Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako says the appointment of Charlotte Osei as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) is President John Mahama’s worse mistake.
According to him, the former President appointed Charlotte Osei not because she was competent for the job but to aid the National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the 2016 elections.
“Charlotte Osei’s appointment as the EC chair was the worse mistake John Mahama did as President. I know he appointed her just so she can help them win the 2016 elections but thank God that never happened because of me” he said on Accra based Neat FM.
The current EC Chairperson has come under attack following a petition sent to the President Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo to impeach her.
Madam Charlotte Osei has however responded to the allegations leveled against her by employees of the Commission.
Mrs Osei in her response, pointed out among others that the allegations were unfounded, saying; “There is clearly, no established case of fraud or abuse of office made against the Chairperson. The public purse, should be, and must be protected even at the EC.”
“It is clear from the manner in which these allegations have been laid – in the court of public opinion – based on no facts and only malicious intent of persons protecting corrupt and unscrupulous acts,” she added.
The employees accused Mrs Osei of cronyism among others.
She has threatened to sue the employees for making these claims.
But reacting to the issue, Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly known claims the swift response from the NDC considering the allegations shows clearly that the previous government strategically made Mrs. Charlotte Osei the EC boss FOR political gains.
He was happy to plot to rig the 2016 elections by the NDC backfired and are languishing in opposition.
Chairman Wontumi is therefore calling on President Akufo-Addo is reassign Mrs. Osei to restore the integrity of the electoral body.
“Right from the onset I knew there was nothing good in that appointment by Mahama and now this issue is very serious and so it’s important that she humbly resigns and investigation is conducted into her appointment” he added.
