Counsel for embattled socialite Abu Trica, Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has addressed the controversy surrounding his client’s decision to grant a television interview while his extradition case remains before the courts.
Speaking on the matter, Barker-Vormawor acknowledged that, as a general rule, no responsible lawyer would advise a client to publicly discuss a case that is still pending before the courts.
He explained that judicial decisions are determined by the evidence and legal arguments presented in court, not by comments made through the media, making it prudent for litigants to refrain from discussing ongoing proceedings publicly.
Netizens raised concerns that some statements he made in the interview allegedly alluding to some funds he received could negatively affect his case.
However, his lawyer noted that the interview had already taken place and could not be undone.
According to him, those who criticised Abu Trica for granting the interview had every right to do so, just as those who cautioned him against it had also made their positions clear.
Barker-Vormawor stressed that there was little value in dwelling on the issue any longer, as he urged for focus to be redirected to the substantive extradition proceedings before the court.
