La Pleasure Beach is expected to reopen within three weeks, following the demolition of structures at the facility, its management has said.
The demolition was carried out by the National Security on Friday, October 2. It followed a request from the Labadi Beach Hotel to clear its beachfront of structures it described as encroachments. Several structures and businesses at the beach were destroyed.
The Communications Director of La Pleasure Beach, Abdul Rahman Ashittey, said the timeline depends on how fast the debris is cleared and the necessary facilities are put back.
Speaking to Channel One TV, he said management expects the debris to be cleared this week, after which some facilities will be installed to make way for the reopening.
“They have promised this week they will come and clean up the entire beach so that the beach will continue from there. They will just mount our toll booths and then the toilet facility over here. In less than three weeks,” he said.
Mr Ashittey said management has also spoken to vendors about not putting up permanent structures on the beach once activities resume.
Stressing how important the beach was to the La community, he said its activities helped set up a development fund, and asked how the community would continue to raise money for development if the beach were permanently shut.
Management has met the National Security Coordinator, the Regional Minister, the Local Government Minister, the Chief of La and the management of the Labadi Beach Hotel to discuss the way forward, he added.
