The Central North Regional Police Command has confirmed that Nana Professor Okogyeaman Ameyaw Dankwa Okokroko II, Chief of Assin Wurakese, has been found following earlier reports suggesting his abduction.
Eyewitnesses said the chief was taken from his residence at Assin Nkukuasa around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, by four unidentified men wearing military fatigues, face masks, and armed with weapons. The incident triggered widespread fear among residents of the community.
Police responded swiftly after receiving the report, deploying teams to the area, activating intelligence units, and alerting checkpoints across the Central and Eastern Regions.
Their efforts led to the interception of a Mitsubishi pickup with registration number GN-833-24 in Asamankese at about 9:05 a.m., where the chief was found along with four other occupants. They were all detained on the orders of the Central North Regional Commander, DCOP Abraham Acquaye.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, DCOP Acquaye explained that the men involved were operatives from the National Security Secretariat. He clarified that the chief had been picked up to assist with an ongoing national security investigation and was later handed over to a formal national security team at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The commander urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control and being managed in the national interest.
Meanwhile, some residents have expressed concerns about the approach of the operatives, describing it as heavy-handed and likely to cause unnecessary fear and panic in the community.
