The Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), in collaboration with the Kenyasi No. 1 Traditional Council, has cut sod for the construction of a GH¢19.95 million College of Education at Kenyasi No. 1 in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

The project, expected to be completed within two years, is aimed at expanding access to teacher education and improving educational development in the district and the wider Ahafo Region.

The facility will comprise a five-storey hostel, a two-storey administration block, a three-storey classroom block and other supporting infrastructure, with the capacity to accommodate about 580 students.

Speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Kenyasi No. 1, Nana Osei Kofi Abiri, the Akwamuhene, Nana Yaw Boadu, said the decision to invest part of the community’s share of NADeF funds into the project reflects the Traditional Council’s commitment to education as a catalyst for development.

He explained that the College of Education would not only accelerate development in the community but also provide easier access to teacher training for senior high school graduates within the Asutifi North District and across the Ahafo Region.

Nana Yaw Boadu appealed to the contractor to execute quality work and complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.

The General Manager of Newmont Ahafo South Mine, Alex Kofi Annin, commended the Traditional Council for prioritising education and investing the community’s development funds in a project that would have a lasting impact on future generations.

He said Newmont was pleased with the prudent use of NADeF resources under the leadership of Nana Osei Kofi Abiri to improve the welfare of the people.

The Asutifi North Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Naomi Asantewaa, also welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major boost to education in the district.

She said the establishment of the College of Education would help improve the quality of teaching by providing basic schools in the district with more teacher trainees during their teaching practice.

Mrs Asantewaa commended the Kenyasi No. 1 Traditional Council for its foresight and commitment to promoting education through strategic investment in teacher training infrastructure.
