Ghanaian clubs Medeama SC and Nations FC will each receive $100,000 despite being eliminated in the first preliminary round of the 2026-27 CAF inter-club competitions.
Medeama’s exit from the CAF Champions League and Nations FC’s elimination from the Confederation Cup means Ghana will have no representative in the group stage of either competition this season.
Medeama, the reigning Ghana Premier League champions, were knocked out by Congolese giants TP Mazembe after suffering a 4-1 aggregate defeat.
The Ghanaian side lost the first leg 1-0 at the TNA Park before Mazembe secured a 3-1 victory in the return leg in Lubumbashi to progress to the second preliminary round.
Mazembe will now face Zambia’s Red Arrows for a place in the group stage.
Nations FC, meanwhile, made their debut in continental competition but were unable to progress beyond the opening round of the Confederation Cup.
The Ghana FA Cup holders lost 1-0 away to Mali’s FC Diarra in the first leg before drawing 1-1 in the return fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium.
FC Diarra’s 2-1 aggregate victory sends them through to the second preliminary round, where they will meet ASKO Kara.
The financial reward provides some consolation for both Ghanaian clubs following their early exits.
Medeama will now turn their attention to defending their Ghana Premier League title, while Nations FC will focus on their domestic campaign in the Division One League.
The $100,000 payment is also a significant development in CAF’s efforts to provide greater financial support to clubs participating in its competitions, particularly those eliminated at the earliest stage.
For Ghana, however, the departures of Medeama and Nations FC represent another disappointing continental campaign, with the country now without a club representative in the group stage of either of Africa’s two major men’s club competitions.
