A suspected armed robber, who was part of a three-man gang, was shot dead when the gang tried to hold up a prisons officer in his house at Oyarifa Rehoboth Estates at dawn yesterday.

The officer, in self-defence, fired his pump action gun, which killed one of the robbers who had gone to the house to rob the household.

The two other suspected robbers managed to escape after their accomplice had been gunned down.

Although the identity of the deceased is yet to be established, the police have indicated that he was about 30 years old.

Masked and armed

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Abokobi/Ayi Mensah District Police Commander, Supt Edward Tetteh, said the prisons officer (name withheld) had indicated that the three suspected robbers, all masked and armed with a pistol, an industrial cutter and a hammer, had broken into his house.

Supt Tetteh said when the robbers entered the house, they tried to hold the prisons officer and his family hostage at gun point.

Unfortunately for them, the officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP), managed to reach out for his pump action gun while his house was under attack and fired, in the process killing one of them.

Police patrol

Supt Tetteh said about 1:20 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2019, the Abokobi/Ayi Mensah District Night Patrol Team received a distress call that some suspected armed robbers had attacked a house at Oyarifa Rehoboth Estates.

The police patrol team, he said, went to the scene and found the body of a man on the compound of the house, with gunshot wounds to his head.

It was also found that the suspected robbers who had escaped had made away with mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.

The police also retrieved an industrial cutter and a hammer from the scene and subsequently deposited the body of the deceased at the Police Hospital morgue.
