Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says the next Black Stars head coach, if appointed from abroad, must spend more time in Ghana as the country prepares to find a successor to Carlos Queiroz.

Ghana are without a substantive head coach after Queiroz departed following a disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a new coach before the final round of qualifiers against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Adams said the government had communicated its expectations to the GFA as discussions over the appointment of a new coach continue.

“In our engagement [with the GFA], we indicated that our coach should also be interested in spending time in Ghana,” Adams said.

“You can’t have a national team coach who visits the country only when the team is coming to play a competition. Then you are not a national team coach.

“The coach must spend more time here and maybe go to Europe to also scout there from time to time,” he added.

Meanwhile, an interim technical team is expected to take charge of the Black Stars for their double-header against Somalia next month at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Reports suggest that Kim Lars Björkegren, Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko will help lead the team in the two matches.

Ghana are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two qualifying matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.

The Black Stars are seeking to revive their campaign and secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON after missing the previous edition in Morocco.
