Students of the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Bono East Region have staged a demonstration to protest what they describe as poor living and learning conditions at the institution, while demanding the removal of the principal.
Wearing red armbands, the aggrieved students took to the streets after reportedly forcing the principal off campus and locking the offices of some staff members.
The protesters accused the school’s management of failing to address longstanding concerns despite the high fees paid by students.
According to them, inadequate lighting on campus, poor sanitation and the quality of food served to students have become major challenges affecting their welfare.
They also expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as the poor attitude of some lecturers towards teaching and academic work.
The students said their protest was driven by frustration after several appeals to management yielded no results.
The demonstration reportedly began on Wednesday night, but a swift intervention by the police prevented the situation from escalating into widespread destruction of property.
After leaving the campus, the students marched from Krobo to Techiman, a distance of more than four miles, to draw public attention to their grievances.
Some of the demonstrators told Adom News that they would continue to press for improved conditions and changes in the school’s administration until their concerns are addressed.
Efforts by Adom News to obtain a response from the Principal, Ms Helen Dwamena, were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, police have arrested a number of students in connection with the protest. Reports also indicate that some journalists covering the demonstration were arrested, although the circumstances surrounding their arrest were not immediately clear.
