President John Dramani Mahama says the government has commenced a review of the road network within the Airport enclave and the central business district to address anticipated traffic congestion arising from rapid development in the area.
The review is being undertaken by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in collaboration with the Department of Urban Roads.
President Mahama explained that the growing number of residential, commercial, hospitality and other developments in the area would place additional pressure on the existing road infrastructure.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project on Tuesday, September 15, he said government was already taking steps to ensure the road network keeps pace with the area’s development.
“I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district. Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow,” he said.
The President said the review would explore a number of measures to improve traffic flow, including widening existing roads and introducing one-way systems on some routes.
“And so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one-ways, and improve the road network,” he added.
His comments come against the backdrop of increasing investment and infrastructure development around the Airport area.
The $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project is expected to feature premium apartments, a 600-room hotel, a 2,500-capacity conference facility, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall, as well as other commercial and leisure amenities.
President Mahama said the planned road interventions are intended to ensure that public infrastructure within the Airport enclave develops alongside the growing scale of private and public sector investments.
He stressed the need for proactive planning to prevent emerging developments from worsening congestion and putting excessive pressure on existing road infrastructure.
