Lawyer Adu Ameyaw, counsel for Asante Akim North Member of Parliament (MP), Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has strongly denied reports that his client is standing trial in the United Kingdom.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, lawyer Ameyaw described the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.
“Our client has not brought us anything to show that he is facing any issue in the UK. When such reports come out, his constituents become worried unnecessarily,” he said.
He further appealed to the media to respect the privacy of the MP and his family, adding, “The family is also asking that some privacy be given to the MP. What is being circulated is not true.”
The denial was also contained in a letter dated September 8, 2025, from Frimpong’s legal representatives, which stressed that no civil or criminal case is pending against him in Ghana or in any foreign jurisdiction.
The controversy began after sections of the media claimed that the independent MP was on trial abroad, a situation that they suggested could affect his parliamentary seat. The reports also sparked widespread speculation on social media.
However, Lawyer Ameyaw insisted, “There are no pending legal proceedings, whether civil or criminal, against our client in any court of competent jurisdiction, either in Ghana or outside.”
Despite the denial, some opposing views remain.
Lawyer Martin Kpebu recently claimed that Frimpong was facing trial abroad, while media personality Paul Adom-Otchere also alleged that the MP’s legal troubles could trigger a by-election in Asante Akim North.
The 39-year-old entrepreneur and politician previously dismissed similar rumours of his arrest in the UK three weeks ago through a social media video, recorded from his bed, in which he said the reports were untrue.
Frimpong, who contested the 2024 parliamentary elections as an independent candidate, defeated incumbent NPP MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, making him one of Ghana’s few successful independent parliamentarians.
