In a heartwarming show of solidarity and support, the foundation — established by former Member of Parliament and Minister, Mrs. Ursula Owusu — donated a wide range of relief items to alleviate the immediate challenges faced by the school.

The donation included 100 pieces of 25kg bags of rice, 100 plastic chairs, 20 bags of mattresses, 50 bags of 50kg maize, 3 bags of 100kg gari, and 4 bags of 100kg beans.

The items were presented on behalf of the foundation by its leading members, William Adu, Faustina Kisse, and Rita Appiah, during a brief ceremony held on the school’s campus.

They were accompanied by members of the school’s 1982 year group alumni association, of which Mrs. Ursula Owusu is a proud member.

Presenting the items, Mr. William Adu conveyed the foundation’s heartfelt sympathies and reiterated its commitment to support the school.

“The foundation was devastated by the news of the fire and immediately resolved to extend help. This school helped shape our founder, and in times like this, we believe it is our responsibility to stand with the institution that played such a crucial role in her life,” Mr. Adu stated.

The donation was warmly received by the school’s headmistress, Madam Rejoice Acolor, who expressed immense gratitude on behalf of the management, staff, and students. She described the gesture as not only timely but deeply inspiring.

Telcos will bear full cost of SIM registration – Communications Minister https://www.adomonline.com/telcos-will-bear-full-cost-of-sim-registration-communications-minister/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 07:48:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2525382 The Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed that telecommunications companies will bear the full cost of Ghana’s forthcoming SIM card registration exercise.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, Mr. George explained that the move is part of efforts to strengthen the country’s telecommunications infrastructure while ensuring accountability among industry players.

He revealed that plans are underway to lay a Legislative Instrument (LI) before Parliament to provide legal backing for the policy.

“They [telcos] will pay for it. I will make them pay for it. There is an LI that we will be laying before Parliament,” he said firmly.

Mr. George drew a clear distinction between the upcoming exercise and the SIM re-registration initiative led by his predecessor, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. He criticised the previous approach and stressed that the new exercise is not a re-registration but a fresh, comprehensive registration process designed to clean up and centralise the national SIM card database.

“That was one of my criticisms of Ursula Owusu—that the re-registration she did… and that is why I have been clear that I am not doing a re-registration. I am doing a SIM registration,” he clarified.

The Minister further noted that the upcoming exercise will rely exclusively on the Ghana Card, which he described as the “single source of truth” for identity verification.

According to him, this approach will ensure that the data collected is accurate, verifiable, and centralised—addressing the gaps and inconsistencies that plagued past registration exercises.

Providing historical context, Mr. George referenced the last legislation governing SIM registration, enacted in 2010 under then-Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

“The last LI on the record for registration was 2010 by Haruna Iddrisu, and don’t forget that registration Haruna did—there was no Ghana Card at the time, and so there was no single source of truth,” he concluded.

AirtelTigo’s total debts exceed $200million – Sam George https://www.adomonline.com/airteltigos-total-debts-exceed-200million-sam-george/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 18:26:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2523560 The government has disclosed the financial troubles facing state-owned telecom operator AirtelTigo, which is saddled with a $200 million debt and is losing about GH₵20 million every month.

At a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, criticised the decision by the previous administration to acquire the company for just $1.

Mr George described the acquisition as “ill-informed, reckless and unpatriotic”, as he outlined the extent of the company’s challenges.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo administration purchased AirtelTigo in 2020 for a symbolic $1 but inherited a $400 million debt.

He said the previous government failed to carry out proper due diligence and left the company in what he called a “failing and obsolete” condition.

Although the debt has been restructured to $200 million, the company continues to post monthly losses of around GH₵20 million.

He stated that revenue generated by the telecommunications company is not enough to cover operational expenses. Mr George also revealed that AirtelTigo’s core billing and network systems have not been upgraded in five years and are no longer fit for purpose.

He said the ministry is in talks with creditors to reduce the debt and help keep the company afloat. A new policy direction, he added, would be announced soon to protect jobs and chart a path for the company’s future.

Ayariga shoots down calls to summon Communications Minister over radio station closure https://www.adomonline.com/ayariga-shoots-down-calls-to-summon-communications-minister-over-radio-station-closure/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 08:48:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2508694 Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has dismissed demands to summon the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, over the closure of seven radio stations.

According to the Bawku Central MP, Mr. George was only enforcing existing regulations, stating that attempts to vilify him were disappointing.

“I am surprised that you will make the minister the subject of castigation and unnecessary attacks, trying to question his competence when all he is saying in this communication is that the NCA Director General is enforcing the law because these stations are operating without authorisation,” he stated on the floor of Parliament.

The Minister, on February 18, 2025, directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to shut down seven radio stations.

A media advisory from the ministry listed the affected stations as Fire Group of Companies (Sunyani – 90.1 MHz), I-Zar Consult Limited (Tamale – 89.7 MHz), Abochannel Media Group (Adidome – 105.7 MHz), Okyeame Radio Limited (Bibiani – 99.7 MHz), Mumen Bono Foundation (Techiman – 99.7 MHz), and Osikani Community FM (Nkrankwanta – 99.7 MHz).

The ministry justified the move, stating that the affected stations were operating without valid frequency authorisations, in violation of Section 2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

On the back of this, Mr. Ayariga maintained that radio stations must adhere to licensing regulations.

He emphasised that any station operating illegally would face shutdowns, and those affected had the option of applying for proper authorisation.

“The minister will shut the radio stations down today, and tomorrow they should go for authorisation. If the stations had frequency authorisation, he wouldn’t have shut them down. Why didn’t he shut down Joy FM, Citi FM, and all other stations that are operating legally?” he questioned.

The Majority remains firm in its position that the minister acted within the scope of the law.

It has thus rejected calls for him to be summoned, insisting that regulatory compliance is non-negotiable and must be upheld to ensure fair and legal broadcasting practices across the country.

2024 National Honours was a waste of time; some recipients undeserving – Franklin Cudjoe https://www.adomonline.com/2024-national-honours-was-a-waste-of-time-some-recipients-undeserving-franklin-cudjoe/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 12:29:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488993 The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticised President Nana Akufo-Addo over the 2024 National Honours, describing it as unnecessary and a waste of time.

He has acknowledged that awards are good, however, they should be given to people who actually deserve them.

“Awards are good but national awards must go to rare people. Dr Kwame Nkrumah gave only one award within the six years of his regime but successive governments have now made it a child’s play.

“Politician now want to be rewarding themselves when leaving office. Kufuor did same and that affected his legacy because he didn’t merit it due to the scandals that marred the end of his administration,” he said.

Mr Cudjoe is of the view that given the hardships Ghanaians have endured under the Akufo-Addo-led government, the event shouldn’t have even been held.

He made these remarks on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem while expressing disappointment in some of the recipients of the honourary awards.

Mr Cudjoe also demanded the criteria for the selection of the recipients as he questioned their contribution towards national development.

“Monday’s event should have been suspended. I don’t know what benchmark they used to give the awards especially Akufo-Addo’s people. I don’t know what they did; a few individuals should have been awarded and not any politician because I don’t think they deserved it including himself[Akufo-Addo]. They just wasted our money,” he fumed.

For him, politicians, particularly Communication Minister; Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomsom, Housing Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye and Lands Minister, Abu Jinapor did not deserve the awards.

“I don’t know what Asenso Boakye has done, Abu Jinapor, Hawa Koomson; another terrible one, gun wielding woman. It creates the impression that women can get into politics and become thugs. She[Hawa Koomson] was the minister for special initiatives a lot of monies were wasted but what did she do?

“Look at Ursula; someone who insults and doesn’t respect. Look at what she did with Kelni DVG Addison is a good guy but you don’t reward people based on that; anybody at Bank of Ghana is not deserving of any award. Only a few of them were deserving. It was a total waste of time and money,” he stated.

The award was given on Monday, December 30, 2024, to several individuals and institutions in recognition of their significant contribution to the national development, particularly in the media landscape.

The outgoing Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ministers of State and other outstanding private individuals were decorated by President Akufo-Addo.

“The assurance for the Ghanaian people is that they need to be patient with us. Definitely, it is going to take a while to figure out how bad the mess is, and then we all put in our bit to cut the cost and to do things in moderation, even in our constituencies and everywhere,” he said.

Dr Addo expressed confidence in President-elect John Dramani Mahama, citing his experience and leadership style as key factors in ensuring the success of the new administration.

“I think we will all have to brighten our own corners, and I believe with the experience that His Excellency [John Dramani Mahama] has and his style of leadership, definitely, it will turn out good,” he remarked.

The new MP emerged victorious over the incumbent Member of Parliament, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, in the just-ended general elections last Saturday.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful lost her seat after securing 26,575 votes, while Dr Addo won with 31,866 votes.

Afenyo-Markin accuses NDC of deliberately delaying collation of results in Eastern region https://www.adomonline.com/afenyo-markin-accuses-ndc-of-deliberately-delaying-collation-of-results-in-eastern-region/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 15:15:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483031 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately delaying the collation of election results in some constituencies in the Eastern Region.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC is aware they have lost parliamentary seats in the affected constituencies and are intentionally frustrating the process.

Speaking to JoyNews, he claimed the NDC had already collated their results, which indicate their defeat, yet they are creating unnecessary delays.

“It’s before them, and they’re just frustrating the process, delaying the process. They’ve compiled; they know they’ve lost.

“In their own collated figures, they know they’ve lost, and now they are saying they cannot find their pink sheets, so they want to rely on the EC’s pink sheet,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He alleged that the NDC is feigning a lack of pink sheets, despite having already compiled their results.

“When a figure is mentioned, they now go tracing, pretending they don’t have the pink sheet, and yet they have compiled their results. I think the NDC should stop this. It won’t help us. This is not democracy,” he added.

The Majority Leader further criticized the NDC’s actions, pointing out that the NPP conceded the presidential results when their own collation indicated a loss.

He questioned why the NDC would obstruct the process at collation centres when they already know their results.

“We have all the world’s patience. We believe in due process. We will have patience and wait. Whatever they do, at the end of the day, my respected colleague, Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh, who is their target, will remain victorious.

“They cannot defeat him. We have all our pink sheets. We have scanned them also. We have sought copies. We have everything compiled, so we have nothing to fear at all,” Afenyo-Markin added.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has relocated the collation of results for some constituencies in the Eastern Region to the Police Training School in Tesano, in the Greater Accra Region.

This decision follows disputes over the collation process in the Eastern Region, which became chaotic in some areas.

The move by the Commission aims to prevent further disruptions at the collation centres.

JoyNews’ Sweety Aborchie, reporting on the situation, said that three constituencies are involved: Akwatia, Nsawam Adoagyiri, and Fanteakwa, all in the Eastern Region.

Bantama NDC parliamentary candidate halt destruction of Metro Mass buses in Kumasi https://www.adomonline.com/bantama-ndc-parliamentary-candidate-halt-destruction-of-metro-mass-buses-in-kumasi/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 15:09:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2483022 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Bantama constituency in the Ashanti Region, Simon Addai Dapaah, along with several party members, has intervened to stop individuals from vandalizing and selling parts of faulty buses at the Bantama depot of Metro Mass Transit in Kumasi.

Over 70 buses at the depot, abandoned due to mechanical issues, were at risk of being dismantled for parts.

The incident follows a series of attacks on state institutions across the country after the winner of the December 7th elections was declared.

In Kumasi, some individuals had been dismantling buses that were out of service and attempting to sell their parts.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Addai Dapaah expressed concern about the situation, saying:

“We are here to protect government property. We want to ensure this institution survives. It is crucial that we keep this business alive and create jobs for the youth.”

He added that the group had successfully prevented the sale of about 79 buses, which were nearly sold off as scrap metal.

“We cannot allow this institution to collapse,” he noted.

The Metro Mass security coordinator, Alhaji Najj, condemned the vandalism, calling it an act of hooliganism that must not be tolerated.

“We will not let this happen again. The people of Bantama are determined to protect this institution. Knowing that they are going into opposition, they want to bring down this institution, but we are here to fight against that,” he stated.

The intervention comes as Metro Mass Transit faces growing challenges in maintaining its vehicles, with a significant number of buses grounded.

Mr. Addai Dapaah and his party members promised to continue protecting the institution from further attacks.

In her view, even the incumbent MP, O.B. Amoah, who chose not to seek re-election, knew she was a force to reckon with.

“Even O.B. Amoah knew I was a force to reckon with. I was waiting for him to contest again so that I could beat him, but since he didn’t, I knew the one who contested was his person, so I used the opportunity to defeat him,” she said.

Expressing her confidence in her win, Madam Dziwornu stated in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, that it can only be God.

“It was God. I was on an assignment to deliver my people, and I knew I would win right from the primaries. My message was consistent, and it was one vision for the future.”

Akuapem South has traditionally been a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but Dziwornu’s victory marks a significant shift.

She won with 15,438 votes, narrowly defeating Eric Yeboah Apeadu of the NPP, who garnered 15,304 votes.

Madam Dziwornu spoke about the confidence she had even before the election.

“I wasn’t scared because what was in me was bigger than what was in the world,” she said, stressing her strong resolve.

Reflecting on her win, she added, “I knew history was about to be made,” noting that her victory is a testament to the people’s faith in her leadership.

Going forward, she expressed her commitment to serving her constituents.

“I will do more for the people in this constituency, especially those who want to travel and those who need jobs in the military and police,” she promised.

Her victory marks a historic moment for the NDC, as they have successfully taken the Akuapem South seat from the NPP, breaking their long-standing dominance in the constituency.

I was expecting a bigger margin – Ida Asiedu on her victory in Ayensuano https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-expecting-a-bigger-margin-ida-asiedu-on-her-victory-in-ayensuano/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 09:35:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482271 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for the Ayensuano constituency, Ida Adjoa Asiedu, has shared her thoughts on her victory in the December 7, 2024, elections.

In her view, she was expecting a wider margin of victory based on the numbers, explaining that the low voter turnout was a key factor in the smaller margin.

“Looking at the figures, I was expecting a bigger gap. If more people had come out to vote, I believe I would have had a margin of at least 10,000 votes” she said in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show Wednesday.

Madam Asiedu secured 18,229 votes, narrowly defeating her closest contender, Teddy Saforo Addy, who received 17,182 votes.

Other candidates, Abrokwa Sintim and Learned Obiri, garnered 722 and 140 votes, respectively.

Despite the close margin, Madam Asiedu said the victory reflects the strong presence of the NPP in the constituency.

However, she attributed much of her success to her efforts in community development, particularly the completion of road projects within the constituency.

“I believe I was given the nod because I’ve worked hard to improve the lives of the people here. I’ve done a lot of roadwork, and I collaborated with some NGOs to bring development,” Madam Asiedu said.

In addition to infrastructure, Madam Asiedu stressed her work in providing mechanized boreholes for the community, further solidifying her image as a dedicated public servant.

Madam Asiedu also urged the people of Ayensuano to trust in her leadership.

“I will continue to do more for the people of this constituency. I’m committed to serving them and making their lives better,” she assured.

Her victory is also historic as she becomes the first female parliamentary candidate for the NPP in Ayensuano.

This marks a significant milestone for both Madam Asiedu and the party in the constituency.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem he revealed that he was not surprised by his win, attributing it to several factors, including his opponent’s character.

According to Rev. Addo, the incumbent, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, lost her seat due to her behaviour and inability to connect with the people.

According to him, public sentiment on the ground indicated that, her character played a significant role in her defeat.

“People were thanking me for unseating her. From the feedback I received, many said she was proud and didn’t know how to relate to the people,” he added.

Rev. Addo also attributed his win to his own approach to engaging with the electorate.

He stated that his conduct and accessibility made a difference, giving the NDC an edge in the race.

“It was my approach and how I related to the people that helped me win,” he said.

Regarding the unrest that followed the election, Rev. Addo condemned the actions of individuals who ransacked the home of Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

He clarified that those responsible were not NDC members.

“Those who went to the assembly to attack the place were not members of our party. It is unfortunate that some people were involved in this incident. We should not tolerate such behaviour.”

He called on his supporters to be vigilant and maintain peace.

“Even those causing mayhem are not from our constituency. We must be our brother’s keeper and report anyone causing confusion to the police.”

Rev. Addo also expressed his gratitude to the people of Ablekuma West for giving him the opportunity to serve.

“I thank the people for believing in me and giving me this chance to serve them,” he said.

Rev. Kweku Addo won with 31,866 votes, defeating the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, who garnered 26,575 votes.

EC directs suspension of collation for 9 outstanding constituencies https://www.adomonline.com/ec-directs-suspension-of-collation-for-9-outstanding-constituencies/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 13:17:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481978 The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the suspension of processes to resolve nine unresolved parliamentary disputes across the country until further notice.

This decision has sparked opposition from political parties in the Ablekuma North Constituency, one of the constituencies affected by the directive.

The EC’s directive was communicated to representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, December 10, during their visit to the regional office to continue collating disputed election results.

Both parties have rejected the directive, raising concerns over its potential impact on the fairness and transparency of the process.

As of Monday, December 9, the EC, in collaboration with political parties, had successfully collated results from nearly 219 polling stations in Ablekuma North, leaving 61 polling stations yet to be confirmed.

Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, strongly criticized the decision, stating that suspending the process undermines the transparency and legitimacy of the electoral outcomes.

“We cannot accept a directive that prevents further action. That would be very difficult to accept,” he remarked.

In response to the situation, supporters of the NDC gathered at the Accra Regional Office of the EC, blocking roads with an electricity pole in protest.

The demonstration was triggered by the Police preventing them from entering the EC premises, where collation for the highly contested Ablekuma North Constituency continues.

The protesters demanded access and called for the immediate declaration of results in what has become a tense and closely watched electoral race.

According to anonymous sources, the intruders were spotted wearing branded National Democratic Congress (NDC) shirts and chanting, “Our government is now in power,” as they stormed the facility early this morning.

Items stolen during the break-in include 24 air conditioners, laptops, and other essential equipment belonging to the Commission.

The intruders also attempted to seize keys to newly acquired vehicles but failed in their efforts.

The incident has sparked concerns about security at state-owned properties, particularly in the wake of the political transition following the 2024 elections.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the break-in is politically motivated.

The Police, upon being alerted, swiftly arrived at the scene to restore order.

They have since secured the premises and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The Forestry Commission has not yet issued a public statement on the matter, but updates are anticipated as the investigation progresses.

Following the polls on Saturday, December 7, Joy News reported that KT Hammond, who has represented the constituency since 2001, received 13,229 votes.

His challenger, Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 14,229 votes, emerging as the new MP-elect for the constituency.

However, the outcome has not been well received by the veteran politician, who has since Saturday called for a recount of the ballot papers.

In an interview with Adom TV on Monday, December 9, KT Hammond firmly responded, “No, I will not concede,” when asked if he was prepared to accept the results.

The MP’s refusal to concede stems from what he claims are discrepancies on the pink sheets issued by the Electoral Commission (EC) officials at the end of the polls.

He also alleged that, some ballot boxes were snatched and others were also missing.

Meanwhile, many senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have lost their seats to the NDC include Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitization, from the Ablekuma West constituency, and Henry Quartey, the Interior Minister, from Ayawaso Central in the Greater Accra Region.

Additionally, Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hawa Koomson, Tourism Minister and MP for Sekondi Andrew Egyapa Mercer, and Deputy Works and Housing Minister Prince Hamid Armah have all lost their seats to NDC candidates.

The NPP Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha disclosed this at a press conference on Monday, December 9, 2024.

He said the residence in the constituency has been vandalised by suspected thugs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Despite not disclosing the extent of damage and when exactly the incident happened, Mustapha said the information got to them on Monday afternoon.

He lamented that, the act was part of pockets of violence suffered by its supporters across the country following their setback in the just-ended election.

Mustapha indicated Yendi and its Tolon MP, Habib Iddrisu’s residence was also under attack.

“That you have won elections so the country should flame up? We didn’t go attacking people when we won the 20116 and 2020 election. So why should the NDC subject as to this horror?” he questioned.

He called on the Police to swiftly arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book, stressing the attacks were shameful and cruel.

Ablekuma West Municipal NCCE organizes parliamentary dialogue https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-west-municipal-ncce-organizes-parliamentary-dialogue/ Sun, 08 Dec 2024 19:52:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481683 The Ablekuma West Municipal office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized a parliamentary dialogue on Friday, 29th November 2024, to provide candidates in the Ablekuma West Constituency of the Greater Accra Region an opportunity to share their plans and policies with constituents.

The event also allowed electorates to voice concerns, make suggestions, and ask questions on issues affecting them.

This dialogue, held in collaboration with the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC), aimed to foster a platform for the constituency’s two parliamentary candidates, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to engage constituents.

Despite both candidates being invited, only Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful attended the program.

In her opening remarks, the Ablekuma West Municipal NCCE Director, Ms. Georgina Ohemeng, emphasized the importance of the dialogue, noting that it was designed to help candidates articulate their vision for the constituency and address the concerns of constituents.

She encouraged attendees to be tolerant of divergent views, placing peace and development above all in their discussions.

Members of the IPDC also contributed by promoting political tolerance, warning against the spread of fake news, and urging vigilance to ensure free and fair elections.

Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, a three-term Member of Parliament and NPP parliamentary candidate, expressed gratitude to the NCCE for organizing the dialogue and to the people of Ablekuma West for their unwavering confidence in her leadership.

She recounted her achievements over the past 12 years, highlighting infrastructure projects, social interventions, improvements in security, job creation, and sanitation initiatives.

Addressing the stalled sea defense project affecting Glefe, Shiabu, and neighboring communities, Hon. Owusu-Ekuful explained that delays were caused by fisherfolk’s demands to incorporate a landing beach into the project.

This necessitated a revision of the contract plans, which was beyond her office’s control. She assured constituents that the hurdles had been resolved, and work would soon resume.

Participants raised concerns about sanitation, employment opportunities, and uncompleted projects in the constituency. The MP assured them of her commitment to addressing these issues and completing ongoing projects.

She urged constituents to vote massively for the NPP in both parliamentary and presidential elections to safeguard initiatives like the Free Senior High School policy and other impactful programs introduced by the NPP government.

In closing, Mr. Adam Mahmoud, Chairman of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee and Chief Imam of the Tunga Community, encouraged electorates to fulfill their civic responsibilities peacefully and avoid actions that could jeopardize Ghana’s peace.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, December 7, Mr. Gyamfi claimed the NPP is deploying desperate tactics as they face potential defeat, including spreading false information to mislead voters and discredit the NDC.

“The NPP knows they are losing this election. Out of desperation, they have resorted to lies, propaganda, and inciting their hooligans to cause mayhem,” he alleged.

Mr. Gyamfi urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and not be swayed by what he described as baseless claims intended to manipulate public perception and disrupt the electoral process.

He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible election while encouraging voters to stay focused on exercising their civic duty responsibly.

“We call on all Ghanaians to ignore the lies of the NPP and continue voting peacefully. The NDC remains committed to safeguarding the integrity of this election,” he stated.

2024 polls: Missing names, verification issues hit some polling centres https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-missing-names-verification-issues-hit-some-polling-centres/ Sat, 07 Dec 2024 10:12:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480474 The ongoing 2024 elections have witnessed reports of missing names and verification challenges at various polling stations nationwide.

The development has caused frustration among voters and delays in the voting process.

At some centres, registered voters found their names missing from the electoral roll.

Confusion erupted at the Old Library polling station in the Ledzokuku Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, over alleged missing names.

Similar issues were reported in the Ablekuma Central Constituency, raising concerns about the accuracy of the voter register, which was expected to undergo thorough verification ahead of the elections.

In other areas, such as Tamale Central and Wulensi, biometric verification devices encouraged some challenges, halting the voting process temporarily.

In the same Constituency, Not a single vote has been cast at the Faith Academy polling station at the Ledzokuku Constituency due to malfunctioning Biometric Verification Devices.

The delays have sparked tensions among affected voters with some fearing disenfranchisement.

However, polling officials have urged calm and reassured voters that efforts are underway to address these issues promptly.

A total of 617 voters are expected to vote at the station.

It took the intervention of an Election Office to normalise the situation which threatened to delay voting.

Ablekuma West voters angrily reject alleged food from Ursula Owusu [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-west-voters-angrily-reject-alleged-food-from-ursula-owusu-video/ Sat, 07 Dec 2024 09:44:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2480459 Chaos erupted at the Assemblies of God Church polling station in the Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday morning.

The confusion followed the arrival of a truck of breakfast allegedly from the incumbent Member of Parliament(MP) Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

The angry constituents chased an Ash pickup which was fully loaded with food packed in boxes out of the voting centre amidst hooting.

Reports suggest the occupants explained the food was for polling and electoral officials.

“We just brought food breakfast for our polling agents and EC officials, but the NDC members are asking us to take the vehicle out. The food is from Ursula Owusu. This shouldn’t create a problem because it’s not for voters,” Doris Boakye, a member of the NPP in Ablekuma West told Citi News.

A video shared by ChannelOne TV on X captured the vehicle being driven away from the polling station.

Madam Owusu who is facing fierce competition in the 2024 election from the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate, Kweku Addo is however yet to comment on the alleged food distribution.

Police are on the grounds to restore order.

Judge orders retrial in JB Danquah murder case after split Jury verdict https://www.adomonline.com/judge-orders-retrial-in-jb-danquah-murder-case-after-split-jury-verdict/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 18:49:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2479305 The murder trial of Daniel Asiedu, accused of killing former Abuakwa North MP JB Danquah, is set for a retrial following a hung jury verdict.

The jury of seven delivered a split decision of 4:3 not guilty, prompting the presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, to discharge the jury in accordance with Section 285(4) of the Criminal and Other Offenses (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30). The court determined the verdict was inconclusive and insufficient for further action.

Despite the jury’s decision, Daniel Asiedu remains in custody as ordered by the judge.

The case dates back to 2016 when Asiedu was arrested in connection with the murder of the late MP. Prosecutors allege that Asiedu robbed and fatally stabbed JB Danquah at his residence.

After undergoing psychiatric evaluation and being declared fit for trial, Asiedu’s plea was taken in February 2021, and the trial began the same year.

The retrial is expected to address lingering questions surrounding the case and seek a conclusive resolution to the high-profile murder trial.

FACTS OF THE CASE

According to the facts of the case, the accused visited the house of the late MP, and accessed the room of the MP by using a ladder. At the time the incident occurred, the security officer on night duty was said to be asleep.

The accused is said to have struggled with the deceased, over powered the MP, stabbed him in the chest and neck and made away with three phones.

Police investigations uncovered that the accused had a knife wound on his palm and washed off the blood at a house adjacent to the house of the late MP.

Daniel Asiedu is said to have handed over the phones to a family friend of his girlfriend to charge them and unlock them who was the third prosecution’s witness.

Prosecution case

The state called eight witnesses to prove its case of Robbery and Murder against the accused person. The first witness was Samuel Berko Sarkodie, driver of the late MP. He testified to the activities of the MP on the day of the incident.

He explained under oath that he drove his boss to his office at Dzorwulu, later to Tema and Stanbic heights for meetings and dropped him off at home at about 11 pm on February 8.

He returned to his home only to be called at about 1 pm and informed of a robbery incident at the home of the MP.

The second witness, Stephen Apraku a security personnel stationed at the house of the deceased MP at night, testified that indeed the driver dropped off the MP and left the premises.

He however admitted to dozing off at a point during his night duty. He explained waking up to the repositioning of the ladder in the house.

Being suspicious of the ladder moving from its normal position and being placed at the window leading to the room of the late MP, he raised an alarm which led to the arrival of the Police.

He testified that together with the police, they found the police officer lying dead in a pool of blood.

The third and fourth witnesses who are brothers, testified to their relationship with the accused and his involvement in the crime. The two were family friends of the girlfriend of the accused.

The third witness, Ken Koranchie testified to the accused handing over two phones to him the dawn after the incident.

According to him, the accused asked him to charge the phones and later unlock the iPhones for him.

One of the iPhones however was unlocked unknowingly to the accused person according to the third prosecution witness.

Ken Koranchie further testified that he learned about the death of the MP, the morning after the phones were handed to him.

To his surprise, he saw pictures of the late MP on the unlocked phone. Alarmed by the situation, he sought to return the phone to the police.

The third prosecution witness testified that he established contact with Ursula Owusu after finding her number on the unlocked iPhone.

Ursula Owusu is said to have reported the incident and the third prosecution witness to the police which eventually resulted in the arrest of the accused person.

Another witness whose house was adjacent to that of the house of the MP testified to the accused person washing of the blood off his hands at her home.

The other three witnesses were the pathologist, DNA analyst and the investigator.

The pathologist identified the cause of death to be Exsanguination which was a result of stab wounds to the chest and neck.

The DNA analyst testified that traces of the accused DNA were found at the crime scene and on the home of the fifth accused where he washed off the blood from his hands.

The investigator in his testimony also revealed that the accused admitted to committing the offence.

The prosecution argued that it has by its evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused was guilty of robbery and murder.

Defence of Accused

Lawyers of the accused persons however described the prosecution case as a made-up story to unlawfully jail his client. According to his lawyers, the state failed to present material evidence that linked the crime to the accused.

Rev. Yaw Darkwa representing Daniel Asiedu explained that no forensic test was carried on the supposed murder weapon, a shirt alleged to belong to the accused with blood on it.

He also raised questions as to why the jury in the case was not allowed to access the phones to see if indeed it belonged to the deceased.

He also raised issues about the work of the pathologist whose report was written two years after the test was taken. Yaw Darkwa argued that the post-mortem report could not be relied on as the pathologist may have forgotten parts of the report due to the lapse in time.

This according to him is because the pathologist had explained that the laptop for which he took notes during the pathology test was stolen.

Rev Yaw Darkwa further raised concerns about the work of the DNA expert claiming the work was done by a third-party company for which he claimed credit.

For him, the DNA expert was not competent enough to speak on the DNA results since the report did not emanate from him.

The lawyer of the accused thus urged the jury to acquit his client as in his opinion, the accused was falsely prosecuted.

The jury after deliberations returned with a 4:3 not guilty verdict for both the robbery charge and murder charge.

Ursula Owusu hails CitizenApp for cutting out ‘goro boys’ and boosting public service efficiency https://www.adomonline.com/ursula-owusu-hails-citizenapp-for-cutting-out-goro-boys-and-boosting-public-service-efficiency/ Thu, 28 Nov 2024 16:44:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2476962 The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has commended the newly launched CitizenApp for eliminating the reliance on intermediaries, commonly referred to as ‘goro boys.’

She noted that the app, along with other e-government initiatives, empowers citizens to directly access public services from their smartphones, enhancing efficiency and transparency in service delivery.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Digital Economy Policy on November 28 in Accra, the Minister spotlighted the Ghana.gov platform, which is a unified portal designed to streamline access to government services.

“This platform has been expanded to include the CitizenApp, recently launched by the Vice President. The app enables users to access public services conveniently from their mobile devices at home or in the office. No more ‘goro boys’ [middlemen],” she said.

Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that the new policy builds on existing digital initiatives and sets the framework for future advancements.

“Ghana’s digital agenda aims to ensure equal access to broadband internet across the country. We have implemented policies to provide public and private digital services to all communication users, irrespective of their service providers.

“While many digital initiatives preceded the launch of this policy, it will consolidate the progress made and chart a strategic path for the future,” she added.

The Minister described the new policy as both timely and vital for Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation efforts.

“This digital economy policy is not only timely but essential for addressing the realities of the digital transformation we are pursuing.”

Pentecost pastor appeals for support to complete flood-prevention gutter project https://www.adomonline.com/pentecost-pastor-appeals-for-support-to-complete-flood-prevention-gutter-project/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 07:24:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2476178 The Church of Pentecost, Mpoasei District, is making significant strides in tackling the long-standing flooding issues in the Dansoman-Yellow House to Glefe area by spearheading the construction of a vital drainage system.

Severe floods have plagued the community during the rainy season, causing damage to homes and businesses and disrupting lives. Determined to address this challenge, the church took the initiative to construct a drainage system, estimated to cost GHS 667,000, to alleviate the suffering of residents.

In an interview with Puretvonline.com, District Pastor John Gilbert Ayamba clarified that the project is entirely financed and managed by the church, with no financial support from external parties.

“The flooding issue has been a major concern for our community, and as a church, we felt the need to take action to safeguard lives and property,” Pastor Ayamba explained.

He added that while the church informed the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, about the project, her involvement was limited to facilitating the release of equipment from the municipal assembly. Beyond that, the funding and execution remain the sole responsibility of the church.

“This is a community-driven project by the church. All funds raised so far are from our members’ contributions. No government funds have been provided,” he emphasized.

The project, which is currently underway, still requires additional financial support to be completed. Pastor Ayamba appealed to NGOs, philanthropists, and well-meaning individuals to assist in ensuring the drainage system is completed and fully operational to prevent future flooding.

“It is our hope that this initiative inspires others to contribute towards the wellbeing of our community. We can achieve so much more together,” he urged.

NLC launches legal action against Ghana Highway Authority workers’ strike https://www.adomonline.com/nlc-launches-legal-action-against-ghana-highway-authority-workers-strike/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 09:19:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471381 The National Labour Commission (NLC) has announced that it has taken legal action in response to the ongoing strike by workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).

The strike began on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, with GHA workers protesting the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).

In a statement issued the same day, the NLC highlighted that the strike did not comply with the procedures required under the Labour Act, 2023 (Act 651).

The Commission directed the workers to suspend the strike and adhere to the established legal process.

Speaking to Citi FM, NLC Executive Secretary Ofosu Asamoah stated that the Commission had proceeded with legal action due to the workers’ noncompliance with its previous directive to follow proper channels.

“They did not follow the due process provided by law, which requires at least seven days’ notice to the Labour Commission, two notices to the Commission, and to their employers. Additionally, in this case, any strike declaration should come from the national union, not a divisional one.

“Before the strike, the Ministry had already petitioned the Commission, and the GHA workers had been summoned. We have initiated legal action, though if they decide to comply, we would pause court proceedings. Given that they have acknowledged skipping the due process, we hope they respect our directive, as it is in their best interest and that of all Ghanaians,” he explained.

COP29: Ursula Owusu-Ekuful calls for collective action against climate change’s worsening impact https://www.adomonline.com/cop29-ursula-owusu-ekuful-calls-for-collective-action-against-climate-changes-worsening-impact/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 09:03:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471377 Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, highlighted the urgent need for proactive climate action both in Ghana and globally.

She was speaking to journalists at the ongoing COP29 Climate Conference, where she acknowledged the far-reaching effects of climate change.

She emphasized the importance of consistent engagement on the issue, rather than addressing it only in response to disasters.

“Climate change is something that affects us all in so many ways,” she stated. “We haven’t been active in speaking about it regularly. When we continue to speak about it, we can prevent more severe impacts.”

Owusu-Ekuful outlined Ghana’s efforts to address climate challenges, including collaboration across sectors and adapting strategies to changing climate patterns.

She cited how shifts in rainfall have affected farmers, explaining that the Ghana Meteorological Agency had advised the Ministry of Agriculture to inform farmers to adjust planting schedules according to the altered rainfall patterns.

Unfortunately, this guidance came too late for many farmers, leading to crop disruptions this season.

Coastal erosion and rising sea levels are also taking a toll on Ghana’s coastal communities, underscoring the need for education and preparation among residents. “People in coastal areas must be educated on what to do in such cases,” she said, highlighting the need for a coordinated strategy.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful called on all government agencies to unite in developing a comprehensive approach to climate resilience.

She stressed the role of lifestyle changes and enforcement of environmental laws, suggesting these as steps to mitigate climate-related impacts on everyday life.

Echoing her concerns, she warned that unchecked climate change could exacerbate inflation globally.

“Worsening climate impacts will put inflation on steroids unless every country can take bolder climate action,” she stated, drawing parallels with the pandemic’s economic toll.

She emphasized climate finance as a form of “global inflation insurance” and called on the international community to prioritize the escalating costs of climate inaction.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful is calling for immediate, united action to avert a climate crisis that will only grow more costly with time.

Ghana needs $15 billion to tackle climate crisis https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-needs-15-billion-to-tackle-climate-crisis/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 11:16:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471007 The Ghanaian government is urgently seeking $15 billion in international aid to combat the worsening climate crisis, as revealed by Dr. Antwi Boasiako Amoah, Director of Climate Vulnerability and Adaptation at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The funds are intended to support critical climate adaptation initiatives, particularly in the northern regions, where increasingly unpredictable weather has caused devastating crop losses and disrupted the livelihoods of many farmers.

Speaking with Adom News’ Akwasi Nsiah, who is reporting from the ongoing UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan, Dr. Boasiako Amoah highlighted the severe impact climate change is having on Ghana.

“Climate change is altering the patterns of rainfall, causing higher temperatures, and increasing the frequency of droughts. It’s a crisis that is already here and impacting our communities,” he said.

He stressed that Ghana has until 2030 to secure this essential funding, without which the country risks even greater environmental and economic hardship.

“Agriculture, which is the backbone of our economy, is being hit hard. Farmers, especially in the north, are struggling to survive as prolonged droughts destroy their crops and force them to abandon their land,” he explained.

Minister of Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also spoke on the need for a unified approach in combating climate change, underscoring the importance of collaboration across government agencies and public engagement.

“Tackling climate change is not a task for a single ministry or agency. It requires all hands on deck. We need every Ghanaian to understand the urgency of the situation and work together,” she urged.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful further highlighted the role of education in building climate resilience. “Raising awareness about climate change across all sectors and age groups is crucial. People need to know how their actions affect the environment and what they can do to help,” she added.

Ghana’s urgent call for international assistance reflects the growing recognition of climate change as a crisis that threatens not only the environment but also the nation’s economic stability and food security.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful honoured as exemplary leader at Cybersecurity Awards Night https://www.adomonline.com/ursula-owusu-ekuful-honoured-as-exemplary-leader-at-cybersecurity-awards-night-2/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 11:00:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2469049 The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has been honoured at this year’s Cybersecurity Awards Night for her exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to cybersecurity and digital transformation in the country.

The award which was presented to her by President Akufo-Addo was held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel.

The award recognised her leadership in championing robust cybersecurity frameworks, raising awareness about digital safety, and driving initiatives that enhance online security for individuals and businesses across the country.

Under her guidance, Ghana has made significant strides in cybersecurity, including the development of the Cybersecurity Act, which provides a comprehensive framework for protecting digital infrastructure.

Her efforts have been pivotal in positioning Ghana as a regional leader in cybersecurity, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to safe, secure, and resilient digital spaces.

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful reaffirmed her dedication to advancing digital security and fostering a culture of safety in Ghana’s online landscape adding that, President Akufo-Addo’s support, interest, and commitment have been instrumental in the accomplishments Ghana celebrate today.

“Under your leadership, Ghana’s cybersecurity development has undergone tremendous improvement. In 2017, the National Cybersecurity Secretariat was established which later transitioned into the National Cyber Security Centre in 2018, and eventually evolved into the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), in 2021, following the enactment of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038) as the regulatory body on cybersecurity matters.

Three cities to receive 5G services starting today; check out the list https://www.adomonline.com/three-cities-to-receive-5g-services-starting-today-check-out-the-list/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 16:55:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467354

Ghana has officially launched high-speed 5G internet service, starting with coverage in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, as the government aims to expand connectivity across the nation.

At the event held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, President Nana Akufo-Addo, along with the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, inaugurated the service, marking a milestone in the country’s digital advancement.

“This is truly a revolutionary leap forward that promises to redefine connectivity, productivity, and overall quality of life,” remarked Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. “Residents in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi will begin experiencing the benefits almost immediately once the network operators activate it.”

The Minister emphasized that the initial rollout is the start of a phased plan to cover additional urban areas by the end of 2024 and eventually reach rural areas by 2026.

Ghana’s 5G infrastructure is being developed through a consortium led by Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a shared infrastructure company promoted by the government in partnership with several private firms, including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

Highlighting the importance of reliable service, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful urged citizens to hold their service providers accountable if 5G coverage is unavailable by December in areas that are part of the initial rollout.

“If you live in the initial 5G catchment areas and still cannot access 5G by December, kindly call out your network operator because they have to make it available to you,” she urged.

As Ghana joins the ranks of countries offering 5G, the government has structured the rollout with a focus on digital inclusivity and affordability.

The NGIC has been granted a 10-year exclusivity period to establish nationwide 5G infrastructure, which will be accessible to all telecom operators to ensure equitable service delivery.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful commended President Akufo-Addo for his dedication to Ghana’s digital economy, noting his instrumental role in fast-tracking the 5G launch.

“Thank you, sir, for being a visionary… and for believing in Ghanaian ingenuity, talent, and innovation. You have set us on the path to building a future where technology and connectivity are pillars of our nation’s development.”

The government also announced plans to provide affordable data packages and is collaborating with telecom providers to make high-speed internet accessible to businesses, students, and low-income households.

With the launch of 5G, Ghana aims to drive growth across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education, as well as foster smart cities and IoT advancements.

Gov’t to launch 5G services today https://www.adomonline.com/govt-to-launch-5g-services-today/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 08:52:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467002
The government will today, November 1, 2024, launch the high-speed internet service 5G at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to announce the launch, which will elevate internet connectivity and speed to a new level.

5G service has been described as the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, offering higher internet speeds, faster upload and download times, more consistent connections, and improved capacity.

5G networks operate on the same radio frequencies as their predecessors—3G, 4G, and 4G LTE networks—which have served most mobile phones worldwide. However, improvements in speed, latency, and bandwidth give 5G networks shorter download and upload times, stronger connectivity, and better reliability, making them the natural successor to 4G technology. It is said to be ten times faster than the 4G Plus service.

Government on 5G Rollout

In an earlier engagement with the media, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, revealed that the government has partnered with seven industry players to establish shared infrastructure for 5G services, aiming to deliver affordable and high-speed mobile broadband services across Ghana.

During a Meet-the-Press engagement earlier this year, she stated that the 5G service is expected to bring numerous benefits to Ghanaians, including faster data speeds, lower latency, and increased connectivity. This will enable citizens to access digital services, including healthcare, education, and financial services, more efficiently and effectively.

5G Service Provision and Consortium of Companies

The government has awarded the 5G license to The Next Gen InfraCo NGIC, a new shared infrastructure company co-promoted by the government and seven other firms. This new shared infrastructure, according to the government, is aimed at delivering affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana.

The partners include Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

8th Parliament risks being the worst in Ghana’s history – Ursula warns https://www.adomonline.com/8th-parliament-risks-being-the-worst-in-ghanas-history-ursula-warns/ Tue, 22 Oct 2024 19:53:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463227 Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has called on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to ensure order in the House.

She warned that, the 8th Parliament could go down as the worst in Ghana’s history if the current chaos continues.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful expressed her concerns about the rising disorder in Parliament and stressed that it is the Speaker’s duty to restore calm and prevent further disruptions.

She pointed to the chaotic scenes during Bagbin’s election as Speaker as an example, highlighting the need for decisive leadership to protect the integrity of Parliament.

Her remarks come in the midst of growing tensions, with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucuses claiming majority status, intensifying the conflict.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful made these comments during a media interview at the official launch of an industry forum and the inauguration of an independent assessor by the Cyber Security Authority.

She called on all parties to work together to maintain peace and stability in Parliament for the benefit of national development.

“I am concerned about the image that this eighth parliament is creating for itself as the most chaotic Parliament that we’ve ever seen. And I think it’s wrong and it’s bad and it doesn’t do the image of Parliament any good. I don’t think there is anything to be gained in rowdyism or fights on the floor of Parliament.”

“I will urge the Speaker to sit with the leadership… Let’s deal with this challenge in a cool-headed manner and at the end of the day Parliament as an institution, our democracy will be the winner.

“If we don’t take care, we will have done a great disservice, not just to ourselves but to succeeding generations and will go down in history as the worst Parliament, if not one of the worst led by a speaker because a speaker is supposed to bring order to the house.

“He doesn’t want all this to degenerate under his watch. The manner in which he was sworn in, or he rose through this position was acrimonious enough, we don’t want him to end his tenure with another acrimonious situation. And I think it’s incumbent on him to let cool heads prevail,” she stated.

Gov’t to launch US$5m fund and first phase of UG digital hub on December 1 https://www.adomonline.com/govt-to-launch-us5m-fund-and-first-phase-of-ug-digital-hub-on-december-1/ Thu, 10 Oct 2024 22:21:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2459255 The government will on December 1, 2024, commission the phase one of the country’s first youth digital hub and launch a US$5 million Endowment Fund to promote digital innovation and entrepreneurship.

Although the hub would be established for the University of Ghana, it would be available for the training of other students and youth across the country, as the government works to construct three more in other universities.

The other beneficiaries are the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the University of Development Studies (UDS).

When completed, the hub would have lecture theatres, digital libraries and labs, a 2,200-capacity auditorium, as well as hostel facilities, which would serve both Ghanaian students from afar and students from other parts of Africa.

The project, known as the University of Ghana digital youth hub is under the Ghana COVID-19 Alleviation and Revitalization of Enterprises Support (Ghana CARES) ‘Obaatanpa’ programme, and expected to be ready in 2025.

It is aimed at building a vibrant ecosystem that would provide the requisite knowledge and technical support to technology and digital entrepreneurs to create jobs and propel sustainable tech-based businesses in the country.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency after a tour of the project on Tuesday, October 8, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, said, the hub was to position the youth to take advantage of the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution.

He noted that through the initiative, the country would grow the tech entrepreneurship sector, and attract investment from other countries, including Google and Microsoft.

“We want to train a million youth in digital skills, and it’s not a task that cannot be done. It is possible, and we are doing it, where the hub provides us good places to do a lot of training of the youths,” Dr Bawumia said.

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, Finance Minister, pledged timely release of funds to ensure the completion of the project within schedule, saying, “as far as payment is concerned, we’re not delaying.”

Dr Amin Adam said the hub would be modelled like the Silicon Valley to attract high-tech firms into the country to make the tech and digital sector thrive, and create more jobs, particularly for the youth.

“We’re also establishing a US$5m endowment fund to support the management of this hub. So, everything that’s required to make it a complete digital village in the provision of skills to the youth of Ghana will be done,” he said.

He stated that the hub, together with the three others to be constructed at KNUST, UCC, and UDS, would be an infrastructural catalyst in training Ghanaian youth with digital skills in support of the one-million jobs agenda.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization, would help students and other tech-savvy youth actualize their ideas to champion growth in Ghana’s digital economy.

She noted with through collaboration, cooperation, and coordination, the hub would unlock enormous potentials, adding that, “if the young people are provided with the digital knowledge today, they’ll provide global manpower in the future.”

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana, pledged the school’s resolve to turn the hub into a centre of excellence to provide cutting-edge solutions to the country’s digitalization challenges.

At the presentation ceremony in Accra yesterday, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, congratulated GMeT’s management on its proactive approach and commitment to the agency’s mandate under GDAP.

She highlighted GMeT’s progress on its e-Climate Project, saying it was one of the few organisations that was achieving significant milestones under the initiative.

She emphasised the critical role climate and weather services played in Ghana’s socio-economic development, stressing that timely and accurate weather information was essential for safeguarding lives, agriculture, infrastructure and businesses.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful said in today’s rapidly evolving world, digitalisation was crucial to the effectiveness of climate and weather services as it enhanced data collection and real-time analysis, resulting in more precise forecasts and climate models.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising weather services for a resilient, climate-smart future, highlighting the urgency of reliable weather data due to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

With the new equipment, she said GMeT was now better equipped to monitor real-time weather conditions, improve early warning systems and provide more accurate forecast.

“This will enhance disaster preparedness, support agriculture, aviation and maritime activities, and ultimately help protect lives, as well as livelihoods across the country,” the minister said.

Quality and reliability

The Director-General of the GMeT, Eric Asuman, said the presentation of the equipment marked another milestone in the journey towards improving the quality and reliability of the weather and climate services.

He acknowledged that the equipment was a significant milestone in improving the quality and reliability of weather and climate services.

He said many of GMeT’s stations had been facing challenges in transmitting data due to a lack of computers and servers, and that the new equipment would help address those issues.

Mr Asuman also highlighted the agency’s achievements, including national and international partnerships with the Danish Meteorological Institute, the Italian Meteorological Service, and the UK Centre.

He said GMeT was automating operations through the implementation of an Integrated Management Information System (IMIS), which would streamline processes for generating and disseminating weather forecasts.

He further pointed out that GMeT’s internally generated funds (IGF) had grown from GH¢ 3 million in 2022 to GH¢89 million in 2024.

“With all these achievements, I am certain that with continued support from the government, partners and the staff, GMeT will soon become a world-class meteorological institution,” Mr Asuman said.
