The editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako, has called for an end to the sub-culture where party supporters besiege the premises of state investigative bodies to show solidarity with political figures invited by such agencies for questioning.
Mr Baako’s comment comes a day after supporters of businessman Ibrahim Mahama massed up at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra to show solidarity with the brother of former President John Mahama who was being investigated in connection with some alleged financial malfeasance.
According to the veteran journalist, such a practice should be condemned.
Speaking on Newsfile on Multi TV on Saturday 22 April, Mr Baako said: “There is a certain sub-culture which has gone on for a long time. I’m told a top executive of the NDC yesterday organised a crowd to go to the premises of EOCO to agitate. This is not the first time. When Mr Kwadwo Mpiani and Dr Wereko Brobbey were invited to BNI in the early days of the Mills administration, there was a crowd that massed up.
“When [ex-President] Rawlings was called to the BNI, there was a crowd that massed up. When Kennedy Agyapong was sent to the CID headquarters, a crowd massed up. Even that one turned into some semi-riot. I think that it is a sub-culture we should condemn.”
Mr Baako appealed to political party executives to desist from mobilising persons for such purposes. According to him, massing up to show solidarity will not change what a state agency like EOCO or a court will do to the person under investigation. “No matter what you do, it’s not even in the interest of the person that you think you are helping to do that,” he added.
