South African coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that Ghana made an informal approach to him regarding the Black Stars job ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though discussions never progressed beyond initial contact.

The highly regarded former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly manager was among the names linked to the vacant position following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

Speaking in an interview with Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports World, Mosimane confirmed that the Ghana Football Association had reached out, but stressed that the engagement lacked substance.

“There was a bit of talk. When I asked the office, they said there were talks, but sometimes teams want three names and then decide who they want out of the three,” Mosimane said.

The 61-year-old made it clear that a short-term assignment was never appealing, distancing himself from the possibility of taking charge under such conditions.

“For a call from a Ghana official is not really a serious thing, and also the other thing is, do I really want to go for two months, one game, three games, four games.

“Maybe I don’t want three games, four games right and for whatever reason.”

Mosimane suggested that such opportunities depend on individual perspective, pointing to the eventual appointment of Carlos Queiroz, who has taken charge of the team ahead of the tournament.

“And maybe Carlos [Queiroz] says, ‘ Why not, let me go have fun, let me go to the World Cup again, it depends on how you see it,” he added.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday and has already begun preparations for the World Cup, where Ghana will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

With Ghana seeking to improve on their group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz has been handed the responsibility of guiding the four-time African champions to a deeper run on football’s biggest stage.
