A 37-year-old herbalist and self-acclaimed spiritualist, Enock Antwi, alias Nana Kakali, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks after being charged with stealing a Hyundai Atos taxi cab belonging to a driver at Assin Manso in the Central Region.
Nana Kakali, a resident of Wassa Nkran, has been described by the police as a notorious car snatcher.
He was arrested on August 23, 2026, at his hideout in Agona Swedru by the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command following intelligence-led investigations into the theft of the taxi, registered GT 6165-21.
Nana Kakali was arraigned before the Assin Fosu District Court, where the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Gilbert Abagna Anyongo, prayed the court to remand him into custody to enable the police to complete investigations.
The court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, granted the application and remanded Nana Kakali into police custody for two weeks. He is expected to reappear on September 8, 2026.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Benjamin Akyerefi Baidoo, alias Nana Maaley, is a driver residing at Assin Manso.
The court heard that Nana Kakali met the complainant on July 1, 2026, when he visited Assin Manso to purchase a dove for spiritual purposes.
During their interaction, Nana Kakali obtained the complainant’s telephone number and offered to assist him with what he described as his spiritual problems. The two subsequently remained in contact.
On July 17, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., the complainant met Nana Kali after work and took him to his residence, where Nana Kakali prepared a concoction for him to bathe with.
Later that evening, the complainant asked Nana Kakali to accompany him in his Hyundai Atos taxi to deliver some items to his sister.
According to the prosecution, the vehicle got stuck along the way, prompting the complainant to walk to his sister’s residence.
Nana Kakali told him he would remain behind and wait for him. However, when the complainant returned, he discovered that the taxi had disappeared and Nana Kakali was nowhere to be found.
The complainant returned home and later attempted to contact Nana Kakali by telephone, only to discover that the number was no longer available on his phone.
The matter was reported to the Assin Fosu Cybercrime Unit on August 12, 2026, for investigation.
As part of the investigation, the police obtained a court order from the Assin Fosu District Court and submitted it to MTN Ghana to assist in retrieving telecommunications records.
Intelligence gathered from the records and other investigations subsequently led the police to Nana Kakali’s hideout in Agona Swedru, where he was arrested on August 23.
During interrogation, Nana Kakali admitted stealing the taxi and told investigators that he had sold it to scrap dealers for GH¢7,000, of which he had received GH¢2,500 as part payment.
He subsequently led investigators to Suhum, where the stolen Hyundai Atos taxi was retrieved.
The police later obtained a caution statement from Nana Kakali in which he admitted the offence. Following the investigations, Nana Kakali was charged and arraigned before the court.
The prosecution again prayed the court for a custodial remand to enable investigators to complete the remaining aspects of the case.
The court granted the application and remanded Nana Kakali into police custody for two weeks.
He will reappear before the Assin Fosu District Court on September 8, 2026.
The accused, Nana Kakali, speaking exclusively with media passionately pleaded for leniency, describing the incident as a mistake.
Meanwhile, the victim, Benjamin Akyerefi narrated how the incident unfolded and commended the Cybercrime Unit of the Central North Regional Police Command for its efforts in arresting the accused and retrieving the stolen vehicle.
