Parliament has deferred debate on the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Tuesday, July 28, to allow Members of Parliament more time to examine the budget statement presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
The debate, which was expected to commence on Friday following the presentation of the review on Thursday, has been rescheduled after the House agreed to postpone proceedings until next week.
The postponement is expected to give lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority sides adequate time to scrutinise the government’s fiscal performance during the first half of the year and review the policy measures proposed for the remainder of 2026.
Presenting the Mid-Year Budget Review, Dr Forson highlighted improvements in key macroeconomic indicators, including declining inflation, exchange rate stability, stronger foreign exchange reserves and continued fiscal consolidation.
The Finance Minister also outlined several policy interventions aimed at sustaining economic recovery, including accelerated infrastructure development under the Big Push Programme, increased investment in agriculture and education, expansion of social protection programmes and measures to strengthen the productive sectors of the economy.
Among the key initiatives announced were the construction of 10 new senior high schools to support the elimination of the double-track system, the operationalisation of the Women’s Development Bank before the end of the year, the procurement of high-capacity buses to improve urban transportation, and a proposed US$500 million financing facility to boost Ghana’s oil palm industry.
When debate begins on Tuesday, lawmakers are expected to assess the government’s economic performance, examine the proposed policy measures and determine whether they are sufficient to consolidate macroeconomic stability, promote growth and improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.
