Some grassroots members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency have appealed to the party’s national leadership to reverse the suspension of Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare, warning that the decision could affect party unity and morale.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Branch Women’s Organiser, Paulina Korankye, said many members were shocked by the suspension and believe Mr Ofosu Agyare deserves another opportunity.
She appealed to the party leadership to reconsider the decision and allow him to continue leading the constituency.
“We pleaded with the national leadership that whatever the problem is, they should temper justice with mercy. What the members are asking is that our chairman should be reinstated so that he can continue to lead the party,” she said.
According to her, many grassroots members credit Mr Ofosu Agyare with strengthening the party’s structures and contributing significantly to the NDC’s victory in both the parliamentary and presidential elections in the constituency in 2024.
She alleged that the suspended chairman personally supported campaign activities, provided logistics and worked closely with branch executives to mobilise members.
“He is the engine of the party. He is the heart of the party. He helped us win the election, and we believe he is important to maintaining that victory,” she stated.
Ms Korankye expressed concern that the suspension has affected the enthusiasm of some young party supporters, with some threatening to withdraw from party activities.
“Most of the youth are very demoralised. They are saying that if you call them for party activities, they will not come because they believe it was Mr Stephen Ofosu Agyare who motivated and supported them,” she said.
She further suggested that the disagreement between Mr Ofosu Agyare and the Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, appeared to be a personal issue that should not be allowed to affect the entire constituency.
She therefore called on the party’s national executives to intervene and reconcile the two leaders in the interest of unity.
The appeal follows the NDC Functional Executive Committee’s decision to suspend Mr Ofosu Agyare for five months after a petition was filed by the constituency MP.
The party explained that the suspension was based on recommendations from the Central Regional Council of Elders, and the matter has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.
During the suspension period, Mr Ofosu Agyare is barred from performing his duties as constituency chairman until the disciplinary process is concluded.
