Former Second Lady of Ghana, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, has recounted one of the most shocking things she was told following the death of her husband, former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.
According to her, at a time when she was grieving, a man came to her house claiming that her husband was not actually dead and could be brought back to life.
“One person came and said, my husband is not dead. We should take him to the mortuary and he will resurrect my husband,” she recounted.
The bizarre suggestion left those around her stunned, with her son eventually intervening to have the man removed from the house.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur said the incident was one of several unusual experiences she encountered after her husband’s passing, revealing that bereaved families can become vulnerable to people who seek to take advantage of their grief.
She noted that some people may approach grieving families with questionable suggestions or claims, knowing that the emotional state of the bereaved can make them more susceptible.
“When you are bereaved, you are vulnerable. You are so vulnerable that if you don’t take care, people will push you to do things,” she said.
For this reason, she said it is importance to have trusted people around a bereaved person to provide guidance and help them make sound decisions during such a difficult period.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur also observed that some people visit bereaved families out of genuine concern, while others may simply come to satisfy their curiosity or gather information to share with others.
Reflecting on the wider cultural attitude towards death, she said society often avoids conversations about mortality, which contributes to the mystery and vulnerability surrounding bereavement.
