A student of the Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Bono East Region has alleged that she sustained a blood clot in her eye after being assaulted by police during a demonstration over what students describe as poor conditions at the school.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the student claimed the protest was peaceful and that demonstrators posed no threat before police allegedly attacked them.
“It was a peaceful and harmless demonstration. We were not armed; we were not even holding a cane,” she said.
According to her, police officers accompanied the students throughout the protest until an encounter involving the school’s Dean and the police allegedly changed the situation.
She claimed that after the Dean approached a police vehicle and engaged the officers in a discussion, the police suddenly began assaulting the demonstrators.
“The Dean went to sit inside the police car and we don’t know what transpired. After he got down, the police started fighting against us. We were brutally assaulted,” she alleged.
The student said she was among those allegedly attacked by the officers, resulting in injuries including a blood clot in her eye.
“Personally, I was beaten and kicked by the police, and my head landed in a big gutter. I have a blood clot in my eye,” she alleged.
She maintained that the students neither provoked the police nor engaged in any acts of violence.
“We did nothing. We didn’t insult anyone or pelt stones. We were not violent at any point, and we didn’t cause any chaos. They just arrested and harassed some of us,” she said.
The student also criticised the school’s management, accusing the authorities of failing to address the incident or support affected students.
“The school authorities have said nothing about it,” she stated.
She further alleged that after the demonstration, some officers later went to her hostel and took her to the Divisional Police Command.
“I was at the hostel when they sent people to bring me to the Divisional Command. We sat there for more than three hours. The principal and the dean went into the commander’s office but just drove off without saying anything, so we had to return to the school,” she recounted.
The students staged the demonstration on Monday to protest what they described as poor living and learning conditions at the institution. Police are yet to publicly respond to the allegations of assault.
