The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the immediate demolition of a fire-ravaged one-storey building near the Jackson Park traffic lights in Koforidua over concerns about its structural stability and the danger it poses to the public.

The directive was issued by Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey after she inspected the damaged structure with security service commanders and the Municipal Chief Executives of New Juaben North and South.

The building was severely damaged by a fire that broke out at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The entire upper floor collapsed during the incident, while sections of the ground floor also gave way.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at 11:02 p.m., after which a 10-member firefighting team was dispatched to the scene.

The team arrived at 11:15 p.m. and managed to bring the fire under control at 1:23 a.m. on Sunday. The blaze was completely extinguished at 3:04 a.m.

The firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining properties, but several businesses and residential units within the affected building were destroyed.

The premises housed Kwaku Showboy Boutique and Mama Pee Collection, as well as residential units.

Among the items destroyed were personal care products, electrical cables, jewellery, paints, drinks, air conditioners, mobile phones and accessories, clothing and footwear.

REGSEC said the demolition is aimed at eliminating the immediate danger posed by the weakened structure and protecting residents, traders and pedestrians who use the busy Jackson Park area.
