Traditional leaders of Awutu Odupong have invoked their deities against the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, after accusing him of branding them landguards.

The rift follows a media interview in which the MCE addressed the chiefs’ boycott of a sod-cutting ceremony for a proposed 24-Hour Economy Market. During the interview, the MCE alleged that the chiefs had sent landguards to harass residents of Jei River, a suburb of Awutu Ofaakor.

He is reported to have said the boycott was staged in protest of his resolve, as chairman of the Municipal Security Council, to maintain order in the area.

The chiefs have rejected the claim. They insist they have always relied on traditional Asafo groups, not landguards, to monitor estate development activities in the area.

On Sunday, the traditional leaders met at the Awutu Ofaakor palace, where they poured libation to petition their ancestors over the matter. The Abusuapanin of Kasoa Ofaakor performed the “Duabo” ritual, an Awutu customary practice for invoking ancestral judgement against perceived wrongdoing.

The development deepens tensions between the assembly and the traditional council ahead of the market project, which remains stalled following the boycott.
