Motorists and pedestrians in Kumasi have expressed growing frustration over traffic lights that have been non-functional for several years at the Poku Transport Junction, creating hazardous conditions along one of the city’s busiest roads.
A visit by Adom News to the Ofokrom municipality revealed that the main road linking Anloga Junction to Tech has become particularly dangerous during peak hours. Drivers say the absence of working traffic signals has led to confusion, frequent near-misses, and a heightened risk of accidents.
Residents added that pedestrians, including school children and market traders, are often forced to navigate the busy intersection without guidance from traffic lights. Some motorists described the situation as chaotic, with vehicles frequently colliding or blocking each other while trying to cross, causing congestion and delays.
Responding to the complaints, Oforikrom Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Anwel Sadat Ahmed urged caution from both drivers and pedestrians while repair works are ongoing. He confirmed that restoration of the traffic lights is underway and assured that the signals would soon be fully operational.
The MCE also appealed for patience from residents, emphasizing that authorities remain committed to addressing the longstanding issue and improving road safety at the junction.
