Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has expressed satisfaction with his side’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their recent training camp as a valuable step in their build-up.
The senior national women’s team have been training in Accra after withdrawing from a planned three-nation tournament in Tanzania, which was initially expected to provide competitive match practice ahead of the continental competition.
During the June international window, the Black Queens played friendly matches against Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies as well as the Greater Accra Elite U-15 boys team, using the games to assess fitness, cohesion, and tactical readiness.
Bjorkegren said the camp delivered useful lessons despite the change in plans.
“We preferred to play against a national team, but we found out we couldn’t do it. We made the best of the situation,” he said.
He added that the local camp also provided an important off-field experience for the squad, many of whom are based abroad.
“Also, we haven’t been in Ghana that much, so I felt it was a great opportunity for the players to be here, especially because the biggest part of the group play abroad. So to be here in Ghana and eat Ghanaian food and play some games against local teams, I think is perfect.”
“I see this camp as very positive in the preparations for the WAFCON,” he added.
The Black Queens have now concluded their Accra training camp but are expected to regroup next month for a pre-tournament phase in Morocco.
Ghana have been drawn in Group D of the tournament alongside Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali.
