Former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Chief Executive Officer Solomon Asamoah and former GIIF Board Chairman Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi are yet to file their defence in the ongoing Sky Train trial, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai has disclosed.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, July 18, Mr Srem-Sai said the deadline for the two accused persons to file their defence or witness statements expires next week.
According to him, the prosecution has not yet received any witness statements from either Solomon Asamoah or Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi.
The update comes two weeks after the High Court dismissed the accused persons’ submission of no case, ruling that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence for the trial to continue.
The court subsequently directed the two men to open their defence, should they choose to do so.
The case centres on a US$2 million payment made by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund in 2019 for an equity stake in a project development company associated with the proposed Accra Sky Train project.
The prosecution contends that the payment was authorised without the necessary board approval and that the project never materialised, causing financial loss to the state.
However, Solomon Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi have denied all the charges against them, with the matter still pending before the High Court.
