Ghanaian business mogul and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has pledged to extend his support for the Okere Unity Community Football League beyond the Eastern Region as part of efforts to promote youth development through sports.
Alhaji Agongo, through the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, provided footballs, a trophy, goalkeepers’ gloves and shin pads for the launch of the tournament.
Speaking on the initiative, the philanthropist said he intends to provide further support as the league expands to other regions.
“This is about our young people. When we invest in sports at the community level, we invest in their future,” he said.
“I have provided some items to get things started, but this is just the beginning. I intend to do more to support this initiative across the various regions after the Eastern Region.”
The Okere Unity Community Football League was officially launched on July 24, 2026, at Twum-Guaso in the Eastern Region.
The community-based tournament, which is scheduled to run from July to October 2026, is aimed at bringing together towns and villages within the Okere Constituency while using football as a platform to engage and educate young people on critical social issues.
The league will also be used to educate the youth on HIV/AIDS prevention and the dangers of drug abuse, while promoting unity, social cohesion and community development.
The initiative attracted traditional and religious leaders, youth groups and residents from across the constituency, with organisers expressing optimism that it would help identify emerging football talents.
The Director-General of the NSA, Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, who attended the launch, commended the initiative and described it as a model that could be replicated across the country.
He said community-level sports initiatives provide opportunities to bring people together while creating platforms for social interventions, policy education and the dissemination of important information.
“The President is totally committed to the transformation of sports infrastructure in Ghana, and initiatives like this at the community level complement that vision,” he said.
Alhaji Agongo’s latest intervention adds to his longstanding philanthropic efforts in education, healthcare and youth development.
Over the years, he has supported communities by constructing and renovating schools, assisting underprivileged students with school fees and settling medical bills for vulnerable patients.
Organisers believe his pledge to extend support beyond the Eastern Region could help transform the Okere initiative into a broader platform for youth development through sports.
They hope the league will not only strengthen community bonds and promote healthy recreation but also provide a sustained platform for engaging young people on issues affecting their lives and communities.
