The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has called on musician Mzbel to provide details that will aid investigations into claims that her relative died after allegedly being denied a hospital bed.
In a statement issued by management, the hospital said it had taken note of a video circulating on social media in which Mzbel suggested that her relative lost their life because there was no bed available at the facility.
Korle Bu said it treats all allegations concerning patient care with the utmost seriousness and has since made efforts to contact Mzbel and her family to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
According to the hospital, it is seeking to determine whether the deceased was referred to Korle Bu and denied admission upon arrival or whether the patient had not yet been transferred to the hospital and had instead been advised to wait until a bed became available.
Management said it had not been able to engage the family directly and has therefore appealed to Mzbel to provide the necessary information to support a thorough investigation.
The hospital also reiterated that it remains bound by the government’s directive that no public health facility should refuse emergency cases.
It explained that following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, the hospital’s board instructed management to ensure strict compliance with the policy, a position that has also been reinforced by the Minister for Health.
Korle Bu further disclosed that it has acquired additional beds and other facilities to reduce incidents of bed shortages and has repeatedly reminded all clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to attend to emergency cases.
Management stressed that any deliberate refusal to provide emergency care would constitute a serious breach of hospital policy and would be investigated thoroughly.
The hospital also urged patients and their relatives to use its official complaints channels, including its telephone lines, website complaints portal and QR code system, to report concerns to enable prompt investigations and corrective action.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, Korle Bu assured the public that it remains committed to establishing the facts surrounding the incident in a fair, transparent and professional manner.
