The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to overhaul outdoor advertising in the metropolis, with plans to replace traditional static billboards with digital advertising boards from 2027.
The move forms part of the Assembly’s efforts to bring greater order to the city’s advertising landscape and improve the appearance of major roads and public spaces.
Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang, disclosed the plans during an engagement with 28 registered advertising companies in the metropolis on Monday, September 7.
He expressed concern over the growing number of billboards of varying sizes that have been installed without proper coordination along major routes.
According to the Mayor, the unregulated placement of advertising structures not only detracts from the city’s visual appeal but could also create obstructions for motorists and pedestrians.
“For a city to thrive, there must be order,” he said.
As part of the new policy, the KMA plans to reduce the overall number of billboards in the metropolis and introduce uniform standards governing their size, design and location.
The Assembly will also determine the number of advertising structures allowed along specific road corridors, while setting distinct requirements for major entry points and other strategic locations.
The new standards will apply to key areas including the Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabout.
Separate advertising specifications will also be introduced for the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business District.
The Mayor further announced that the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch would remain off-limits to billboard installations until the ongoing road dualisation project is completed.
He warned that the Assembly would also embark on a cleanup exercise to remove old, dilapidated and oversized billboards, as well as advertising structures belonging to operators with outstanding payments.
The planned transition to digital advertising is expected to form a major part of KMA’s broader effort to create a more organised and modern outdoor advertising system in Kumasi.
