that were taken from the Sehwi Asafo Police Station have been recovered.

The items were found abandoned in a bush near the Asafo community cemetery in the Sehwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region.

Last Saturday, Adom News reported that suspected robbers had broken into the Sehwi Asafo Police Station by scaling through the iron-gated window of the station’s armoury.

They made away with the rifle and other police-issued equipment before fleeing the scene, leaving the station in disarray.

Following an intense search by security personnel and local authorities, the stolen items were discovered intact, hidden in a thick bush near the cemetery.

The Assemblyman for the Sehwi Asafo Electoral Area, Frederick Kwarteng, stated that the discovery has brought relief to the community as fear and panic had gripped residents following the theft.

He further disclosed that the local authorities would be holding a crucial meeting with the police to discuss the security situation in the area.

He remarked that security is a shared responsibility and urged residents to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of the community.

Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to track down the suspects behind the robbery and bring them to justice.

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a cache of weapons and ammunition at the Golden Jubilee Terminal at Tema Port.

The seized items include 53 pistols (side arms), 65 rounds of live ammunition, 74 magazines, and a pistol holster.

The suspects connected to the shipment were arrested and handed over to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, November 20, the Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier Zibrim Ayorrogo, revealed that the items were intercepted on Monday, November 4.

According to him, the 40-foot container, numbered MEDU4496951, had been declared as containing vehicles and personal effects upon its arrival at Tema Port from the United States.

“During a routine examination on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Golden Jubilee Terminal, Customs officers, in the presence of the declarant/agent and the importer’s representative, uncovered 53 side arms, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed in three suitcases,” Brigadier Ayorrogo stated.

He added that the Customs team promptly alerted the GRA’s Intelligence and Investigations Unit and the Preventive Unit, who confirmed the discovery.

“All firearms, ammunition, and magazines were seized, and the remaining contents of the container were detained for further scrutiny. The agent and the consignee’s representative were subsequently arrested and interrogated,” he explained.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the illegal importation of the weapons.

3 grabbed for possessing firearms https://www.adomonline.com/3-grabbed-for-possessing-firearms/ Sat, 17 Jul 2021 13:30:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1988266 The Rapid Deployment Force unit of the Volta Regional Police Command has arrested three men in possession of firearms and other ammunition.

Laptops and assorted mobile phones which were being conveyed in a vehicle suspected to be stolen were also retrieved.

The three suspects — Nervis Otu Laryea, 33; Ebenezer Osei, 38, and Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, 37 — were taken into custody shortly after they were arrested on July 6, 2021, following a routine check by the patrol team stationed along the Kpando-Have motor road.

All 27 assorted mobile phones were marked with price tags, while black and green hoody pullovers were also retrieved from the bags of the suspects.

The suspects were not only found to be in possession of the stolen items but were found in possession of the Toyota Corolla suspected to be stolen.

Various Reason

The Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Edward Oduro Kwarteng, in a media briefing last Wednesday, said further investigations revealed that the vehicle with registration number AC 1621-18 was acquired by Nervis Otu Laryea at Afienya from an unnamed individual from Togo but without documents.

The items retrieved by the Police

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, during preliminary investigations, also told the police that he obtained the assorted mobile phones without receipts at Alavanyo Wudidi from a man who he could not name.

Ebenezer Osei, meanwhile, claimed to have visited a shrine at Alavanyo with Laryea for spiritual assistance in his business, and the two offered Mubarak a lift on their way back.

DCOP Oduro Kwarteng said it took a careful and painstaking search for the three foreign pistols craftily hidden in the crevices of a false compartment in the car to be retrieved along with 40 rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition.

The suspects, who were subsequently slapped with weapons-related charges, remain in police custody after they were remanded by the Ho District Magistrate Court 1, presided over by Robert Addo, on July 9, 2021.

They are to reappear on July 22, 2021.

436 pistols and ammunition impounded at Tema Port https://www.adomonline.com/436-pistols-and-ammunition-impounded-at-tema-port/ Sat, 10 Oct 2020 20:49:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1865519 The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authorityon Friday, October 9 impounded a consignment said to contain pistols illegally imported from Turkey.

The ammunitions were concealed in the consignment of personal effects.

They belong to one Felix Wallace, who has been arrested by the marine police.

He had come to clear his 1X20 footer container of household goods and personal effects but upon a physical examination of the consignment, a pistol was found hidden in a box.

The matter attracted personnel from Bureau of National Investigations and National Security, who have taken the matter up for investigations.

But this has not gone down well with the major opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, which has called for transparency in the matter.

It’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, alleges that some ‘big men’ are lobbying to get the consignment released.

“While we commend the Customs Excise and Preventive Service unit at Tema Port for acting swiftly to impound this consignment, we demand that they update the nation on this worrying development in the spirit of transparency,” he said in a release on Saturday, October 10, 2020.
