The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), ahead of a government-agreed deadline of October 16, 2026.

In a press release dated October 15, the department said 49,725 teachers received their payments on Thursday, alongside their October salaries, while another 6,278 teachers were paid in September.

The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.

The development follows an agreement reached between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2, setting October 16 as the deadline for settling the outstanding payments.

However, thousands of promoted teachers are still awaiting payment, as their cases remain unprocessed or require further documentation.

According to the CAGD, the Ghana Education Service reported that 80,000 teachers had been promoted. Of these, the GES processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633 cases.

The CAGD said it verified and paid 56,003 cases, while 630 remain pending due to issues identified during its verification process. The department is awaiting the GES to resolve those issues before the affected teachers can be paid.

A further 23,367 promoted teachers are yet to be processed, with the relevant documents still to be submitted by the GES.

The department said it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met the required payroll conditions, adding that it remained committed to settling other eligible cases once corrections were made or complete and accurate documents were received and verified.

The CAGD thanked the GES, teacher unions, and participating ministries and agencies for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.
