Ashanti Gold 04 head coach Karim Zito has defended Kwasi Sibo’s decision to join Libyan champions Al-Swehly, insisting the Ghana midfielder has every right to prioritise his career and future.
The 28-year-old reportedly completed a $10 million move to the North African club after leaving Spanish side Real Oviedo.
The transfer has sparked debate, particularly following Sibo’s performances for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup in North America, with some questioning his decision to move to Libya at this stage of his career.
“I’m 100% behind Kwasi Sibo. If you don’t fight for yourself now, nobody will fight for you,” he said.
The veteran coach also questioned whether footballers always receive the rewards they are promised, citing what he described as unfulfilled commitments made to Ghana’s players after an Africa Cup of Nations triumph.
“Even when Ghana won the AFCON, they promised to be given houses; it did not come,” Zito said.
“What is the motive of playing football?”
Sibo was a regular figure in Ghana’s World Cup campaign, playing 249 minutes across four matches.
He started the Black Stars’ goalless draw against England and also featured against Panama, Croatia and Colombia.
At Al-Swehly, the midfielder is expected to play an important role as the Libyan champions prepare for their CAF Champions League campaign, with a preliminary-round tie against Zanzibar’s KVZ on the horizon.
It remains unclear whether Sibo will be included in Ghana’s squad for next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
