Defending Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Vision FC as they opened their title defence at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema New Town on Saturday.
The hosts made a bright start and took the lead after just eight minutes when Naziru Alhassan Nyeney found the back of the net to hand Vision FC an early advantage.
Medeama improved significantly after the break and restored parity two minutes into the second half through Kingsley Braye, who finished off a well-worked move to bring the visitors level.
The contest unfolded as a tale of two halves, with Vision FC dominating the opening period before Medeama responded strongly after the interval. Both teams pushed for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared.
The result denied Medeama a repeat of last season’s 2-1 comeback victory over Vision FC at the same venue, although the defending champions will be satisfied with taking a point from their first league match of the campaign.
Medeama now turn their attention to an outstanding league fixture against Dreams FC on Wednesday, September 23, at the Tuba Astro Turf.
Vision FC move up to four points from their opening two matches and sit sixth in the standings, while Medeama are 13th with one point from their first game, having played fewer matches due to their CAF Champions League commitments.
Heart of Lions held again as Swedru All Blacks earn point
Heart of Lions remain without a win this season after being held to a goalless draw by Swedru All Blacks in Kpando on Saturday.
The hosts entered the match seeking a first victory after drawing with Aduana FC and losing to Asante Kotoko in their opening two games, but they were once again unable to find a way past their opponents.
Despite enjoying home advantage, Lions struggled to create clear-cut opportunities as a disciplined All Blacks side stood firm to secure a valuable away point.
The draw leaves Heart of Lions with just two points from their opening three matches and in 12th place on the league table. Their inability to score in two home matches this season will be an area of concern as they look to kick-start their campaign.
For Swedru All Blacks, the result continues an encouraging start to life back in the top flight. The newly promoted side move to four points from three matches and occupy fifth position after following up their opening-day defeat with a win and a draw.
While Lions continue their search for a first victory of the season, All Blacks will be pleased with another positive result on the road.
