Tensions flared at the Akyem-Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region when irate residents stormed and ransacked the facility following the death of a suspect in custody.
The youth accused a police officer, identified only as Kumador, of allegedly assaulting the suspect after his arrest during a swoop in which substances suspected to be Indian hemp were found on him.
Enraged by the incident, the residents massed up at the station, demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
Reports indicate that officers on duty fled the premises as the mob advanced.
A combined team of police and National Security personnel was later dispatched from Koforidua to restore calm.
