Residents of Kokomlemle are calling on the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly to immediately clear a local dumping site that has reached full capacity.

They warn that the mounting refuse poses serious health risks to the community.

According to residents, heaps of uncollected waste have remained at the site for more than three weeks, creating an unbearable stench and attracting flies.

They fear the situation could lead to a rise in mosquito breeding and increase the risk of diseases such as cholera if immediate action is not taken.

Residents claim an ongoing dispute over the control of the facility between the Assembly Member for Kokomlemle West, Linda Mireku Ansong, and a local NDC party coordinator is responsible for the situation.

Some frustrated residents, speaking to Adom News, urged those involved in the dispute to set aside their differences and prioritise the health and safety of the community.

Assembly Member Linda Mireku Ansong, however, offered a different explanation when Adom News contacted her.

“The person who used to manage the facility has been transferred to Tema and the new person has been finding it difficult to handle the place, so I got some youth in the community to help,” she said.

She added that “The MCE asked the ward coordinator to come and manage the place, but I opposed it because I am the one who works here. I am the one people come running to when anything happens here, so why is the MCE choosing the ward coordinator to come and manage the place? Since my unit committee members and I opposed the MCE’s decision, even drivers refuse to come pick the waste when we call them.”

She alleged that the situation was part of a deliberate attempt to undermine her work, claiming that certain individuals were seeking to sabotage her efforts because of her intention to contest for the position of Women’s Constituency Organiser within her party.

The Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly is yet to respond to the residents’ concerns.
