The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has praised the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for his guidance, support and commitment to the Fund as it marks one year of full operations.
Reflecting on the Fund’s first year, Ms Darko-Opoku said it was impossible to discuss the journey without acknowledging the important role played by the Health Minister.
According to her, while the public often sees the outcomes of the Fund’s work, several conversations, long meetings, difficult decisions and behind-the-scenes engagements contribute to those achievements.
She said Mr Akandoh had consistently demonstrated a willingness to engage, listen, challenge ideas and provide direction, particularly during moments when there were no easy answers.
“We have had those moments where there was no easy answer and no perfect choice, but you have always been willing to engage, listen, challenge the thinking, provide direction and stay with the process until we found the best way forward,” she stated.
Ms Darko-Opoku expressed appreciation to Mr Akandoh for his guidance, candour and patience, particularly his willingness to work through difficult decisions rather than simply asking whether a particular decision was the best option.
“Thank you for the guidance, the candour, the patience and the many moments when, instead of simply asking, ‘Is this the best decision?’, you sit with me and work through it until we are both confident that it is the best decision, not just for today, but a decision we can both look back on and know that we got right,” she said.
As the Ghana Medical Trust Fund marks one year of full operations, Ms Darko-Opoku said the milestone should not be seen as a reason to relax, but rather the beginning of more work and greater responsibilities.
“One year down… and knowing us, we are definitely not about to start relaxing now. In fact, we are just about starting,” she said.
She noted that the Fund still had significant work ahead, including difficult decisions and further engagements to advance its mandate.
Ms Darko-Opoku also prayed for God’s continued blessings, strength, wisdom and grace for the Health Minister as he leads the health sector.
“May God continue to bless your kind heart, strengthen you and give you the wisdom and grace to keep leading with the commitment you bring to the health sector. You are truly appreciated,” she added.
