The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alexander Kwaku Asafo Agyei, has announced plans to establish a Scholarship Award Committee to enhance transparency and fairness in the selection process.
According to him, the committee will be responsible for reviewing and vetting scholarship applications and making recommendations to the Registrar for final approval.
Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr. Asafo Agyei did not specify when the committee will commence its work but indicated it will be chaired by a respected educationist and professor of law who has previously served at the Jubilee House.
“So I will not directly handle scholarships. The committee will vet and recommend applicants after a thorough process before any scholarship is awarded. You will go before the committee before your application gets to me,” he explained.
He further stated that the committee’s recommendations will be based on academic records, interview performance, background checks, and the applicant’s passion for their chosen programme.
On decentralizing the application process at the district level, Mr. Asafo Agyei revealed plans to include a written examination as part of the selection criteria.
“We will also have a committee that includes the MCE or DCE, MP, a chief or representative, and two members from the Secretariat to conduct interviews.
“We want to incorporate a written test using the halls at the district assemblies. It will be a transparent process where applicants will know their scores, based on which selections will be made,” he added.
