Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi says he is ready to return to the legal team of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, should he be invited to handle an appeal against his 20-year jail sentence in the Samreboi galamsey case.
The lawyer, who previously represented Chairman Wontumi during the trial, said he remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and believes the case requires further legal scrutiny.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty, the former Asante Akyem North MP said he is awaiting instructions from Chairman Wontumi or persons connected to him.
“If anybody connected to Chairman Wontumi or himself reinvites me for an appeal, I will do it. I am waiting for the instruction,” he said.
He maintained that his decision to step aside during the trial was not an abandonment of his client but a move he believed was necessary under the circumstances.
“I did not abandon my role as a lawyer in the case,” he stressed.
Lawyer Appiah-Kubi further questioned whether the evidence presented was sufficient to justify the conviction, warning about the consequences of setting what he described as a worrying precedent.
“I can put my life on the line that with this evidence and someone having been convicted for 20 years, what is the guarantee that if someone comes to say I have committed murder and there is no corroborative evidence, I won’t be jailed?” he questioned.
He added that he intends to publish a book on Ghana’s justice system, using Chairman Wontumi’s case, and will make it available for all Ghanaians to read and understand the issues.
