The National Secretariat of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union – Ghana (TEWU-GH) has dismissed a letter circulating on social media and allegedly endorsed by seven local chairmen, describing it as unauthorised and misleading.
In a statement from the National Chairman, the Union clarified that the document, which claimed the Secretariat had been relocated from Tamale to Kumasi and purported to comment on national decisions, was issued without approval from the national leadership.
The Chairman stressed that no meeting or directive from the Secretariat supported the actions of the signatories.
The statement described the conduct as “procedurally wrong, constitutionally unsupported and administratively unacceptable,” noting that the National Secretariat alone is empowered to call NEC meetings, issue national directives, and communicate the Union’s official positions.
Leadership also reiterated that the NEC comprises all local executives, not just chairmen, making the claims in the disputed letter inaccurate.
The Union warned that attempts to bypass established structures undermine TEWU-GH’s unity and stability, insisting that the communication should be completely disregarded.
The Secretariat further rejected accusations that it has failed to push vigorously for a bargaining certificate, calling the claims baseless and an attempt to sow division within the Union.
It confirmed that the Secretariat remains based at the University for Development Studies in Tamale until an authorised directive states otherwise. A NEC meeting will soon be held to address the issue fully, including the motivations behind the unauthorised letter.
The statement assured members that the National Secretariat continues to operate with full legitimacy and remains committed to protecting the interests of TEWU-GH.
