Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana’s next phase of economic transformation must focus on creating decent and productive jobs, particularly for the country’s growing youth population.

He said job creation must be placed at the centre of efforts to build a more productive economy and ensure that the benefits of economic growth are widely shared.

Dr Ato Forson made the remarks following a New Economy engagement with academics, researchers and students of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Nyankpala Campus.

Describing the engagement as successful and inspiring, the Minister said the discussions highlighted the need for an economy that responds to the aspirations and needs of young Ghanaians.

According to him, the New Economy agenda is intended to move the country beyond economic stabilisation and place productivity, job creation and shared prosperity at the heart of national development.

“The NEW ECONOMY must create jobs at scale: decent, productive jobs that give young people a real stake in Ghana’s future,” he said.

Dr Ato Forson said the interaction with the UDS community reinforced the importance of creating an environment that supports entrepreneurship, expands economic opportunities and provides young people with pathways into meaningful employment.

He noted that the New Economy agenda goes beyond economic policy and is also about shaping a future in which young people can actively participate in and benefit from Ghana’s economic growth.

He said creating sustainable employment opportunities would therefore remain a key component of the country’s economic transformation agenda.
