A July 2026 poll by Global InfoAnalytics has projected that Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson would hold a significant lead over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if the two politicians face off in a potential 2028 presidential election contest.
The poll indicates that Dr. Ato Forson, should he become the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), would secure 57.5% of voter support, while Dr. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would receive 35.3%.
Other possible contenders recorded much lower figures in the survey. Kennedy Agyapong polled 4.3%, while 1.8% of respondents selected “someone else.” Nana Kwame Bediako recorded 0.6%, with Alan Kyeremanten polling 0.5%.
The poll also examined how the two leading contenders perform across regions, particularly based on the voting patterns from the 2024 general elections.
According to the findings, Dr. Ato Forson maintains a strong advantage in the 13 regions won by the NDC in 2024 (Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Greater Accra, Northern, Oti, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western and Western North).
In those regions, the poll places Dr. Ato Forson ahead of Dr. Bawumia by 63.1% to 30.6%, suggesting strong support in areas where the NDC secured victories in the last election.
However, the contest appears much closer in the three regions won by the NPP in 2024 (Ashanti, Eastern and North East).
In those areas, Dr. Bawumia records a narrow lead with 46.5%, compared to Dr. Ato Forson’s 43.6%, indicating a near-dead heat in the NPP’s traditional strongholds.
The findings come as Ghana’s major political parties begin shaping their strategies ahead of the 2028 presidential election, with both the NDC and NPP expected to select candidates who will lead their campaigns for the next electoral contest.
